âeveryone who has seen les mis ships e/R with a burning passionâ factoid actualy just statistical error. average les mis viewer only casually ships e/R. George Blagden, who sings on youtube & thinks about e/R 10,000 times each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
i love that les mis quote where grantaireâs like âwho has been unhooking the stars without my permissionâ because 1. itâs poetic and pretty and 2. it implies that, were someone to defy all laws of the universe and unhook the stars, they would have to run that idea by this fuckin drunk-off-his-ass rando and make sure he gives them the thumbs-up on it
Ugh all this Starbucks crap. I wish coffee shops were the way they USED to be.Â
You knowâŚfriends gathering to gossip, that one guy whoâs always yelling about liberation from monarchist oppressors, students throwing chairs out windows to build barricades, the French National Guard showing up and slaughtering everybodyâŚ
No but Enjolras realizing he likes Grantaire and trying to do things that show it
Then one day heâll just ask Courf and Combeferre âDo you think he knows I like him?â and theyâll be like ??? and Enjolras will just sigh like âIâve been dropping hints for almost two weeks.â
âEnjolras, you held the door for him twice and let him win an argument once. And you didnât glare when he interrupted you yesterday.â
âYeah I know. Heâs so oblivious.â
Courf almost tells him about all the pick up lines and flirting R has been using for months that Enjolras never understands but heâs too busy trying to conceal his laughter to do so

like another thing I donât understand with the common fanon portrayal of Grantaire and Enjolras relationship is that Grantaire is often disrespectful and outright mean towards Enjolras?? But in the book, the few times Grantaire and Enjolras speak towards each other, Grantaire is very pleading and nice towards Enjolras. Like, almost pathetically so. I donât know if I have missed something giving that my first language is not English and that is the language I mostly read Les mis in, but I can never picture Grantaire even saying a bad thing about Enjolras or the cause if Enjolras is nearby.Â
Enjolras: I have created a revolutionary.
Grantaire: You've fucked up a perfectly good cynic is what you've done. Look at me. I'm having beliefs.
ExR- Secret Agents AU
Secret agent Grantaire with his handler Enjolras, yes? YES.
Grantaire who is a very A+++ agent, but is always super uncomfortable on honeypot missions, because Enjolras always gets snappish in his ear whenever he has to seduce someone for reasons that heâs not sharing with Grantaire.
Grantaire who has Enjolrasâ voice in his ear so often, that he sometimes just instinctively points something interesting out to Enjolras, and then gets disappointed when he remembers that heâs not on a mission, and Enjolras isnât here with him.
Grantaire who is mildly claustrophobic, and tries not to get stuck in tiny spaces, but sometimes the job calls for it, and he crawls through air vents and stuff like that because he has to, and Enjolras will try to calm his nerves by reading out fun facts for Grantaire.Â
Uhhh, maybe for security reasons, Grantaire has never seen Enjolras? And it doesnât really sit well with Grantaire that heâs never seen Enjolras before, and that they could just pass each other on the street and Grantaire would literally just not know. And it becomes sort of a thing heâd do to try to hack into Enjolrasâ file, much to Enjolrasâ annoyance.
And okay, maybe a mission goes badly, and Grantaire has to go away for a few months, and he canât contact Enjolras, and Enjolras gets DDD: about it and tracks him down because heâs just so fucking worried, and he meant to just check to see if Grantaireâs okay and then leave, but then Grantaire does something stupid like almost get in a bar fight even though heâs injured, because heâs antsy when he has nothing to do, and Enjolras just starts lecturing him, and heâs still mid-tirade when Grantaire gives up and kisses him.Â
You know what the modern au Les Amis fics need? More Jean Valjean.
Being a politically aware and a diverse group of young people, not all the Amis have great relationships with their own parents. So, well, letâs just say that for a guy who only has one daughter, Jean Valjean gets one heck of a pile of Fatherâs Day cards every year.
Bahorel challenging Jean to wrestle with him whenever he sees him. Over and over again, and Bahorel always loses but keeps trying and is kind of offended that one time Valjean lets him win on purpose.
Jehan and Jean share a terrible fashion sense, they know it and they are proud of it. They take care of complimenting each otherâs outfits and then snicker together when everyone else is irritated.
Jean Valjean once made the terrible mistake of saying something self-derogatory in presence of the Amis. From there on they made it their official mission to let him know that he is a good person. They joke about it, for example Courfeyrac makes vines in which he films Valjean doing something nice and comments sarcastically âUgh, that Jean Valjean. Here he is baking cookies again. Disgustingâ or âI truly hate that Valjean, look at him here planting vegetables with Prouvaire, heâs such an awful human beingâ.
