Ryland was hanging the latest - and probably the last - set of pictures he'd got from his old students up in his shoebox office. Today had been the final mail call they'd get on the Vat before they all moved to Baikonur. It felt weird. The end of an era, Steve Hatch had said a few days ago, but that had been at the end of a nine hour emergency meeting and it hadn't been completely clear whether he'd been talking about the Project reaching its final stages or the Beatles breaking up. The band, that was, not the probes, the probes were fine, they'd fixed the pathing issue there was almost no chance of them steering into each other straight after launch and dooming the entire planet. It was a mitigated risk, like the possibility of the Soyuz capsule exploding on launch, or the Hail Mary experiencing mechanical failure while Ilyukhina was still in a coma, or the coma process failing, or the ship being struck by a previously unknown extrasolar body that was moving faster than the computer could react to, or…

He reached up and rubbed at the bridge of his nose, letting his glasses dangle from one ear, and glanced at the picture in his hand. “Good luck saving the world! According to Andy Weir's Eridian biology document, Eridians are better multitaskers than humans will ever be, but the trade off is they're physically incapable of locking in. SO funny to me. Yes this species can build a diorama while simultaneously blitzing through mathematics equations and also partaking in intense gossiping, but they cannot do any of those things for longer than, like, half an hour without going crazy. Species of supercomputers cursed with the TikTok attention span.

Rocky mocks Grace when he says that Rocky is distracting him by starting complex conversations while he's Trying To Do Science. "Human brain have to stop activity just because talking question? Useless! One track mind!"

Then Grace is on hour six of his "trying to recreate skittles" hyperfocus and Rocky is like What The Fuck. Statement.

Yeah human brains can only do a single very consuming task at a time but it can do it for a very long time. The one track in our one track minds spans multiple countries. Persistence predators, babey.

"Grace refuses to add the swears to the vocabulary" WRONG! Rocky refuses to add the swears to the vocabulary. Grace (book!Grace, at least) is in his thirties. It's like a four-year-old baby by the Eridian standards. Rocky is not teaching the baby the swears, it would be so irresponsible!!

Also, it's so funny to think about how this conversation went. I'm not sure what mental image I love more: a) Rocky stopping in the middle of the rant to explain what he is saying so that Grace can add it to the dictionary or b) Rocky interrogating Grace on the Earth insults beforehand so that he can go on his rant uninterrupted. In any case — oh, to be a fly on that wall. I love them.

An underappreciated mother-daughter moment between Julieta and Mirabel

After Pepa informs Julieta of Mirabel being in Bruno's vision, Julieta looks worriedly at her youngest daughter. And Mirabel's response (and a very cute one honestly) is to immediately look away and drink her juice. Mirabel's whole demeanor screams, "Gotta turn away. Don't look at mama, I can't keep a straight face. How did this happen?" But getting serious, Julieta's surprised look to Mirabel also shows that the former think her talk with the latter earlier about Bruno didn't stick. Julieta also might be putting together that it means Mirabel broke into Bruno's room. Maybe Julieta feels like she may have accidentally pushed Mirabel to get more info on Bruno. And Mirabel can't even look in her mother's eyes, feeling small and lonelier because she wasn't given a chance to explain.
