Personal thoughts (feel free to not read this lol):

Harakiri is that practice of (usually) a disgraced warrior ending their lives by slicing their stomach open as penance for whatever it was that disgraced them. Though, the process of doing that doesn't always instantly kill the warrior. So in history, when someone had to commit harakiri, there would always be a second person in standby to cut off the head after the deed is done to ensure the warrior dies quickly.
