Uh... okay? Feels kinda out of left field but maybe some post I commented on years ago is going around.

Anyway, there's very little stopping you from getting an elective hysterectomy if you want one. There are risks, especially in premenopausal women, so it can be hard to find a doctor willing to do it without a good medical reason. But it's not exactly an uncommon procedure.

Uterus transplants into a male body are definitely not happening in your lifetime and probably not in the forseeable future of the human species. For a lot of reasons. This is, like terraforming-Mars level of "theoretically possible, so impractical and pointless that it's functionally impossible."

I'm not sure if you know this, but human bodies aren't Lego sets. We barely do uterus transplants in actual women. It's a rare procedure with a low rate of success. The organ only stays in place long enough to complete a single pregnancy, which is usually done via IVF. (Ovary transplants from a donor are extremely rare, with only a couple of cases ever, and never along with a uterus transplant.) The child is born via C-section and they remove the donated uterus at the same time.

There are massive ethical issues with doing this procedure in women. Mostly over the fact that it's entirely elective. Not having a functional uterus is not life-threatening or disabling. There's a lot of argument that it's unethical to do a procedure this risky for no real medical benefit. Especially in cases involving live donors (which are strongly preferred, because the success rates are a lot lower with a cadaver uterus).

Donating your uterus isn't like a regular hysterectomy. A regular hysterectomy is usually a minor outpatient laparascopic procedure. Retrieval surgery for donation is a 10+ hour open abdominal procedure. They have to take all the vasculature and nerves and stuff with it, and all of it has to be intact, undamaged, and functional. And that's just for the donor. That's not even the transplant surgery itself. It's so much risk, and for what?

And I really cannot emphasize this enough - that's for a female body. It's an organ we actually have. What if we wanted to do this in a male body?

Well, first, we'd have to answer the most important question of what is the fucking point? What would it even mean for a uterus transplant to be successful in a male body? How do you define success? Certainly not a pregnancy. It's literally easier to build a fully-external technological womb than it is to make a man's body support a pregnancy. We're a lot closer to test-tube babies than we are to male pregnancy.

A uterus isn't decorative. It serves a very specific purpose - gestation. In a female body, it's also part of the hormonal system and a necessary structural element of the female pelvis. (There's a reason hysterectomies come with a significantly increased risk of pelvic organ prolapse.) A male body doesn't need the hormonal or structural elements, and it can't support a pregnancy.

So... what's the point? Just to have one? You're gonna risk people's lives just to put a nonfunctional uterus in a male body just to see if you can? That's Mengele shit, and if the global medical establishment ever abandons its ethics to the point where it tolerates that, even in an experimental way, we have much bigger problems.

And that's before you get into the more practical issues. Like, what do you attach it to? Where does its blood supply come from? Where do the nerves come from? Can the brain even cope with getting sensory information from an organ the body doesn't have? Are you attaching it to the neo-vagina made from colon tissue? The one that's full of e.coli and doesn't self-clean? For someone who's gonna be on immunosuppressants for the rest of their life? You don't need an M.D. to know how that's gonna go.

and even the informed consent paperwork lists atrophy as a side effect of testosterone. why would that be a painless experience? if your arm or your lungs started to “atrophy”, to become weaker and smaller, couldn’t they also start to hurt?
