We're getting closer to the end of the Round, but we still have fearsome Megas left to vote on!
Hoenn's thunder dog get channels its inner storm by becoming a literal bolt of lightning! Mega Manectric's on the nose appearance is more apt than you may realise, as mega evolution grants it speed that matches lightning- around 200 million mph- far faster than almost any Pokémon we've discussed so far! Unfortunately, that also comes with such excessive electrical power that Mega Manectric can't control it all, with it running wild and making the Pokémon irritable. With such speed and power, is it any wonder why it gains the ability Intimidate upon mega evolving? This is one dog you're not going to be keeping up with, but maybe you want to give it a vote all the same!
Our other competitor this time is Mega Scizor! Hailing from Johto, Scizor has been a fan favourite Pokémon for decades, and Mega Scizor is a powerful upgrade for the Bug type. Its already fierce pincers become bigger and tougher, with the barbs lining them able to smash through concrete and trapping anything it catches with no hope of escape! In fact, like its opponent in this match, mega evolution bestows almost too much power for Mega Scizor to maintain for extended periods of time. The energy causing this transformation heats up Mega Scizor's body, and it becomes unable to regulate its temperature to stop its whole body from starting to melt! So Mega Scizor hits fast and hits hard, with Technician powering up its Bullet Punch to go first and tear through opposition. It may struggle to maintain its form, but can it maintain a place in the tournament? That comes down to you!
This match sees two very defensive Pokémon get a power boost!
Mega Dragalge is another Pokémon that was introduced in our return to Kalos in Legends Z-A. A Kalos native itself, Mega Dragalge takes its poison to the extreme, as it becomes capable of spitting a vicious venom that causes the regenerative ability of cells to go wild. It can use this to heal itself, but on others, it's a deadly poison with a horrifying real life equivalent! Between its healing ability and its huge Special Defense- the highest of any Mega Pokémon- it can be a menace to try and defeat on the battlefield, and its territorial nature means it won't be going anywhere unless you beat it! A fearsome Dragon type that isn't afraid of fairies, does it win your vote?
Or does a Pokémon of the skies appeal more than one of the seas? Mega Skarmory transforms from a defensive wall to a fast flier with razor-sharp feathers that tears through the skies! Able to break the sound barrier, it uses the shock waves conjured from its speed to send opponents flying before it swoops in with its huge talons. After it mega evolves, its Attack jumps a huge 60 points, and its Speed increases by a similarly huge 40. Mega Skarmory completely changes the way it fights, and its unable to be swayed from its target when it has a move in mind, with its Stalwart ability keeping it laser focused on its enemy! And of course, going from silver to gold, referencing the games it first appeared in, is a nice touch as well. Mega Skarmory is a tough fighter, and maybe worthy of your vote?
In keeping with the current main tournament on the blog, I thought it would be interesting to hear people's opinions on which set of new Mega Evolutions was the best!
We've had four batches of them, spaced across 3 different games and some DLC, and they've all introduced some great new additions to the Mega library. But which one is your favourite? Let us know why as well!
And once the main tournament is complete, we can see if these results bare out in the overall standings. I'm very curious!
Which game introduced the best set of new Mega Evolutions?

Both these Megas have been around since the 6th Generation, so you should have a solid opinion on them by now!
Mega Pidgeot is a more powerful version of the much beloved Kanto regional bird. With brighter, longer, and more colourful plumage, it's not just for show, as Mega Pidgeot is able to whip out gusts of wind powerful enough to smash through even the largest of trees! And its increased muscle strength gives it a lot more stamina, now able to fly for two weeks without resting, so watch out if it's on the hunt! Something interesting happens to Pidgeot when it mega evolves, it's the only Mega to have its formerly lowest stat become its highest. It gains a huge 65 points in its Special Attack, going from a measly 70 to 135, putting it on par with some of the most powerful Pokémon to come out of recent Generations, not just its own! It also gets a good bit faster too, able to swiftly dispatch opponents with its attacks that will never miss thanks to its No Guard ability. Everyone loves Pidgeot, but what about its Mega? Is it loved enough for success in the tournament?
