leezrd pen and ink drawings from me and my gf’s road trip.

i never learned much abt dinosaurs growing up (creationist school) so they’ve always been mysterious and fascinating. none of these are actual dinosaurs (duh), but i like to make up anatomy for things that are dinosaur-ish??

#i tried to challenge myself. NO REFERENCE hehehehe. i feel very proud of these sketches #AND practiced line confidence. no pencil sketch!! all micron and fountain pen #i wanna do more like this tbh i learned a lot with patience and rendering!#this is me humble bragging just bc im proud of actually filling up a whole sketchbook page lmao

I just feel like I want to come here to say your painting of Cheese has genuinely touched my heart in such a profound way. For the first time in years I feel inspired to pick up a paint brush again, just for the sake of capturing moments of love with my cats. I was laying on the ground watching TV with my cat whom I had to be parted from for a few days when I saw your cheese painting and I found it so evocative and familiar and tender. And even though I have my kitty back it made me ache again for having missed her. I adore your cheese painting and I just wanted to tell you that even if you're feeling down on it I think it's fabulous and it really made me smile :) Your work is lovely!

#the number one critique i always got while getting my master’s was that i rely too heavily on representational work and the figure #and i didn’t see it then but i DO now and i always feel kinda silly when i paint something representational!!!#anyone feel that???#anyway i’m kinda pissed at the cheese painting but i’m glad to practice a new technique #i like it! but like. it’s readable representation. if i could do it again id blur WAY more and play more with the contrast of a warped #contour. i think. i didnt use a reference tho i just referred to his daily habit of DOING that lmao

cheese sits on the toilet while we take showers, and i like to stand on my tip toes and draw his silhouette in the steam from a high angle, then stand back to see how warped it is from his actual shape

#checking in!!!#sorry it’s been so long tumbly.#been working hard at 3 different campuses. adjunct grind is tough #but i’m having fun and i love my students so much #im applying for a german residency for art!!! no clue if ill get it. excited tho #i have a solo show coming up in august that im making work for. and some animation ideas #other than that. my gf and i met sherilyn fenn the other day in san antonio lol. we talked abt the billionaires eating babies #and she was super candid and sweet. but she LOVED talking abt the Files. which. horrifying.#other than the state of where things are. y’all the CANNIBALISM???#she kept telling us that evil and good exist and you have to push any evil away bc that’s how it wins. which. true??#she’s defo a lil more on the tinfoil hat side of things but i wasn’t gonna NOT talk to her…. cmon.#and aside from some boomer fb stuff she defo talked abt a lot of things i agreed with. we talked abt mk ultra and state level abuse.#she reminded me of my aunt… but if my aunt was more of a lefty than… not a lefty.#despite that we talked abt meditation and david lynch. she sat us down for 30 mins with her. was rlly sweet #i feel rlly good abt that most recent painting actually! i think im finally finding where i need to push??

#thinking of the old lady who swallowed a fly #acrylic on panel #original #catfish #i’ve been having a lot of anxiety abt being the fakest bitch alive recently #yall ever get that??? idk! i’m learning that i don’t rlly have much of a spine and i change a lot depending on my environment. not great.#it’s a weird side effect of wearing a lot of hats and having 3 jobs and balancing art academia and community #and still trying to keep relationships with family and friends #i feel like im masking and masking on top of that. idk what kinda person i rlly am tbh?

#a piece about my mawmaw #american trilogy was her favorite elvis song. they played it at her funeral service #she was a staunch republican. we argued a lot. she was a strong catholic but loved vampires #true blood was her favorite tv show. she could tell you all the characters from the lost boys #she believed that gay people could be fixed and that public universities were brainwashing people into having ‘tolerance’#i never came out to her. sometimes i wonder what would have happened if i would have. i have a lot of complex feelings about her. she could #be so incredibly sweet but then say the most hateful thing imaginable in parroting whatever pastor on TBN wanted her to say #my sister and i are the only people in our family that aren’t republican. it feels very isolating. i miss my mawmaw a lot. i hate that #evangelical christianity can ruin so many minds and tear families apart. i believe it’s one of the most evil ideologies today #she had so many wonderful stories about growing up in toledo bend louisiana. i loved hearing those. there’s a lot of conflict between #stories of her upbringing vs the right wing ideology she adapted to later in life. a lot of people in the south have to deal with this type #of dichotomy in their families. it makes memories hard to recon with!! sorry i’m rambling. i can’t really put out how im feeling on this #i feel like it’s a specific feeling when you’re one of the few family members not indoctrinated in white evangelical ideology watching ur #entire family dissolve into a cult. it fucking sucks.#the ham in the piece is referenced from what my great aunt julianne made for the funeral. the lil angel is a ceramic doodad i got from my #mawmaw’s house a few days afterward. she didn’t have a will. my mom told me to take a few things to remember her. i got her elvis 8 tracks #a ceramic angel and a heavily tobacco smoke’d up denim overshirt. it smells like her and her house #i had it sitting next to me while painting so i could get into a headspace focused on her #one of my favorite stories of hers is about this horrible accident she had when she was 5 #she was playing with a stick horse #in her front yard when her older brother lit some brush on fire. her shirt caught on fire and she got totally engulfed #her aunt joe ran into the yard and wrapped her up in her arms to put it out. she passed out and claims to have sat in jesus’ lap #when she woke up she was in the hospital #85% of her body was covered in burns. i never saw her wear short sleeves at all. it wasn’t until two years ago when she told me i could see #her scars. wild stories

#selling pieces i said id never sell bc im genuinely kinda fucked for the summer lol #i don’t have the energy to do commissions unfortunately but i do have a lot of old work that could get sold to help pay my car note #my job screwed up my title for where i input my timesheets. meaning tomorrow im getting paid less than half of what they owe me.#getting a red tape runaround over the phone about who to call to get it fixed #but i doubt it’ll get fixed in time for the direct deposit. loveeeee teaching with state funded academia
