I very much agree with these suggestions. Forcing myself to write was the way I could finally start to become an active rather than a passive user of the target language.

you know what? accents are actually lovely. like you can learn all the languages in the world and you still have a part of your own with you. that’s cute
for anyone looking to learn modern Hebrew, here is a PDF of the Hebrew from Scratch book (level aleph/one). it is the curriculum used by Hebrew University and some of the state Ulpanim in Israel.
אני באולפן האוניברסיטה עכשיו, בסוף רמה א. יש לנו בחינה על כל מילים מרמה א ביום ד. אני צריכה ללומד הרבה ואין לי הרבה זמן. אוף.
Hebrew/Arabic Learning Resource: This Is Not An Ulpan on Instagram
This Is Not An Ulpan is an alternative language school based in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. They offer modern Hebrew and Palestinian-dialect spoken Arabic courses both in-person and online for a variety of levels.
TINAU was founded by expats in Israel-Palestine who were frustrated with the nationalist agenda often found in traditional Israeli Hebrew courses (Ulpanim). TINAU’s teaching style is based on critical pedagogy and democratic learning.
They have an active Instagram account where they team up with NGOs around Israel-Palestine to offer relevant words in Hebrew and Arabic related to social change that you won’t learn in the average language school.

In Hebrew, the word בול (bûl) is used in two ways, both meanings come from different (and in this case also non-semitic) languages.
שני השימושים למילה "בול" בעברית מגיעים משפות זרות, שתיהן לא שמיות:
Precise hit, very true:
בול (פגיעה) - מאנגלית: bullseye.
Postage stamp:
בול (דואר) - מטורקית (עוסמאנית): پول (pûl).
These are the verbs you need to learn in Level א to go onto ב in Israeli Ulpan.
tbh learning hebrew less formally and more through immersion and needing to know certain things to get by here has been really helpful and has made hebrew intuitive for me bc i know phrases or words or conjugations or roots and then i learn the concept b’gadol formally and it really makes sense, or i can read something and just understand without mamash understanding every grammatical thing
If you’re like me and you find duolingo’s format hella confusing sometimes, and just want to know “like, what exact percentage of this language’s course have I finished,” there’s a third-party website that does that shit for you.
duome.eu/YOURDUOLINGONAMEHERE/progress
The amount of data you get is really amazing??? The only real downside is you might get distracted by all the data points instead of working on your actual lessons, lol.
Also, I’ve started doing French again, and they restructured a bunch of things since I last looked, but I like them. Did you know duolingo’s free French course for English speakers has 172 skills spread over 830 lessons?

the worst part about studying languages is knowing that you will never be nearly as good at it as a literal baby
The only reason babies are better at language learning is because it’s their full time job and they don’t get embarrassed
If you, a teenaged or adult human, wasn’t embarrassed and could study language full time you would learn way faster than a baby.
In my defense, babies receive more positive reinforcement than I do as well. Babies will say ha ba bah dah ba hah and all the adults around them will be like 🤯 really? Wow 😱 that is so interesting 😁 great job! 🤗 and then what happened? 🤔
also people who are like “I’ve been studying for a year and I only have an eight-year-old’s grasp of the language”:
how long do you think it took the eight-year-old