It's the harbinger of the snow and ice, it's Mega Abomasnow! With its unique type combination- the only Grass type with this distinction- it's always stood out from the pack. And it's going to continue to make sure you notice it, with the buds on its back having transformed into large icicles that whip up blizzards of temperatures around -30 degrees Celsius- roughly the average winter temperature of the Arctic Basin, the most northern location on Earth. It's no wonder then, that Mega Abomasnow retains its ability to summon the snow, with its ability of Snow Warning. With both of its offensive stats at 132, and defensive stats of 105 each, it can be an absolute monster in battle, so stay on its good side! One of many memorable Generation 4 Pokémon that has received a huge upgrade, is that enough to see it through to future battles in this tournament?
I always find such nice exact results very satisfying! And it seems that no matter how hard the blizzard howls, Mega Pidgeot is able to power through! Congratulations to one of Route 1's most iconic residents.

Two Megas memorably fought against in Legends Z-A are up against one another!
Another one of the Megas revealed prior to the release of Legends Z-A was Mega Hawlucha! A memorable fighter from Generation 6, Hawlucha had a prominent role in the anime for a time, but now has had new life breathed into it. Through the power of mega evolution, Mega Hawlucha becomes a lot tougher, with new strength flowing through its muscles and greatly enhancing its defensive skill too! Always a show off, Mega Hawlucha likes to take advantage of its newfound defenses to showboat and boast in the middle of battle, taunting its opponents into attacking- before it strikes back with its signature move! This makes sense with its new ability- No Guard- meaning that none of Mega Hawlucha's attacks can miss, but none can miss it in return. And with Entrainment, it can give its ability to its allies too, which can lead to some pretty crazy strategies in doubles! A fun and fearsome take on a Fighting type Pokémon, will it fly through to Round 2?
Up against Mega Hawlucha is Mega Clefable! The Normal-turned-Fairy type now sprouts wings and can fly! Though it's not actually using its new wings to fly, despite appearances, it actually harnesses the power of the moon to control gravity around itself! This pink Pokémon also constantly emits sparkles, not really for any particular battle purpose, but that's just the aura it has. Now able to soar above its opponents, Mega Clefable is a fair bit more powerful too! It gains 40 points in its Special Attack, and remains as bulky as ever with beefed up Defense and Special Defense. Clefable has been a classic of the series ever since the beginning, and with a long deserved new form, Mega Clefable gets a bit more time in the spotlight! Will it be able to hang in there and make it further in the competition?
Mega Hawlucha is the winner of the match, claiming a knockout victory despite the type match up! Mega Clefable may soar, but not high enough for this fight.
These two seem to be the opposite end of the spectrum of soaring Megas!
Mega Altaria takes the already incredibly soft appearance of its base form and turns it right up to 11! Now practically engulfed in its cloud-like down, it seems extremely soft and delicate to the touch, but in actuality, just a few strands of down could be used to life a truck! Its cloud wings are not the only parts of Altaria enhanced by mega evolution though, with its beasutiful singing voice taking on a an even clearer quality that can induce wonderment in listeners. Don't be mistaken though, even though its very soft and pleasant, it can still hold its own in battle! Mega Altaria is the only Mega to have unique type combination, with no other Pokémon sharing its new Dragon and Fairy typing. Its Normal type moves become Fairy type as well with the Pixilate ability also granting a power boost to said moves. It may not have the highest stats, but Mega Altaria has respectable defence and offence, and can definitely hold its own. Has Mega Altaria's sweet singing captivated you too?
Well if soft down doesn't capture your heart, then perhaps you prefer the sharp, venomous barbs of Mega Beedrill? A classic Bug type from Viridian Forest takes on a terrifying new form, with the highest Attack and Speed of all Poison types at 150 and 145 respectively. In exchange, it has the lowest Special Attack of all Poison types, or of any Mega Pokémon for that matter, at 15. Mega Beedrill is all offence and no defence, but if you aren't prepared for the kind of damage it can do, you won't even have a chance to take advantage of its poor defences! Interestingly, Mega Beedrill carries two different types of venom. In its limb stingers, a fast acting poison waits for those it jabs to stop prey from fleeing. In its tail stinger though, is a slower acting poison that it uses to finish off already weakened opponents. For those who don't like real insects, facing Mega Beedrill must be a terrifying prospect frankly, and sometimes that's what a Mega should be! Does that get it a vote in your books?
