Translating jargon seems like a challenge, what with a lot of slang being steeped in cultural context. So with that in mind, how would you translate something as nonsensical as “Lowkirkenuinely””?”
The word was put in text for a reason and identifying that reason is how you define your priorities. Is it just TikToker talk for character voice reasons? Then replace it with Brazilian TikToker language. Is the character's irreverent awareness of 2026 political event relevant to the scene? Grab a quote from the Roblox protests against Lei Felca, you can find wonderful material there in droves. Is it relevant that the dialogue is alluding to major right-wing debater whose most widely celebrated accomplished is that he fucking died? Look no further than Olavo de Carvalho's grave. Options are everywhere if you know what you're looking for.
Your Readers Don't Know
So recently I shared the first 30 pages of my WIP with my writing mentor, and she had some pretty brutal feedback. It was too slow, you didn’t get to know the characters very well, and she said my worst nightmare “it was hard to get into, and I didn’t want to keep going.”
Oof.
My first reaction was to think, well that’s because it’s only the first 30 pages. If she only read a little bit more the characters really start to shine in the next bit—and that question she had about the world is answered just a few pages later.
Then I realized I was missing the point. It didn’t matter if I had the most amazing story after page 30 that would have brought her to tears. Because she would never know—she wouldn’t have read past the point that I lost her.
That was the moment I realized I needed to completely rewrite my first 30 pages. The point was—the reader doesn’t know when it’ll get good. They don’t know that your characters are amazing once you get past a certain point, because in all likelihood, they won’t suffer through to get to that point.
It has to be solid from page one all the way through to the end. Most books and authors don’t have the liberty to retain readers through anything less.
We’re going to be talking about the advice she gave me a bit more in the next few posts, so watch out for that :-)
As a reader, if I can't make it past the first 50 pages without being bored, then I won't continue the book. It really doesn't matter if the "rest of the book gets good", if a reader can't get past a certain threshold, then they will drop the book.
It's important to have a good introduction to your story!
I totally agree with all this.
AND
I often wonder if it isn’t easier to fix after an entire draft is done. That with the entire draft in hand it might not be apparent that there’s a better starting point to cut to.
I don’t actually know, though.
That may just be me.
And I also have a fairly hard limit of 50 pages. I can and do quit earlier. But if I am not enthralled by page 50, that’s it. I will not give it more of a chance. I’ll only keep going for enjoyment or requirement. Life is too short.
I once hacked off the introduction to a story completely and it was instantly better. Just dropped the reader into the action, explained things later.
I mean I tend to give even the shittiest of stories the benefit of the doubt, like I've given stories I don't like at all 10 chapters to get their shit together but I do eventually drop them
I agree with @emptymanuscript, especially if you're a pantser, this would definitely be a problem easier to fix after the draft is finished and you've figured everything out. I only fixed mine after a complete draft (and some feedback).

Ichi the Witch Author Interview in popstyle! - Summary/Translation
So yesterday (Feb 4th in Japan), a newspaper article came out with an interview with Usazaki-sensei and Nishi-sensei about Ichi the Witch!
As far as I'm aware there's no public way to view it, but there's like, a newspaper archive you can pay to access in Japanese... long story short, I was able to find it! Here is some of the interesting stuff (imo) that we got from that interview!
(DISCLAIMER! I am still learning Japanese! A lot of this translation is done by me checking machine tl's and cross referencing them with dictionaries! Please understand there may be errors, that the information presented here is best as I understand it and may be incorrect, misinterpreted, or updated later if I find it to be wrong! Thank you for patience with me!!)
Quotes when used are from Google translate + my own adjusting and referencing.
Comments that are Mine and not in the article are marked in Blue!
Ichi now has over 1.5 million copies in circulation! (Including digitals)
Volume 7 (jp) will come out on March 4th
[From Nishi] The series idea came from Nishi wondering why there were magic women [witches] (majo, the word for witch in japanese is the character for magic and woman), but no magic men. (Statement also made in the author comments in volume 1)
[From Nishi] Originally, the idea had been about a boy who wanted to become a witch, and a knight who protects witches. However, Nishi thought a world with Living Magic would be more interesting. She also thought it would be more interesting if Ichi was "Outstanding", so she decided to make him only interested in hunting.
[From Nishi] "Ichi doesn't have anything. He doesn't have any dreams, he doesn't have anything he wants to do. He's just living day by day[...]"
On account of the last point, Nishi gave him the Death for Death code. She wanted it to be easy to understand (repeatedly a point of emphasis Nishi makes in interviews), and based it off the Code of Hammurabi (eye for an eye). Regarding death for death, Nishi says "But I don't know if that way of thinking is right. It's a very dangerous way of thinking. I'm looking forward to seeing how (that mindset) grows and changes."
Nishi does the panel layout (storyboards, wiki article here) for the series, and Usazaki says Nishi conveys the composition well. Like Nishi's, Usazaki prioritizes readability as well as ensuring fans can see the faces of the characters they like clearly and appealingly. She wants the series to look beautiful and works really hard to make it that way even though the series is weekly! It's tiring, but she enjoys drawing (THANK YOU USAZAKI SENSEI WE LOVE YOU USAZAKI SENSEI!!!!)
Nishi designs the majiks by thinking of an attribute (fire/water/etc), or things that make good attacks. Then, using that kanji as a basis, she builds the Majik around what's most interesting or useful (story wise, i think.) to create an animal or such. She wants to make it simple to understand for even children.
[More under the cut i just don't wanna decimate ur dash. do you love the colour of the ichi interview]
Great News!
The article in it's original Japanese is now avalible online for free for anyone to read!

