Season One Bob
i love not doxxing myself i love having an ambiguous timezone and only letting a feww people know the details of where i live and being super mysterious online
My name is Walter Hartwell White. I live at 308 Negra Arroyo Lane, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87104. This is my confession. If you're watching this tape, I'm probably deadā murdered by my brother-in-law, Hank Schrader. Hank has been building a meth empire for over a year now, and using me as his chemist. Shortly after my 50th birthday, he asked that I use my chemistry knowledge to cook methamphetamine, which he would then sell using connections that he made through his career with the DEA. I was⦠astounded. I⦠I always thought Hank was a very moral man, and I was particularly vulnerable at the time ā something he knew and took advantage of. I was reeling from a cancer diagnosis that was poised to bankrupt my family. Hank took me in on a ride-along and showed me just how much money even a small meth operation could make. And I was weak. I didn't want my family to go into financial ruin, so I agreed. Hank had a partner, a businessman named Gustavo Fring. Hank sold me into servitude to this man. And when I tried to quit, Fring threatened my family. I didn't know where to turn. Eventually, Hank and Fring had a falling-out. Things escalated. Fring was able to arrange ā uh, I guess⦠I guess you call it a "hit" ā on Hank, and failed, but Hank was seriously injured. And I wound up paying his medical bills, which amounted to a little over $177,000. Upon recovery, Hank was bent on revenge. Working with a man named Hector Salamanca, he plotted to kill Fring. The bomb that he used was built by me, and he gave me no option in it. I have often contemplated suicide, but I'm a coward. I wanted to go to the police, but I was frightened. Hank had risen to become the head of the Albuquerque DEA. To keep me in line, he took my children. For three months, he kept them. My wife had no idea of my criminal activities, and was horrified to learn what I had done. I was in hell. I hated myself for what I had brought upon my family. Recently, I tried once again to quit, and in response, he gave me this. [Walt points to the bruise on his face left by Hank in "Blood Money."] I can't take this anymore. I live in fear every day that Hank will kill me, or worse, hurt my family. All I could think to do was to make this video and hope that the world will finally see this man for what he really is.
yo mista white ya gotta practice internet safety
jesser i'm on the computer shut up
i think it's a pretty widely accepted reading of the flashback that kim was shoplifting specifically because she was hoping her mother would scold her and set boundaries for her - and unfortunately, her mother falls painfully short. building off of this reading, my biggest takeaway from the scene is that kim learned very early on in her life that she can't rely on anyone else to guide her. nobody else is ever going to be her superego for her. by all appearances, kim grew up without a role model who could teach her right from wrong, and like a lot of stuff in her life, she had to figure it out by herself (i would bet rewatching To Kill a Mockingbird ad nauseum probably played a not insignificant role in this). knowing right from wrong meant trusting her gut, yes - because kim does have an innate and sincere belief in justice and fairness - but it also meant constantly scrutinizing herself to keep her "worst" impulses (just as innate, just as sincere) in check, because she knew that nobody else was ever going to keep them in check for her. if she wanted to do right, that responsibility ultimately fall entirely on her shoulders.
as a point of contrast, jimmy's innate sense of justice has always been a little less straightforward than kim's (e.x., he asks forgiveness and never permission, he belives that the ends always justify the means, and he's never above lying to get what he wants.) also in contrast, he grew up absolutely drowning in "good" influences and role models who hold him accountable for his actions. on one hand he's got chuck, dedicated fiercely to the code of law, and on the other hand he has his father, a principled altruist, and both of them try to impart their worldview onto jimmy. but jimmy's not interested; he thought his dad was sucker and he alway got defensive whenever chuck tried to correct him for any perceived wrong-doing (justifiably defensive, imo, but that's its own can of worms). indeed, craving chuck's approval on chuck's terms not withstanding, jimmy has never really had any interest in keeping his "worst impulses" in check at all - all he's ever wanted was to be loved and accepted exactly as he is, for better or worse. (of course, jimmy finally has that unconditional love thanks to kim.)
and i don't know... like, without oversimplifying things or using this one flashback to extrapolate too much about kim's psychology, i just think that it's really interesting that the Thing jimmy has needed his entire god damn life - for someone to look at the worst parts of him and say "i see this, i accept it, i approve of it" - is the very Thing that teenage kim got handed in that jewelry store parking lot and decided emphatically that she Did Not Want.
When Lalo takes his belt off with one hand⦠Giancarlo gets it.

of course Iāve had gay sex Iām a lawyer
Lalo Salamanca is gay
Disclaimer: I would be shocked if any of the writers/showrunners came out and said they conceived of Lalo as a gay character and intended for him to be seen by the viewers as gay. I would be even more shocked if they wrote him as gay, but then decided to conceal The Truth from the fans for some reason. This is not that kind of trutherism.Ā
Instead, letās put authorial intention aside and engage solely with the text of the show. In this actual essay I wrote because Iām obsessed with AMCās hit teevee show Better Call Saul and Eduardo āLaloā Salamanca in particular, I will prove that a gay Lalo makes way more sense than a straight Lalo.
