Say you break your ankle. You could know everything there is to know intellectually about the injury. Even with this vast knowledge, you will still experience physical pain.
Now take this logic and apply it to things like ADHD, autism, clinical depression, and other less visible/divergent disabilities. You cannot think your way out of feeling.
That is to say: you are not a bad, lazy, or selfish person for struggling, even if you know why you are struggling.

you, artist online. somebody has referenced you in conversation irl by your online handle and somebody else knew who you were talking about. somebody has kept up closely with your posts for a period of time like their morning paper. somebody found a music artist because of you, thinks of you when they hear them on the radio. somebody followed you years ago and remembers you randomly even though they can't find you. somebody has screenshotted and saved your posts and sent them in discord servers. somebody has made your drawings their lockscreen, added them to their favorites folder and looked at them when they're going through some shit, has sent them to their best friend and sparked conversation in private chats. your art in particular could be the source of a keen sense of nostalgia for someone. maybe they've even printed out your images using their home printer and taped them to their bedroom wall and they look at it every day and they never even told you. isn't that scary? isn't that awesome? remember this well.
submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known so that you may turn around and see the impact you leave and the light you cast on others.
Hey. If people aren't aware, Microsoft admitted they know who you and where you are at all times and will give your info to the police.
They have a Global Device Identifier (GDID) Tracker that functions as a fingerprint for your PC that can surpass VPNs, proxy servers and countries. Although it can't survive a clean reinstall of Windows (it can survive updates), because Microsoft forces you to go to the internet and log in into a Microsoft account, they will be able to get to you.
Microsoft kept it secret and it was only found out when the FBI tracked a hacker thanks to the information Microsoft gave them.
You should be paying attention to this, and possibly consider moving away from Windows. If a government, especially the US government, doesn't like you for some reason, this could be seriously concerning.
This article specifically notes:
For journalism, activism, or domestic abuse situations, skip Windows and use Linux routed through Tor instead of a commercial VPN. A GDID doesn’t care which VPN you use, only that it’s still the same Windows installation.
GDID is the persistent Windows ID that helped FBI trace a Scattered Spider hacker despite VPNs. Here's how it works and how to limit it.
Other important quotes:
What has researchers uneasy is everything else the case reveals. Costin Raiu, a well-known malware researcher, asked on the Three Buddy Problem podcast how much of this exists on other platforms, and whether it is linked more permanently to hardware. Matthew Hickey, another security researcher, called Windows “surveillance software”.
Two things back that up:
There’s no consent screen. A GDID gets assigned when you sign into a Microsoft Account. Apple’s advertising identifier needs an App Tracking Transparency prompt and a visible reset; Android’s works the same way. GDID has neither, and a Windows reinstall only gets you a new number Microsoft can still get back to the same account.
Then there’s activation. Massgrave, the group behind Microsoft Activation Scripts, notes that Windows setup sends hardware info to Microsoft and gets identifiers back, the same tokens later used for Store access and licensing: “It’s impossible to prevent Windows from getting a GDID without breaking activation and UWP app[s].” Anyone who lost a license after swapping a motherboard has already met a smaller version of this.
Here's the complaint filed to the court, the primary source for the case mentioned in the article. You can find mentions of GDID on page 30 of the document or 34 of the PDF.
You can get and use windows 11 without logging in with a microsoft account, as of five days ago. I am a local user on my computer. Don't ask me how to do it, because my computer repair guy did it when he reinstalled windows, but there are tutorials out there. Refuse to connect to internet until you're set up and can use the computer freely.
Refusing to connect to the internet doesn't help. You have to open a Command Prompt (Shift+F10) and typing start ms-cxh:localonly (and pressing enter) during installation when you get to the sign in/create stupid ms account screen
For comprehensive deets, tomshardware explains
Maintain only a local account on your Windows 11 PC.
Unless there's really really specific reasons to subject yourself to windows, please consider installing linux mint instead.

