Hey, not to like totally downplay any of the (rightful) anger about the Flannagan Carrie show, but. Mike Flannagan pretty consistently only uses the word "adaptation" because companies tell him he has to. He has stated pretty regularly that he prefers to make "interpretations". None of his "adaptations" follow the main media to a T, because he's interpreting them for the world right now and also himself. A lot of you who are either King, or Carrie fans, specifically might know that Flanagan made the Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game movies a couple years ago. He then did The Life of Chuck in the last few years. None of those are exact adaptations either! I do have to tell you that this happens with every group of fans for a type of horror or a specific authors works when Flanagan does them. Poe fans HATED Fall of the House of Usher, but as someone who loves those stories, and is willing to give most things a fighting chance, it's one of the most succinctly retold versions of Poe's works. The Masque of the Red Death takes place at an orgy/rave, which is pretty much as close as one can get to a Masque in a modern show that people will understand. And that's not to mention how hated Hill House is for Jackson fans. Or Bly Manor. Flanagan is NOT ADAPTING CARRIE. He is interpreting the tropes and basis of the narrative of Carrie into a different story and universe. It is okay if you don't like it, it is okay if you don't want to watch it, but please go into the piece understanding the actual intent of the medium being played with here. HE IS MAKING CLUELESS FOR STEPHEN KING STORIES. THIS IS NOT THE CARRIE YOU KNOW BECAUSE SHE IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE. THIS IS CHER HOROWITZ COMPARED TO EMMA WOODHOUSE.
Mike Flanagan is doing this!!!! All the time!!!! (For the record Howl's is an interpretation OF AN INTERPRETATION)

Fun fact for anyone who does this, being a misogynistic man isn't funny just because you're trans or you think the idea of treating trans women like women is inherently funny, how funny do you think she finds your "ironic" misogyny when you punch down on the women that don't have cis privilege over you
also no one says it but the punchline of "trans inclusive misogyny" is almost always the implicit assumption that transfeminine people do not actually experience misogyny in our day-to-day life. thats why its considered humorous and acceptable to do, rather than just being. misogyny against women.
I'd even go a step further and suggest that the punchline isn't just the implicit assumption that we don't experience misogyny in our daily lives, but that we don't experience misogyny in our daily lives because we "aren't women" and it's funny to pretend that we are by being bigoted towards us.
When I was four I told my mom I didnt feel like a girl. I didnt know trans people existed. My mom acted transphobicly towards me from that point.
Growing up I was always "too masculine" my parents were trying to force me to be feminine. Schoolmates would ask me about my "secret penis" and be more physically violent with me over other "girls". And cis women would touch me and use me however they felt because they knew I couldn't retaliate.
When I told my friends that my girlfriend was being abusive, they laughed and told me in full confidence that, that couldn't have happened. After all she's just so fem! And Im just so not.
The people that upheld gender rolls around me were not just men or my parents. Everyone is imbued with misogyny. Your parents dont care you dont shave your legs? Well your classmates will. A male teacher is sexist? Dont worry he'll just get a female teacher in to do the misogyny for him and tell all the girls in class how they look like little sluts.
Then I came out as trans and got on hormones and suddenly I'm not man enough. Everyone has to give me advice on how to be a "real man". I need to do the Manly Activities and stop doing the Girly Activities. (Never a woman tho. A dangerous man or a confused girl is all a trans man gets to be)
Is this a typical female socialization? I doubt it. Just like I doubt that trans women have a typical "male socialization"
Everyone grows up with misogyny. Everyone has to unlearn misogyny. Everyone has to unlearn toxic masculinity. Being AFAB does not make someone immune to being misogynistic.
What makes you think growing up as a trans woman excludes them from these kinds of experiences? We know toxic masculinity is toxic but somehow that doesn't apply?
Little girls will be shamed for their appearance no matter what. Little trans girls are shamed for existing. A masculine girl can wear a fully gender neutral outfit and look like a boy. Because boy clothes are default. A trans girl cannot dress in one single item of girls clothes without being mocked. Theres a whole category of bits where a boy accidentally wears something for girls and is humiliated for it. (Because girl clothing has to have different buttons and pockets, lest you mix up the paper thin see through top and shapeless bag with armholes)
Being expected to always perform masculinity drives me crazy and I am a man. How do you think a little girl would feel in that role?
Think of every single "male socialization" thing (backbone, confidence, condescension, misogynistic, over-sexual, lazy, aggressive) that has been tacked onto trans women and ask yourself: "Is there not a million cis women I can think of that do that too?" If the answer you find is no, you are lying to yourself or you have some misogyny to work on. If the answer is yes, stop telling trans women that they are male socialized and stop saying that they are mansplaning or being a manchild. There are words for that, that involve no men (because women do it too)
TLDR: If you use "male socialization" as a weapon against trans women, or think that they were privileged for their childhoods, you should change as a person.
For how often we get told to make our own spaces when we try to join ones that are already existing, it seems like people really don't like when our spaces are explicitly for or about us...
Forever traumatized by realizing that no amount of love can change someone who finds losing you easier than facing their own behavior.

