The Clash - London Calling 1979
"London Calling" is a song by the English punk rock band the Clash. It was released as a single from the band's 1979 double album of the same name. This apocalyptic, politically charged rant features the band's post-punk sound, electric guitar and vocals. It was written by Joe Strummer and Mick Jones. The title alludes to the BBC World Service's station identification: "This is London calling…" which was used during World War II, often in broadcasts to occupied countries. The lyrics reflect the concern felt by Strummer about world events with the reference to "a nuclear error" – the incident at Three Mile Island, which occurred earlier in 1979. Joe Strummer has said: "We felt that we were struggling about to slip down a slope or something, grasping with our fingernails. And there was no one there to help us." The line "London is drowning and I live by the river" comes from concerns that if the River Thames flooded, most of central London would drown, something that led to the construction of the Thames Barrier which came into operation three years after the song. "London Calling" fades out with a Morse code signal spelling S-O-S, reiterating the earlier urgent sense of emergency, and further alluding to drowning in the river.
"London Calling" was released as the only single from the album in the UK and reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart in January 1980, becoming at once the band's highest-charting single until "Should I Stay or Should I Go" hit number 1 ten years later. It was the first Clash song to chart elsewhere in the world, reaching the top 40 in Australia. Over the years, "London Calling" has become regarded by various critics as the band's finest song. It is one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. In 2007, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
"London Calling" received a total of 84,6% yes votes!

They Might Be Giants - Istanbul (Not Constantinople) 1990
"Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" is a 1953 novelty song, with lyrics by Jimmy Kennedy and music by Nat Simon. It was written on the 500th anniversary of the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans. The lyrics humorously refer to the official renaming of the city of Constantinople to Istanbul. The song was originally recorded by Canadian vocal quartet The Four Lads in 1953. (Listen to it here!) It peaked at number 10 on the Billboard magazine charts, and was certified as a gold record.
Numerous cover versions have been recorded over the years, including by Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bette Midler. One of the best-known versions of "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" is the cover by American alternative rockband They Might Be Giants, who released it as the second single on their album Flood in 1990. The single reached number 61 on the UK Singles Chart in 1990. They Might Be Giants later recorded an electronic version of the song for their 2011 compilation album, Album Raises New and Troubling Questions.
The song is prominently featured in the 1991 episode "Tiny Toon Music Television", of Tiny Toon Adventures, for a music video segment featuring Plucky Duck trying to find a missing statue. It was used as the theme in the 1992 TV movie Black Magic. It plays as an ending to the 2005 episode "Mobile Homer", of The Simpsons, and it plays during a donut shop fight scene in the 2019 series premiere, "We Only See Each Other at Weddings and Funerals", of The Umbrella Academy.
"Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" received a total of 93,1% yes votes!

Rainbow flag colorpicked from the original 1978 flag <3
THIS POST ISN’T SAFE FOR TERFS. EAT SHIT AND DIE ❣️
at least can all we agree that the original gay flag with the magic and sex colours is BEAUTIFUL and it should make a comeback
what’s more iconic than this
What about the final version of the flag by the original creator?
Gilbert Baker added a 9th stripe shortly before his death, with the new stripe representing diversity. He added this stripe in reaction to the 2016 US election. It’s unfortunately not as well known as the 8 and 6 striped versions.
Here’s an image of him sewing together the 9 striped rainbow flag.
Happy pride month everyone

From the Nashville Zoo’s fb page! Here’s the petition, please please please take a moment to add your name (even if you’re not from Nashville!). If you are from Tennessee, contact your representatives and make it clear that the people do not want this data center. This is an AZA accredited zoo which is home to several species of critically endangered animals, we NEED to protect it. Make your voice heard!
Because people will pay attention to cute animals, here are some of the critically endangered/endangered species housed at the Nashville Zoo!
The Amur Leopard and Clouded Leopard (which recently celebrated its 50th cub born at the zoo!)
The Sumatran Tiger
The Red Ruffed Lemur and Ring-Tailed Lemur
The Cotton-Top Tamarin and White-Cheeked Gibbon
The Colobus Monkey and De Brazza’s Monkey
And the Mexican Spider Monkey!
Look at them!!!! Look at them and fight like hell to save them!!!!
Adding my own images of Nashville Zoo to this. It’s super important to stand, fight, and continue to spread awareness on this.
There’s so many other great animals at this zoo, and it's done so much in teaching people about animals and conservation.
Other animals includes bats, btw.
Developers are seeking to turn land into a 69,000-square-foot data center next to the Nashville zoo.
Amid a growing number of data centers in Tennessee, the Nashville Zoo is pushing back against a proposed facility near its property, citing
Developer claiming they'll follow government regs when the EPA is openly rolling back regulations.....
