I feel like starfish are one of those animals that are treated as very “normal” by people but absolutely shouldn’t be. Like they’re a wheel of repeating heads connected by a central stomach. They walk around using thousands of tiny sticky hydraulically powered tentacles. They have an eye on the end of each arm. Instead of having a mouth they just have an opening where their entire stomach can be pushed out to engulf prey. And they’re just allowed to exist like this. It’s not illegal or anything.

I'm reading a letter from Isaac Abravanel, a major 15th century figure in the Jewish community of Portugal, describing how he and other community leaders raised money to ransom 200+ Moroccan Jews who had been sold into slavery. The Portuguese community appointed 12 men symbolizing the 12 tribes to do this, and they were able to successfully reunite all the families and identify how many people were still enslaved. It looks like they were able to free and reunite everyone but about 30 people at the time the letter was written, as well as provide the Moroccan Jews with food, clothes, and housing after they had lost literally everything (including the clothes on their backs) when they were captured back in Morocco.

Abravanel wrote his letter entirely in Hebrew as part of a correspondence with a rabbi in Italy, and he tells him that this issue has been on his mind constantly day and night as they work to free all the Moroccan Jews and bring them to safety in Portugal.

Even 500 years after this event, we still have the same spirit.

#and a note about these letters of his being in hebrew (we have three total extant ones i think? need to look into this more)#people like to casually say that hebrew was only used for “”liturgical purposes“” but the people who were using hebrew on a daily basis #for these liturgical purposes #were also using it for non-liturgical purposes to talk to jews with whom they did not share a first language #we maintained hebrew as a productive and active second language even when it stopped being the first language of most jews in the world #the revival of hebrew *as a first language* needs to be understood in that context #jumblr
