I also don’t think, having watched the bed video, that Dan and Phil are interested in that form of semi-retributive justice. They may have the “right” to invade the privacy of those who invaded their privacy (and as I already said, just writing fic is not an invasion of privacy), but they don’t want to. They’ve given their forgiveness and I think what’s most important moving forward is whether or not we’re treating each other with respect right now.

Although ao3 is a publicly accessible website that anyone can look at, Dan and Phil have historically been very good about staying out of fan spaces that aren’t meant for them, and they’ve said that fanfic is one of those things that isn’t meant for them. Although a lot of writers have privated fics for various reasons, most of us have never felt the need to private our fics to protect them from Dan and Phil, because they’ve said they don’t/won’t look at fic. So this is not something I (and a lot of other writers) ever expected. I think they were trying to be respectful by just reading the title, author, and summary, but a lot of writers feel that even that is intruding on a space that isn’t meant for them. I agree, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with expressing that to Dan and Phil. I don’t think they would want to feature someone’s content in a video if it made the creator upset or uncomfortable or if it had a negative impact on the general phanfiction ecosystem. They’re trying to have fun here, not get their revenge on the phandom as a whole.