Just a few more matches left in this set, and we've still got some of the strongest- and the strangest- left to go!
Mega Salamence has been called the blood-soaked crescent, and with its brutal rage only increased by the mega evolution energy, it's easy to see why. When it flies, its razor sharp wings slice through anyone standing in the way, and it won't hesitate! Like all the psuedo-legendary Megas, Mega Salamence carries a terrifying base stat total of 700, with monstrous offence and swift speed. Accompanied by an ability that turns its Normal attacks into Flying ones and boosts their power- Aerilate- you do not want to be on the other end of one of Mega Salamence's Double Edges! It doesn't appreciate that mega evolution twists the wings its so proud of into a new form, but despite that, it has incredible aerial agility and skill, with even the most complex topography not posing a challenge to soar through. I wouldn't want to anger this Pokémon, so maybe it needs your vote to pacify it?
Barbaracle has always been an overlooked and odd Pokémon, but Mega Barbaracle gives some new life to the Kalosian barnacle! With Barbaracle being made up of several individual Binacle units, Mega Barbaracle multiplies further, into 11 distinct Binacles, each controlling one of its 8 arms, 2 legs, or head. All these parts working in tandem, Mega Barbaracle becomes a fearsome fighter, even gaining the Fighting type that works alongside an ability that further increases the power of moves that make contact with the enemy. Mega Barbaracle uses its many arms as a distraction, messing with opponents and drawing attention away from where the next strike is truly coming from! And when those strikes do hit, with 140 base Attack, they're going to hurt! Will you give this underappreciated Pokémon a little more love?

In the southwest corner of Paldea lies our next challenge, the penultimate gym badge! So we head south from where we fought the Titan Bombirdier all that time ago, and make our way to this huge cavern we'll have to cross in order to get there.
It's gonna be a bit of a trek!
I've got a good few Pokémon in the box at this point that I really want to get trained up- some of them will be able to fight now, and some are just a few level caps away from their full potential. That means we're going into battle with a couple of weaker party members in the back! And these trainers are strong, so I'm going to have to be extra careful today.
There are many, many trainers along the road, and lots of items to collect too. But I'm happy to report that we got through the cave without casualty- and on the last battle before we reached our destination, we had a big evolution!
The newest member of the box, our Mareep, evolved not once, but twice on the road to the gym! I've chosen to name them Goldenrod, as suggested by @tall-bearded-fool, for the colour, the city in Ampharos' home region, and it also brings to mind (for me at least) the ability Lightning Rod that is usually associated with Electric types, and also the Olivine lighthouse- where the most famous Ampharos resides.
But it's just a few paces further before we end up in the beautiful town of Alfornada!
It's a town that reminds me of my own experiences in Spain when I visited many years ago at this point. And it holds challenges ahead!
That means it's time for more training, so after I heal up, it's back to the cavern for raising up our Pokémon even more.
We even get another evolution, with Tundora becoming a Glalie! It's nice to have the addition of an Ice type, and it's good he's now more on par with the rest of the team.
So, with some training done, I head to the gym building, only to find someone waiting for us. Yep, that's right, it's Nemona! And she's not mucking about this time, it's time to fight!
She leads with Lycanroc, and we lead with our Gliscor, Claret. It's an easy match up, with a single Earthquake handling the dog! Next up is Sliggoo, who manages to get some damage off with Dragon Pulse after it survives one Earthquake- but it doesn't withstand a second. Nemona's third Pokémon, Pawmot, doesn't even manage that much! With Claret having torn through most of her team, as Nemona sends in Meowscarada, we counter with Pink the Dipplin. Meowscarada can't do a thing to us, so Pink just chips away and finishes the battle with Dragon Pulse.
An easy win later, and Nemona is off on her way. Apparently at this late in the gym challenge, only around 10% of challenges are still earning badges- and we should be proud of that! I expect we'll be seeing Nemona again in battle before too long...
Now, on to the gym test! And it's being led by someone unexpected...
Dendra, one of the teachers from the Academy, helps out Gym Leader Tulip with her gym test!