Valjean once sees Grantaire painting, so he looks over his shoulder and notices that itâs a wonderful portrait. So Jean demands that R paints him a picture of Cosette to put on her wall, you know, what the heck, he should draw ten pictures while heâs at it! Valjean will pay well for each.
Jean Valjean is basically a honorary barricade boy.
Whenever Joly, Bossuet and/or Grantaire are drunk and they donât know how they will get home, they can always call Valjean and he will find them and drive them home safely without judging them. One night when he was driving the three of them Joly threw up on his backseat (Valjean made them clean it up the next day) and more than once Grantaire has been so drunk that Valjean has taken him home with him and let him sleep it off on his couch.Â
Jean Valjean will always listen to them. Even thought itâs an acknowledged fact among the Amis that Monsieur Jean is a middle-aged virgin who has never even dated anyone, they somehow always end up telling him about their crushes and heartaches. Heâs also a great person to come out to. And after years of practicing with Cosette, his hugs are rare but pretty darn amazing.
Cosette sometimes reminds the other Amis that her papa really isnât used to being loved or liked by so many people, and that they should try their best to show Valjean how much he means to all of them. They do. Valjean is overwhelmed but happy.
Just. Jean Valjean.
so @dotsayers and I have this au called the âenjolras the worst PTA parent everâ au and itâs justâŚincredible.Â
basically enjolras gets kicked off his kidâs PTA for starting too many fights with the suburban mums so forms his own renegade group of parents, carers and education-associated-adults called âLa SociĂŠtĂŠ Mère de l'ĂŠcole d'ABCâ (or according to grantaire âthe PTA rejectsâ) feat:Â
jbm the poly parents who got in a fight with the school because they wouldnât list all three as okay to pick up their son are the ones who initially bring up the idea of the rogue PTA
combeferre who teaches year two and disagrees with the curriculum but has had all his suggestions for change flat-out rejected
courfeyrac who teaches reception and has a deep hatred for the smarmy PTA mums so joined mostly out of spite (also partially because the cute librarian goes)
jehan who runs the community library that visits the school every week and joined because they got angry complaints from the PTA mums when they put books addressing lgbt+ themes into the library. they also possibly implied the Apology Brownies that they brought to a real PTA meeting for the parents in response were pot brownies (they werenât, but it caused such a freak out that they got kicked out anyway)
feuilly the exhausted single dad who works like six jobs but also wants to fight for better resources for his kid
bahorel the gym teacher whoâs just always down for #drama
ĂŠponine whoâs always been treated like shit by the other parents because they think sheâs a super young single mum. sheâs not, gavroche is her brother, but thatâs not the fucking point.
marius accidentally came to one of their meetings instead of the âofficialâ PTA and was too embarrassed to quit when he realised and now he and cosette host every meeting
grantaire picks their kid up from school but enjolras is the one who comes to the meetings and does parents evening so everyone thinks enjolras is a single dad and grantaire is the babysitter until they turn up to get the kid together holding hands and theyâre like âno?????? weâre married????â Â

au where javert is the duolingo owl
Consider:
Enjolras who loves Grantaire back but believes so firmly in equal standing
Enjolras who canât have a relationship with that kind of imbalance
Enjolras whoâs not a god, Enjolras whoâs just a man, Enjolras who believes that Grantaire is just as good as him no matter what he says
Enjolras who works and works and works until Grantaire, too, believes theyâre equal
Enjoltaire thatâs an actual healthy relationship, with communication and equal amounts of love on both ends and mutual adorationÂ
Enjoltaire where Grantaire stops worshiping Enjolras and seeing him as a something too good to be human, Enjoltaire where Grantaire knows Enjolras is a flawed human being and still loves him for it
AU where for some I don't know reasons Royalists kidnap Grantaire (he's the easiest to) assuming that he'll spill everything about les amis in like two hours and then Grantaire doesn't spill anything for like two weeks, or something, just get sick over the lack of alcohol, and of course les amis do a Dashing Rescue, and -- that's the most important part of it all --, when they do, and R promises half delirious he didn't say a word, it's Enjolras, completely certain, very calmly, who says "I know." and R is blinking baffled like he wasn't sure he could keep anything in, but Enjolras just smiles, and holds out his hand :)
pondering. People most tolerant of R's bullshit, from top to bottom:
Bossuet (that's what best mates are for), Joly (obviously), Prouvaire (he gets Melancholy an he's a sweetheart), Courfeyrac (he hangs with Bossuet too much NOT to be), Bahorel (he's known enough assholes to see through R's bullshit), Enjolras (fight me on this), Feuilly (and nobody blames him, come on) and Combeferre (HAVE YOU SEEN HOW HE REACTED TO ONE MEETING WTH MARIUS?).