1) Laloās attitude towards women. Iāve already gone into this here, but I want to expand on it a little further. The Latin American drug cartels are steeped in machismo culture, in which men have authority over women. To a typical macho guy, the way Kim speaks to Lalo in 5x09 would be unacceptable - not just insulting, but a threat to his identity as a man. Even if he thought she had a good point, he would not tolerate that kind of disrespect without pushback.
Lalo has all of the power in that situation. Thereās no reason for him not to yell at her to shut up at the very least, even if he decides killing her and Jimmy would be too messy (although heās heading to Mexico as a fugitive already, so whatās another couple of murders to him?) Instead, he quietly listens to her tirade, considers her arguments, decides she probably has a point, and leaves without another word.Ā
This is a baffling reaction if Lalo is a typical heterosexual, macho narco. But what if Lalo is gay? His relationship with machismo culture would be a lot more complicated. He would engage with it to blend in, but he would see it as mask he wears rather than a core part of his identity. You can take a mask off. Kim was talking sense, even if she was being disrespectful about it. He doesnāt feel obligated to put her in her place to defend his masculinity.
2) Where are Laloās children? The Salamancas are a family dynasty. Itās hard to keep a family dynasty going if no one is having any kids. Tuco is an unstable drug addict whoās in and out of jail, so itās understandable that he hasnāt fathered any children. The twins are reptilian weirdos who canāt separate from each other long enough to make it with a woman.Ā
But whatās Laloās excuse? Heās handsome, charming, wealthy, and stable (relatively speaking). Heās in his late 40s/early 50s, so heās had plenty of time to establish himself. He owns a nice home where he could safely tuck away a wife and kids. Or alternately, he could have a bunch of mistresses and father children with all of them.Ā
Instead, he lives the life of a confirmed bachelor, with only his paid staff to keep him company. Thatās very weird if Laloās straight, but makes perfect sense if heās gay.
3) The Nacho factor. This one is a little fuzzier and admittedly ship-tainted, but bear with me. Lalo is horny for Nacho. Their first meeting in 4x08 can be seen as a seduction attempt from Lalo (especially if you buy into my Nacho Christ/Lalo Morningstar interpretation). Not a literal seduction like he was trying in that moment to fuck him, but heās clearly being playful (in a menacing sort of way) and trying to see if he can get some sort of yes from Nacho, even if itās just yes to food.Ā
But Nacho stonewalls him.Ā Imagine Nacho saying no to Hector about anything. He would be furious at the disrespect. Lalo isnāt. If anything, he seems intrigued. His whole bit about getting Nacho to eat his tacos is not him establishing his authority as Don Eduardo, the narco boss who must be obeyed. Heās trying to a) figure out what kind of guy this Varga fellow is, but also b) see if Nacho will play with him. Itās not ironclad evidence of his horniness since Lalo favors a softer touch with other people, too (Jimmy, for example). But I donāt think itās a stretch to view this first interaction as flirtatious.Ā
Lots of viewers wonder why Lalo trusted Nacho so completely by the end, especially since we know that Nacho had so much hatred and frustration brewing under the surface. Nacho put in a lot of work to earn Laloās trust, as Iāve already talked about, but Laloās attraction to Nacho also plays a role in blinding him to Nachoās true intentions. Laloās a smart guy, but his dick is stupid, as dicks tend to be.
Letās go further and take a closer look at 5x10. Thanks to Kimās advice, Lalo has decided to trust Nacho and bring him into his home. Lalo is a touchy-feely guy in general (see him schmoozing at Don Eladioās party)ā¦but he sure is getting extra handsy with Nacho, isnāt he? And then, by the firepit, when theyāre all alone and every doubt Lalo had about Nacho has been put to rest, Lalo tells Nacho heās āhalfway to being a Salamanca.ā Kind of sounds like a little more than āyouāre my most trusted lieutenant,ā doesnāt it? How does he plan to get Nacho fullway into being a Salamanca? (I mean, they wouldnāt get married and their relationship would have to be on the DL, but in their hearts Nacho could be a fully fledged Salamanca as his partner.)
And then when Nacho suggests they break out something stronger, Lalo is extremely excited about having their own little party, just the two of them, all alone in the privacy of his home, where neither of them have to worry about prying eyes or cartel gossip. Makes you wonder where he was hoping the night would lead. (The answer is he was hoping to take the Blowjob Express to Pound Town.)
So there you have it. Lalo is a gay homosexual, and good for him. In fairness, let me briefly address potential Lalo-is-straight counterarguments:
1) All characters should be assumed straight unless the writers say otherwise ā BOO, this is homophobic and we are doing a dead-author interpretation here so itās not valid anyway, next argument
2) We havenāt seen Lalo suck a dick, ipso facto he is straight ā well, we havenāt seen him eat a pussy either, have we? In fact, he turned down the opportunity in 6x05. IPSO FACTO HE IS GAY.
# also: he is narratively the anti-gus # and having him also be gay makes that reflection so much more poignantĀ # and gusās tragedy so much more profound # because he really fucked it didnāt he? and here is laloĀ # cartel royaltyĀ # the open secret that he loves to fuck menĀ # and gus lost max because of even a small suggestion of fondness (via @femalenacho)
