Hey, not to like totally downplay any of the (rightful) anger about the Flannagan Carrie show, but. Mike Flannagan pretty consistently only uses the word "adaptation" because companies tell him he has to. He has stated pretty regularly that he prefers to make "interpretations". None of his "adaptations" follow the main media to a T, because he's interpreting them for the world right now and also himself. A lot of you who are either King, or Carrie fans, specifically might know that Flanagan made the Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game movies a couple years ago. He then did The Life of Chuck in the last few years. None of those are exact adaptations either! I do have to tell you that this happens with every group of fans for a type of horror or a specific authors works when Flanagan does them. Poe fans HATED Fall of the House of Usher, but as someone who loves those stories, and is willing to give most things a fighting chance, it's one of the most succinctly retold versions of Poe's works. The Masque of the Red Death takes place at an orgy/rave, which is pretty much as close as one can get to a Masque in a modern show that people will understand. And that's not to mention how hated Hill House is for Jackson fans. Or Bly Manor. Flanagan is NOT ADAPTING CARRIE. He is interpreting the tropes and basis of the narrative of Carrie into a different story and universe. It is okay if you don't like it, it is okay if you don't want to watch it, but please go into the piece understanding the actual intent of the medium being played with here. HE IS MAKING CLUELESS FOR STEPHEN KING STORIES. THIS IS NOT THE CARRIE YOU KNOW BECAUSE SHE IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE. THIS IS CHER HOROWITZ COMPARED TO EMMA WOODHOUSE.

Whatever else you can say about Johnny Mnemonic, you have to give it credit for establishing "the best hacker in town is a dolphin, and no, that's not some weird Canadian drug culture slang, we mean a literal dolphin" as a recurring trope in the cyberpunk genre.

(If anything, it's a failure of the broader genre that it didn't take the trope and run with it rather than merely replicating it verbatim. I want to read a cyberpunk story where the protagonists have to negotiate with a deep web data broker who turns out to be an ex-military cyborg parrot.)