My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
Shoutout to people in the notes also mentioning people learning the language, I should've mentioned that really, given that I've been stuck reading German picture books myself while learning German.
this post feels exactly like a conversation you would witness in a dream and think was completely normal and then wake up and think “what the fuck?” for a single millisecond and then immediately forget about completely

finding out hank green got caught using ai and trying to hide it is very funny to me somehow. like i always just found him kind of annoying in that patronizing teacher sort of way, but i never really considered it anything more than a me-problem, and i never tried to justify it as some personal failing on his part. i don't think it's a crime to be a little cringey and i would be a hypocrite if i acted like it was. so to find out he was trying to moneymaxx with ai instead of just doing better time/workload management via spacing out deadlines or hiring extra staff or w/e is like... well i didn't need all that but thank you. it feels like if i didn't like eating peas and was like "i don't think peas are objectively bad for people to eat, i just personally don't like the flavor" and then woke up one day to find out scientists discovered peas cause cancer
I never had any opinion on Hank Green, but I think that this is indicative of a capitalistic trend that incentivizes and structurally encourages anti intellectualism.
To support yourself financially as a science communicator, you must produce consistently and frequently, and traditional economic wisdom encourages you to attract as broad an audience as possible, which pushes you toward being a generalist rather than focusing on your area of expertise. As such, even if you enter into the career with entirely pure intentions, the incentive structure naturally favors fast and broad production, which encourages things like AI tool usage and talking on subjects that you do not have the requisite expertise to opine on
This isn’t even touching on the fact that Hank Green is emblematic of the kind of pop science minded person who is culturally very vulnerable to AI due to their instinctive idealization of new technology and their lack of regular engagement with the social sciences
i agree. i hate the blind trust of ai but i am also the first to insist it is a symptom of a deep-seated cultural fixation on "productivity" at all costs, not the sole cause of a great social collapse. if you literally do not have time in your day as a human to do your job— in this case, doing research, but it can apply to whatever else people are trying to duct tape with ai— then that is a sign there is something wrong with whoever is maintaining the systems that are placing those extreme expectations on you.
ai boosters are always talking about "saving time" and "getting more done" with ai, and all i can think is, even putting aside the low quality of the output, what are you spending that saved time on? more scrolling? more typing to a chatbot? are you really taking back time from the capitalist machinery or are you just finding new ways to feed it back in?? the use of ai even for leisure suggests the latter.
human beings at seemingly every level of income are measured in their ability to Get Work Done, to Produce, to Churn. slowing down to smell the roses is scorned as being indicative of poor work ethic. hustling and grinding is the name of the game. and for people without much/any savings or class mobility, then the grind becomes their only choice. of course a society like that would glamorize, if not insist upon the necessity of, nonstop consultation of the bullshit-collage machine! your only worth is in how much work you do, not even whether it's pleasurable or high-quality or enriches anyone's life. in fact, making people unhappy is better for many businesses, because a satisfied and fulfilled person doesn't need to spend more money.
i do think the ai "industry" as we know it is doomed, but i also don't think the public execution of ai ceos and the total dissolution of their companies would solve anything societally in the long term. if it wasn't ai it would be something else, like a miracle drug that physiologically replaces a full night's sleep, or a one-ounce ration bar that contains the entire day's nutrient intake, or an instant shower pod that shaves your bedtime/morning routine down to 1 minute so you can stay at the office longer.
and that's not even touching on the deep sense of shame instilled in people for the perfectly natural inability to be completely self sufficient. no man is an island; we all rely on everybody else for something... yet it is seen as a failing to admit you don't know something, or to ask for help with any plans or processes, or to otherwise cooperate with other humans as members of a social mammal species. using the word machine is private and saves you from the intolerable indignity of saying, "i can't do this by myself." you don't need to have friends or make connections or maintain any relationships to get headpats and fluff from the word machine. where the hell did we go wrong if using that word machine sounds more appealing to so many people than real socializing with real humans???
i don't know what the solutions are here but i do know it's going to take a lot of time and thought and effort from a lot of people to unwind all of this.
Y'all for real please do these. Even if you're certain your posture doesn't suck. One day you will wake up with impinged shoulder pain like I did and let me tell you it fucking HURTS. Do these exercises even just once a week and it will make such a difference. Especially my fellow creatives out there, stop shrimping over your work and go do these right now. RIGHT NOW.
Also, if you’re even a little concerned about getting a hump or having trouble standing fully upright in your old age, this is how you prevent that. If you want to be up and about when you’re old you have to start when you’re younger. And keep in mind there is no bad time to start and it’s never too late. Starting today is way better than never starting at all.
the thing about being bullied for being weird as a kid is that even if you've always embraced being weird your brain is still always looking for the line where it's too much. you can be as proudly and intentionally weird as you want and you can love being weird but your mind is still convinced there's a point where you get too weird and people start treating you like a weird looking bug again. also it feels like you reach that point 500 times a day even if everyone you've spoken to today found you pleasant and likable and even if you're completely alone in your house with nobody looking at you at all.
