On his first excursion out of his biodome and through Erid (because of course they made him his own xenonite suit) with Rocky and Adrian, they get approached by many other Eridians who have heard of Grace. They coo some and praise the human, and add a congratulations to Rocky and Adrian at the end. It takes this happening a few times before Grace picks out the Eridian word for baby or child in the congratulations, and he’s ECSTATIC, making the assumption that his friends must be having a baby. Of course, he has some questions like “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” and “Why does everyone know but me?” and “When will they be here?” and “Actually, how do Eridians reproduce?”. During his barrage of questions, Rocky and Adrian are speaking to each other in low tones, trying to figure out the best way to tell Grace that the name he uses for introductions and official matters translates to Grace, Child of Rocky and Adrian, Teacher and Savior of the Stars.

Adrian: No, don’t be mean.

Rocky gently swaying Grace: Leaky space blob.

Adrian: No!

Grace grinning as Rocky sways them in the air: Very leaky, squishy blob.

Turns out there's a childhood disease to the tune of measles that erodes the carapace, and the first symptom shows up about a week before any actual damage is caused.

Grace comments to Rocky that one of his students seems to be turning oxidisation-green. About a week later that student has to be hospitalised for this illness.

Eridian scientists realise pretty quick that Grace can detect the illness long before any of their equipment can, and when caught that early it is much, much easier and safer to treat.

I wanna see the unbridled joy on the faces of human schoolchildren who get to meet the first Eridians who come to visit Earth. I wanna see the Eridian ambassadors insisting to the humans that they get a chance to meet their schoolchildren, because they themselves were schoolchildren when a human teacher came to their planet and inspired them to become astronauts.

I wanna see humans getting permission to set up a small embassy somewhere in the Eridani System, possibly even giving a very elderly Grace a chance to see humans again. I wanna see how surprised the humans are that he doesnt want to come home to Earth, but also see them quickly realize just how amazing it is to live, study and teach on an alien world.

I wanna see Humans & Eridians joining forces and creating a massive space program with the goal of inoculating every star in the Milky Way that has been infected with the astrophage. I want to hear them say "the fact that there are three Systems with life this close to each other implies that the whole Galaxy is likely teeming with life- probably even whole civilizations. And none of them deserve to go through what we went through. Screw any ideas about a 'prime directive.' We CAN help, and we WILL help. Lets spend the next 1000 generations saving the galaxy, together."

I wanna see more of this world, generations after these two planets were saved by a pair of alien scientists who became best friends, and who each risked everything to make absolutely certain that the other's world was just as safe as their own. I wanna see these two great peoples coming out of this horrible generational trauma, coming together to celebrate the life that they all get to live with their newly-found cosmic neighbors.

I do think they develop a way for Rocky to hug Grace for real because guy clearly wants a real hug So Bad (and Rocky is learning that it can severely affect a human’s health to never have physical touch with another person. Which. Wild.) I also think Rocky is extremely neurotic about Keeping Grace Alive after everything so yes!! We will figure out way for Grace to get BEST hugs! This Is New Project. Will dedicate Full Time to solution.

Grace is definitely grateful and after getting his first hug in years and crying a lot about it, it probably takes him a while to realize that. Hey. What do Eridians do? What have you been missing like this from being all alone for decades? I know about watching each other sleep and I’m happy to do that for you, but is there anything you’ve been really missing this whole time?

Eridians don’t really cuddle as humans understand it, but turns out they do purr. Sort of. That’s the word Grace assigns it. It’s a low rhythmic sound loved ones will emit at each other in times of calm and relaxation that just means “I’m here, I’m close to you, I’m happy and safe and calm.” It conveys the same idea.

“Oh,” Grace says. “Humans have the idea of humming, is that similar?”

“Not really,” Rocky tells him. “Somewhat. Have heard Grace hum, not the same.”

Grace goes :( “Is there anything I could do that would make you feel the same way?”

“Yes,” says Rocky, and Grace perks up a little because he is also a little neurotic about this. “Human body is much louder than any Eridian’s body. Water inside Grace’s body is sloshing around all the time.” (“Thanks.” “Is true. Humans are sloshy leaky bags of water. Like baby. No carapace at all.”) “And loudest human sound is heartbeat. When Rocky first met Grace, was hard to concentrate because Grace’s heartbeat was so loud and so constant. Rocky wondered how humans ever made any science inventions driven crazy by constant big sound like that. Then got used to it. Blip-A was so quiet. Grace is loud and alive. Now feels like purr. Know Grace is alive and safe and present because Rocky can hear Grace’s heartbeat.”

This is just about the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to Ryland Grace and he probably starts crying again. Just a little bit.

But Adrian, who has not had to directly rely on this man in a crisis or seen him at his most competent -- only meeting him when he was terribly sick -- mostly treats him like an adopted child and keeps trying to parent him
