I'm reading a letter from Isaac Abravanel, a major 15th century figure in the Jewish community of Portugal, describing how he and other community leaders raised money to ransom 200+ Moroccan Jews who had been sold into slavery. The Portuguese community appointed 12 men symbolizing the 12 tribes to do this, and they were able to successfully reunite all the families and identify how many people were still enslaved. It looks like they were able to free and reunite everyone but about 30 people at the time the letter was written, as well as provide the Moroccan Jews with food, clothes, and housing after they had lost literally everything (including the clothes on their backs) when they were captured back in Morocco.
Abravanel wrote his letter entirely in Hebrew as part of a correspondence with a rabbi in Italy, and he tells him that this issue has been on his mind constantly day and night as they work to free all the Moroccan Jews and bring them to safety in Portugal.
Even 500 years after this event, we still have the same spirit.

She gave him her hand. Wenk, to whom the name suddenly clarified the circumstances of the escape on that night when Count Told had entered, kissed her slender fingers, surrendering himself all at once to her beauty without restraint, and toying once more with the fleeting thought: Why hunt people and not love this woman?

When I was a kid watching tv was idiot coded and nerds read books, but now scrolling shortform videos is considered braindead behavior and watching tv means you're some kinda intellectual. You might think this shifting assessment of media's consumers might make readers into absolute super geniuses, but no. Only perverts read now.

Insert obligatory disclaimer about my belief in peace and equality and condemnation of settler violence etc etc but it is genuinely fucking ridiculous how many important and historic Jewish locations we are absolutely forbidden from entering. It’s ridiculous how there already was a two state solution when Jordan gained independence and got 70% of the British mandate and how Jews are expected to just surrender our land and our rights to governments that build crap on top of our sacred sites and burial grounds. Whatever. Keep trying to erase our history and blot us out of existence cuz it’ll never work 💙 you can kick the Jews out of the land but the land will always remember us 💙
Jews founded the city of Hebron and now we're not allowed there at all. To a city WE created and lived in for thousands of years.
wdym we are not allowed there at all?? there is an established jewish community there, most of maarat hamachpela is open to us when it’s not ramadan, and the whole thing is open to us on chayei sarah. btw the parts open to us are not open to palestinians (the site is shared but segregated; they can access part of it most of the time, all of it on ramadan, and none of it on chayei sarah), and the palestinian shops on the main street of hebron were closed years ago. unless all of this has changed recently?
hebron is actually segregated. jews can only live in the h2 sector and parts of the old city, as well as kiryat arba. that’s it. the rest is arab.
here:
H1 Zone: Covers roughly 80% of the city, fully controlled by the Palestinian Authority, where Israeli civilians and residency are prohibited.
H2 Zone: Covers about 20% of the city under Israeli military control, housing roughly 800 to 850 Jewish occupants.
Specific Enclaves: Jewish residential compounds in H2 include Avraham Avinu, Beit Romano, Beit Hadassah, and Tel Rumeida.
Kiryat Arba: A separate, larger adjoining Israeli area located on the eastern outskirts of Hebron proper, housing around 8,000 residents.
80 to 20 is a big difference.
we USED to have a larger presence before the 1929 hebron massacre and continuous arab riots and massacres of jews. 1929 evacuation due to arab riots, 1931 return, 1936 evacuation due to arab riots, then in 1947 the last jewish family had to leave because our ancient city was outside our borders at that time. this changed in 1967. the original agreement did not take into account much of jewish historic land.

also you’re wrong about machpela restrictions. for 700 years from the mamluks to 1967 we were barred from machpela. right now we are restricted to certain places like ohel yaakov and ohel avraham. we are banned from ohel yitzhak for all but ten days of the year.
we have the ten and ten rule with muslims but still. being banned from an important site every day of rhe year but 10 days is ridiculous. the restrictions were worse as of a decade ago because of the waqf.