can we bring back the term "fair-weather friend" bc I feel like if fair-weather friends got called that more this whole argument about whether or not you should be there for your friends when it's inconvenient/at what point of personal inconvenience it's ok to bail on your friends would kinda fall apart bc like. we literally have a word for "friend who's only there when you don't need something from them" because the baseline expectation is that a friend should be there even when it sucks. like we used to make fun of people for bailing on their friends.
hey, tag this with a food people get really upset about you not liking
I do think we're far enough off the hype train of Iron Lung to critique just a little bit. But not the movie itself. I have a critique of the fan and critic reception. Mark did not "singlehandedly" produce the movie. He FUNDED IT. Which is still good, but is not actually full production. He also wrote (based on another person's idea, who helped on a grand scale), he Directed (also with help from the original creator), He starred... which is not technically part of production traditionally speaking? Acting is of course very important, but again, we don't usually consider actors as part of the production team. And then he did apparently do a lot of LEAD editing, which most often involves walking other people through how to edit certain scenes, but I have no insight into this specific part. Editing is post-production. But again, the movie had sets, props, costumes, prosthetics, music and SFX. Those are all also production. Mark did not do those, in fact he hired on a pretty ubiquitous youtuber designer for a lot of it, her name is Erika Slay. I have heard basically nobody mention her at all? I don't think Mark was the one who started the idea that he had done most of the work singly, but every time I try to talk to anyone about the movie I get met with this claim. I have had people try to tell me the costumes were probably store bought. As a costume and production designer myself this is one of those pieces of deep misinformation about projects like this that is HARMFUL AND SCARY. You cannot have film, even independent film, without designers. Costumes. Sets. Props. Lighting. Sound. Music. SFX. Makeup. Hair. Characters. WORLD. You need a design for everything you can think of, even if it's a pre-fabricated item with no editing. You sometimes need designers for those even more! This is why we often see the wrong era of toy in movies set in the past, because the designer has no toy experience.
All I'm saying is, in my little circles, I feel as though the idea that Mark fully self produced this thing has become a little too comfortable for some people. Erika Slay has been working as his costume designer since he started making narrative videos. She designed the movie versions of most of the more monstrous bits in this movie for film, credit where credit is due people! And this isn't even including the stagehands, PAs, sound/mixing people, light people, and so many others who almost always get ignored!
OP turned reblogs off but as someone with a crazy wicked scar that's been called "body horror" a few times, I really wanted this on my blog
in fact I think all of these are beautiful, cool, neat, or just neutral. nothing negative about any of it. also goes for implants, I've known people with implants of all kinds be made fun of, but that shit isn't ugly or gross either, it's just neutral and or positive

can i stress the importance of boundary setting? of being able to say no? if you want to be able to play with this shit, or really engage sexually at all, you need to be able to look someone in the eye and say “i don’t want this.”
if you can’t look me in the eye and say No, if you haven’t demonstrated an ability to voice discomfort when you feel it, you are not a safe partner and i do not want to play with you.
specifically what i’m thinking about here, though idk if clarification is needed, is that when you don’t tell me you’re uncomfortable you’re putting me in the position of harming you without giving me the option not to. if you never say “i don’t want this” then i don’t get to say “no problem, we don’t have to!” and you’ll grow to resent and hate me for crossing a boundary that was never communicated to me. actually, this applies to things other than sex too. if you never voice displeasure/discomfort, or direct desire, you’re making it impossible for people to respect you and give you what you want and keep you feeling safe.
good tags. but i want to respond directly to one thing here bc in a lot of ways it’s the crux of what im talking about. “do not let them find out later that you weren’t actually consenting.” the thing about this is that, if you verbally consent, even if you don’t mean it, you DID consent. your partner cannot read your mind. they cannot anticipate that you weren’t actually feeling it. you don’t then get to turn around and go “oh this person assaulted me because i didn’t actually consent” when you said yes and responded positively to every check in. that person did nothing wrong, you failed to communicate. when someone needs to set a boundary and doesn’t, they’re causing the harm in that situation. their failure to communicate is what is putting them in an unsafe situation.
it’s genuinely fucking absurd that cis people have any goddamn say at all on trans healthcare
“oh yeah i mean im not diabetic but i dont really know how insulin works and i think its kinda freaky that you gotta poke your finger all the time so im gonna go ahead and say insulin is illegal”
thats how it sounds.