Apparently Dendra lost a battle against Tulip when they were younger, and the loser had to do whatever the winner wanted. We're not given any more details and instead are left to infer the rest... Hm...
Anyway! For our test this time, we're doing Emotional Spectrum Practice, or ESP. We just have to copy Dendra's expression and then battle a couple of trainers. Piece of cake! The second trainer does push us a little, but with Prism by our side, it's hard for us to go wrong.
But now, the gym test is cleared and it's time for the main event. Here's the team we're heading in with:
I needed bulk and power, and moves good on the Psychic type! This one was a little tricky to narrow down, but let's hope my choices were the right ones.
We meet Tulip, busy on a phone call about her cosmetics brand. Seems she's not just a gym leader! But she likes our style and gives us her full attention- and it's time to fight.
Tulip starts with Farigiraf, and we start with Claret! We're faster, doing about a third of its health with Night Slash, as it does about a quarter with Zen Headbutt. We follow up with another hit, bringing it down in range of one more hit as it goes for Reflect! We won't be able to knock it out with another attack now, which could be awkward. So I opt for a U-Turn, switching in Prism, who's immune to the incoming Zen Headbutt, and we finish it off with Dark Pulse.
Tulip's next Pokémon is Gardevoir, whose Fairy typing is a little scary for the team! I don't have great answers to Fairy types right now, but we go to Coffee, who takes about 40% from a Moonblast. We can survive a critical hit because of our Leftovers, so I decide we need Light Screen. And it's a good thing I checked that Coffee survives a critical hit, because the next Moonblast does just that- leaving Coffee with 7 HP! We have Light Screen up though, so we can take more hits with our other Pokémon. Scary, but good job Coffee! I bring in Ash, who tanks a hit well, then fires off a Shadow Ball, leaving Gardevoir with just a sliver of health! It goes for an Energy Ball, which was a little frightening, but Ash remains just over half HP. We Aqua Jet for the KO.
Next up is Espathra, and we go straight to Prism, avoiding a Shadow Ball on Ash! The bird can't do much to Prism, and we're healing slowly with Leftovers too, so it gives us a chance to put ourselves in a better position for Tulip's ace afterwards. I knock Espathra down to about 40% with Dark Pulse, and then we click Wish. We switch over, back to Claret, who takes the hit and heals back up to full from the Wish! This leaves us in the perfect spot to KO Espathra with Night Slash, and Claret still has full HP for the final Pokémon.
And it's Florges! Knowing it's going to Terastalise immediately, we go for Night Slash- Claret goes first and does about 40%- but then Florges attacks too, and does 40% back. Light Screen is gone at this point, and though Claret is holding the Assault Vest to mitigate some damage, this flower is strong! Now we have a problem. If Florges survives the next hit and lands a critical, then Claret is dead. Both Ash and Coffee are too weak to fight Florges, and Prism and Pink are weak to its Fairy moves. Goldenrod could take a hit, but then we'd be back to the same problem again of risking the critical, and Goldenrod isn't as fast as Claret either.
I weigh up all my options. Ultimately, I decide that using U-Turn to switch will just put me in another bad spot next turn. I have to risk the critical now, and we also have a better chance of landing a critical hit with Night Slash anyway! Maybe we won't need to take another hit?
Night Slash lands. No critical. Florges goes for Psychic and...
No critical! Claret survives in red health, but that's all we need to outspeed next turn and pick up the final knockout with one more Night Slash!
And with that, we earn our next badge!
That was a bit close at points, but no deaths is always something to be proud of. Great job team!
Back at the gym building, Rika is waiting for us again- and she's brought a very small friend!
This is Poppy, and she's a member of the Elite Four?? She must be very talented to be there at her age. She claims to be stronger than us- which is probably true for now- but she looks forward to fighting us later!
We've now met 3 members of the Elite Four, and the Top Champion too! A lot of people believe in us, so we have to make it all the way.
And helping us with that is our next order of business- an egg! As our reward, we're hatching this egg from @pokemonblack3white3, and it's...
Rolycoly! A very welcome sight considering where we're headed next! It's also a Pokémon I've always been interested in using but never have had the opportunity until now, so I'm very excited. Thank you so much!