If you're able to read Japanese at all (or even just wanna run it through a machine tl and not me) here you go!
I've also saved the page on the internet archive, so that if anything ever happens to this one we'll still have a copy of it for future reference!

#okay now join the IWW and train to be a Salter 🤞🏽🤞🏽🥺🥺
Nah besties, don’t keep this one in the tags, how many people on this hellsite even know what a salter is?
So taking a spot from someone genuinely looking for a job just for fun is considered activism now?
The employers will argue that by salting, unions are being “deceitful”. Nothing could be further from the truth. Employers are always spying on their workers (even to the point of hiring specialists to pose as difficult “customers” in order to “test” a worker’s “loyalty” to the company, or encouraging favoritism by having one worker spy on another). Because the employing class has a well documented history of using deceitful tactics (including lies and intimidation) to undermine (legally protected) union organizing efforts by workers, salting is how workers can fight back against repressive and often illegal union busting tactics.
So taking a spot from someone genuinely looking for a job just for fun is considered activism now?
I think you have completely misread what OP is doing, because the whole point is that they are not taking the job. What, do you think the employer’s going to have the salter come in and decline the job and go “well, guess we’re not going to hire someone for that position after all”? No. If they’re interviewing for the position, it’s not a bogus position, it’s one they actually need to hire someone for. Someone is still going to get that job. It might take another round of interviews, but that job will be filled by someone who is genuinely looking for a job.
but when that person gets hired, they will have a better chance of successfully negotiating for a good salary.
That’s what the salting is about. It’s about making the boss or HR person or whoever think “gee, if we want a good candidate, we might have to bump up our salary expectations.” It doesn’t guarantee that they’ll do it, but it does raise the odds of it.
I needed this drag. Let’s change guys and not look back
working out your brain is a must!!
• hydrate it by drinking lots of water
• eat dark chocolate and blueberries and walnuts and salmon and other foods high in antioxidants!!
• play little brain games on your phone; I like wordconenct! anything that makes you think!
• read books. It’s simple but necessary. Even better - join a book club, or read with a friend, so you can have discussions after. This will improve your reading comprehension.
• do puzzles - it doesnt have to be sudoku, I love playing Beat Saber on the Oculus Rift because it makes my brain have to match colorful patterns to physical movements very quickly!
• learn a new dance - even a tik tok trendy dance. Learning new dance moves are proven to strengthen synapses!!
• go bird watching, or foraging, or anything outdoors that requires you to explore pattern recognition and visual searching
• watch a movie with the intent of analysis - this is best done with a cinephile friend!! talk about tropes and symbolism and character growth
• cross stitch, or sew, or do anything that requires matching nimble hand movements to patterns
• play or learn an instrument!
• develop a consistent sleep schedule (or as close to consistent as you can get!)
• when eating, try to identify the ingredients and flavors you’re perceiving!
I hope this helps :)
I like how this went from me feeling like “hm why is this attacking me 🤨” at first, but feeling grateful seeing an added guide on a genuine expansion on a “ how to” work out the brain. This genuinely helps a bunch. People find solace in doing activities that get them through life by doing said activities of phone/tv or if that’s all they’ve ever known in their life to get them through things + etc tho. However, this was very impt to point out. Slowly beginning incorporating things to work the brain in ones own time.
people will have double-digit opinions on kink discourse and still manage to not know what BDSM stands for
