truly so embarrassing to admit that he never even wrote a christmas special… regardless of whether that’s true or not, how is that supposed to come across as anything other than disingenuous????teasing and announcing a special that you now claim you didn’t even work on???? 💀
It’s not really surprising he didn’t though once you know the BBC was stringing it out. Feels surprising to us, but objectively in the Real World how could he have?
Do you have a rough budget? No. Currently seems unlikely they’ll fund it at all.
Do you know if the actors you want will be available? No. Literally don’t know when it could be filmed.
Do you know where it will be filmed? No. Don’t know which companies would even be involved.
Do you have the new Doctor for the regeneration? No. Because you don’t even know if there’s going to be a following series.
You do not know: the Characters and Actors, the Scope, the Locations, the ability to create Sets, Aliens, the future Doctor themselves, and even if it was going to end up the last episode or not.
And worst of all the BBC won’t even actually officially even cancel it but are saying ‘well if we get a partner’, leaving you in limbo, which along with everything else will come with more changes and restrictions you can’t foresee, including your own status as a writer for it anyway (and ones you won’t work with even if they did).
Can you write a fanfic for it, of course you can, but you cannot do an Actual Real World Script without knowing at least your rough guides for those things. Did he have the ideas? Sure. And time-wise this man is famous for bringing those together and being able to knock out scripts in a sleepless weekend - like Midnight. Writing isn’t the issue.
He fought constantly to get the damn thing to manifest and ultimately lost. Like debate whether he should have projected power or told us ‘i don’t know if there will be a next episode, i know it looks like ncuti killed it by me saying that right now but it’s better than holding out hope for a few years that might not happen’ fine, but acting like it’s some big stain on him that he hadn’t written a script that he clearly could not have written in any meaningful sense, is silly.