Naturally, we'll need a name for our new friend here, so leave your suggestions in the comments and I'll reveal the choice next time! And speaking of next time- we're going to be facing our last gym battle. Can you believe it? Well, wish me luck, and I'll see you all then!
Just a few more matches left in this set, and we've still got some of the strongest- and the strangest- left to go!

It's another type mirror match! This time, Steel types are on display!
One of a few Generation 5 fan favourites to get a Mega in Legends Z-A, Mega Excadrill doesn't disappoint in being a powerful new form for the mole! With mega evolution energy flowing through its body, Mega Excadrill becomes essentially a giant drill, with the giant spears of metal on its head and arms coming together when it attacks. The Pokédex says that when it does this, it can destroy literally anything! is that exaggeration? I can't say, but I'm not willing to wait around and find out! One piece of evidence in its favour is its ability, Piercing Drill. Even when a Pokémon uses Protect, blocking all moves, Mega Excadrill can still push through and do damage anyway! It's one of the only Pokémon able to do this, along with Mega Golurk and Urshifu, so it's no slouch in battle. With a lot of power at its disposal, it's a worthy Mega for a classic Pokémon, and will that earn it your vote?
Going up against it is the Mythical Pokémon Mega Magearna! This Pokémon was created artificially 500 years ago, and its Mega form unlocks abilities that have been hidden away inside it since the beginning. It removes any limitations it had in its way, leaving it with the highest Special Attack of all Fairy types at a ridiculous 170, but in exchange it locks away all its emotions- becoming a heartless fighting machine. That means in battle it is absolutely ruthless, and you'd be wise to not stand in its way! On a less terrifying note, Mega Magearna is one of only two Megas- along with Mega Tatsugiri- to have multiple forms when it mega evolves, depending on the form it was in beforehand. The version you see above is the regular form, however Mega Magearna in its original colour form (a form that displays its Mega colours even before mega evolving) has bright white gears around its body, gears that it launches at opponents! With both power and interesting lore, Mega Magearna has it all, but does it have the votes?

Some beasts of the sand are going head to head today!
Mega Garchomp Z is one of the new and unusual Z Megas! A new take on a Pokémon that already got a Mega form back in Generation 6, Legends Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC took Garchomp in a completely different direction. Many people forget that Garchomp can canonically fly, and Mega Garchomp Z takes that up to 11, soaring through the skies at Mach speed, shredding foes with its razor-sharp fins! In this state, Mega Garchomp Z's Dragon type is heightened, even losing the Ground typing and purely focusing on powerful Dragon type attacks. Interestingly, Mega Garchomp Z gets all its new stat points put straight into its Speed and Special Attack, now at a crazy 151 Speed- characteristic of all the Z Megas- and the fastest Dragon type there is. Despite all its power, Mega Garchomp Z actually remains calm and composed at all times, but perhaps that makes it all the more threatening. How do you feel about this brand new Garchomp form?
And against it is Mega Aerodactyl, another blisteringly fast Mega! Unlike its opponent, Mega Aerodactyl is aggressive and irritable, attacking anything that moves- so watch yourself! Some researchers say that Mega Aerodactyl is actually what Aerodactyl looked like before fossilisation, with the mega energy activating dormant genes and allowing it to reclaim its former power. The spikes that line its body are stronger than diamond, and that's reflected in its Tough Claws ability, powering up all moves that make contact with its opponent! With a nasty Attack stat, Mega Aerodactyl's true strength lies in its Speed- 150, the highest of any Rock type Pokémon, and only 1 point slower than the ridiculously fast Z Megas. You'll wanna stay out of its way, but this aerial battle will be one to watch! Which side gets your support?
In keeping with the current main tournament on the blog, I thought it would be interesting to hear people's opinions on which set of new Mega Evolutions was the best!
We've had four batches of them, spaced across 3 different games and some DLC, and they've all introduced some great new additions to the Mega library. But which one is your favourite? Let us know why as well!
And once the main tournament is complete, we can see if these results bare out in the overall standings. I'm very curious!
Which game introduced the best set of new Mega Evolutions?
Pokémon X and Y
Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
Pokémon Legends Z-A
Pokémon Legends Z-A: Mega Dimension
