Mischaracterizing her, complaining of her having traits they love in male characters, straight up ignoring her, villainizing her for getting in the way of M/M ships, blatant racismā¦ Katara has seen it all.
Sheās literally the last bender in her tribeā¦ put some fucking respect on her name.
Within the fandom, she is frequently relegated to her relationships with male characters. Also, many people simply "do not like" her. I've seen people call her a bitch! I don't think she was ever bitchy. There is an added layer of racism; many people read her as first nations. Native women and girls are always seen as more aggressive by racists.
She is a badass

Reduced her to the Zutara (fake news) vs Kataang ship war, reducing her to the "mom friend," ignoring her complexity, refusing to let her character exist outside of her relationships with men and eroding it within her relationships with men, ragging on her for being traumatized by her mom's murder, flattening her character as much as possible.
This poor girl gets brutally flattened into either "mom friend takes care of everyone :)))" or "miserable spoilsport who is mean to the boys and always yelling :((("
Literally one of the most nuanced characters in all of tv, she WILL be recognized for her fantastic portrayal of complicated trauma and parentification!

Is reduced to one of three things. Either "the mom", "the nag" or "flawless perfect angel" when being bounced back and forth in other people's shipping drama.
Katara is a character with so much complexity. Her kindness underpinned by a trauma, her caring instinct born from being placed into the role of adulthood WAY too early. Having to struggle to be seen as a fighter despite being one of the, if not THE< strongest bender in the group for huge chunks of the show. She has anger, she has bravery, she has purpose and she cares because she CHOOSES to and then has to struggle with the parts of that caring that hurt. Or simply don't come naturally to her. She doesn't grin while cleaning up the boys' messes, she dumps the half empty cooking pot directly on their head and tells them if they're gonna leave it yucky, THEY should wash it (metaphorical but something along those lines) She is more than just Aang's "prize", Zuko's "anchor" or Sokka's "babysitter".

Rewatching Par Avion and damn I forgot just how much I hate how they retconned Claire's backstory. Not only does her mom being in a coma not align with the flashbacks in raised by another (see Claire being worried about how her mom would react to finding out she was pregnant to both Thomas and her friend she goes with to the psychic), but it then just makes her miraculously being fine in seasons 4 and 5 just completely unbelievable.
And ok, sure. Of things Lost is known for, being realistic is not one of them. But according to lostpedia, Claireās car accident happened in 1999, and her mom was still in a coma when Oceanic flight 815 crashed. So youāre telling me that, even if Claireās mom woke up on September 22, 2004, after being in a coma for five years, about three months later she would be 100% recovered and would go to Christian Shephardās funeral and be perfectly fine??? Come on.
And I get they needed to have her not know about Claire being pregnant so she would have no reason to suspect that Aaron was actually her grandson. And of course the flashbacks tie into the on-island plot in showing Claire's optimism in the face of adversity and her refusal to give up despite how bad things may seem (not giving up even though Charlie tells her he doesn't think the plan about the birds is going to work, Claire telling Charlie she won't give up on him regarding Desmond's visions). But I feel like they still could have accomplished both if they just made it so the car accident happened a few months before flight 815 crashed. It could have happened when Claire told her mother about being pregnant: as she predicted, her mom freaks out, they get into a fight about it, then crash because they are angry/emotional/not paying attention. Her mom could still be in a coma when Claire gets on flight 815, but it would only have been a few months, not years. And then when her mom wakes up, she can just have had like short term memory loss and not remember things that happened just prior to the accident and thus not remember that Claire was pregnant. Then her being recovered enough to be capable of going to LA for Christian's funeral would also seem more plausible if she had only been in a coma for like. five months instead of five years lmao.