aftermath
When Marius got home, Courfeyrac was waiting outside the door, leaning against the wall beside the door in a languid tangle of overlong limbs.
âOh,â Marius said, surprised.
âI do know where you live,â Courfeyrac pointed out. Marius ducked his head, embarrassed, and nodded.
âYes, of course,â he said. âI just thoughtâ I donât know. Iâ come in, if youâd like.â
He held open the door and Courfeyrac sauntered in and tossed his hat onto Mariusâs bed. Marius watched him in nervous expectation, plainly wanting to ask something he was too timid to actually say. So instead, eventually, Courfeyrac said, âCombeferre has made us all feel that way at one time or another. You mustnât take it personally.â
Marius flushed. âThank you. I will not.â
Courfeyrac frowned. âI hope you do not thinkââÂ
âThink what,â Marius said, too quickly.Â
ââthat that was some kind of test. That I brought you to meet my friends in hopes of seeing you embarrassed. I hope you do not think that of me!â he went on when Marius did not answer. âI cannot imagine the kind of man who would do something like that.â
My grandfather, Marius did not say. He did say, âNo. I do notâ I do not think that was your intent. Though I understandâŚâ
âUnderstand what?âÂ
Marius shrugged. âIf you⌠that is, our viewsâŚâ He gestured vaguely, as if even he was not sure what he meant to say. At last he settled on: âIt seems I am not really of the right persuasion to make one among your friends.âÂ
Courfeyrac looked genuinely startled, then broke into his usual half-teasing grin. âReally, Marius, the most shocking development of the day is to discover how low your estimation of my character really is. You think I cannot countenance having a friend whose opinions differ from mine? If you cannot tolerate my politics, then I understand and will leave you at once. But I make no quarrel with your opinions at all. I did not befriend you to indoctrinate you. I befriended toâ well, to be your friend.â
Marius looked away and said nothingâ could not speak. Courfeyrac laughed and clapped him on the back, tugged him close so their shoulders bumped together (or would have done if Courfeyracâs shoulder were not significantly higher than Mariusâs).Â
âI will call on you tomorrow,â he said. âIâve been promising to dine with Bossuet for a week now, and you will join us.â
He scooped his hat up off the bed, tipped it at Marius, and was gone. Marius sunk down on the bed with an unvoluntary sigh that seemed to him to be of relief. Not, he realized, relief that Courfeyrac was goneâ but that he had come.Â
" Dark the Dawn When Day is Nigh", Legle and Grantaire? (all these prompts are so easy to imagine as Grantaire fic, except the ones that are screamingly Prouvaire-- I love this list!)
Iiiiiâm gonna go with highway man AU. Laigle resorts to some light highway robbery to try to save the family from ruin (again), but has the terrible bad luck to hold up Grantaire. Sure, his dadâs carriage is nice, but his pockets have more receipts for debts owed than coins.
Thereâs only one things for it, namely holding Grantaire for ransom to get some actual money out of this debacle. Grantaire is all in as soon as he hears thereâs a scheme to get money out of his father, and heâs full of helpful capture and ransom tips.
(Jokes on Laigle though, heâs never getting rid of Grantaire now. He shouldnât have cooked for Grantaire or laughed at even one of his bad jokes; rookie mistake, Eagle Man. Grantaire is going to steal your bed and flirt with your crushes and eat all your pasta - this is the future you brought on yourself.)
I love this, this is a wonderful concept and I am giggling imagining the increasingly urgent â Please collect your childâ letter to Grantaireâs family :D âŚI realize this probably happens in a different, more The Highwayman-ish era, but now all I can imagine is it being canon era and ending Pirates-of-Penzance-ily with them taking up their rightful place in society asâŚslacker students! âŚ.and nothing about their relationship changes at all XD
Bossuet is sentenced to having to finish his classes and actually take the bar exam. Alas!
(Grantaire keeps âjokingâ about how Laigle should really offer to pay his dad money to *keep* him; this culminates in Grantaire launching a letter writing campaign to âsendâ Grantaire to study with Laigle as his new private tutor. You know, for the classes heâs totally attending. Laigle learns about this plan when he receives the first check in the mail.)
