So I made a thing.
damn look at the notes on this bad boiÂ
ITS TRUE
Teachers have tried this and are amazed when their classes donât go feral like in the book. Itâs almost as if the book was supposed to be satire and not a treaty on the nature of humanity.
thereâs a timeskip
THEREâS A TIMESKIP
THEREâS A TIMESKIP
THEREâS A TIMESKIP
after losing control of the signal fire thereâs a FUCKING TIMESKIP and when the next chapter starts everyoneâs hair is several inches longer and their clothes have rotted to shreds and theyâre still just kind of chilling!!!!
IT TAKES THE TERRIBLE IMPERIALISM MIND-POISONED EXCESSIVELY BRITISH BOYS IN THE ACTUAL BOOK SEVERAL MONTHS TO COMMIT A SINGLE ACT OF INTENTIONAL VIOLENCE, EVEN THE ONE (1) CHILD WRITTEN AS AN ACTUAL SOCIOPATH
AND then when they DO turn on each other it is because
THEREâS AN UNSPECIFIED WORLD WAR HAPPENING
AND A PILOTâS CORPSE CRASH LANDS ON THE ISLAND POST-DOGFIGHT AND THE CHILDREN MISTAKE THE PARACHUTE FOR A MONSTER AND SPIRAL INTO PARANOIA
BECAUSE CHILDREN INHERIT THE LEGACY AND TRAUMA OF VIOLENCE FROM THE ADULTS WAGING WAR AROUND THEM
HURR DURR IN THE REAL WORLD IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN LIKE IN LORD OF THE FLIES -
IT DIDNâT HAPPEN THAT WAY IN LORD OF THE FLIES EITHER YOU JUST HAVENâT READ IT SINCE HIGH SCHOOL IF EVER AND DONâT REMEMBER WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THE GODDAMN BOOK
One of my favorite parts of the Hunger Games was how, in the beginning, Katniss was jealous amd resentful of the townies for not having to work in the coal mines. Then, over time, she realizes they aren't the true enemy. Then she sees the other district kids as so much better off than she is, because at least they don't come from district 12. But then she realizes they aren't the enemy either. And then she hates the other victors, before realizing they have all been exploited just as much as she has. So the enemy must be the Capitol citizens, who benefit from the exploitation of the districts, right? Wrong again. They are just uninformed and pampered people who have been kept in the dark about the true horrors faced by the rest of the country. Most of them, when push comes to shove, are perfectly willing to help the war efforts.
And slowly, over the three books, all theses separate factions of downtrodden people start to see each other as allies instead of enemies, and that is what propells them to eventual victory over the true enemy, the government that tried to pit them against each other. Just fun, totally fictional things to think about that have nothing whatsoever to do with our current life.

Give this woman her job back and a raise
Why are you booing? She's right!
the beginning of three musketeers is so fucking funny like this book is a comedy i swear to god
like imagine youâre dâartagnan. you want to go be a musketeer so you get a recommendation letter from your dad and you hop on the doofiest looking horse in all of france to head off to paris. a weird start, but youâre all good. on the way, a rich guy makes fun of your ugly horse so you fight him. you get your ass handed to you and now youâve been robbed. well whatâs life without adventure, you think, so you sell your uglyass horse to someone who thinks a horse that ugly is pretty novel. thatâs good because you used to be flat broke since again, you were robbed. now youâre walking to paris. you get there, you go to musketeer headquarters. everyone there is arguing and carrying on. three guys, one of whom insists heâs going to be a priest, are talking shit about each other. wack, you think. you meet with the head musketeer and heâs very understanding about you losing your letter. yâall chat, but you see the rich guy that insulted your horse out the window, so you run out to confront him because youâre still sore about that. on the way out, you piss off one of the musketeers that was talking shit earlier. now you have a duel set for noon. youâve been in the city about forty five minutes at this point. on your way to confront the rich guy again you piss another musketeer off and now you have a duel for 12:30. you didnât even catch the rich guy. this will not do, you think, and you resolve to be less annoying in the future. immediately, you piss off another musketeer by accidentally implying that heâs a slut when you were trying to be polite. now you have a duel for 12:00, 12:30, and 1:00. you show up because youâre not a little bitch, youâre just kinda stupid. it turns out all these guys are best buds and theyâre each otherâs seconds for the duels. yâall talk for a minute about how itâs a shame one of them is going to kill you because youâre really not so bad when youâre not being insufferable. youâre about to get on with the first duel when some cardinalâs guards, which is essentially just a rival gang, show up. you all talk smack for a bit, then you fight. the musketeers and you win the fight. you guys bonded over fighting and decide, verbally, to be best pals from then on. you all link arms and skip down the street. youâve been in paris for maybe an hour and a half. youâre about 16 years old.
every english class ive ever had has reaffirmed my belief that english is one of the most necessary classes we have actually
actually most classes, and in general seeing people interact with media make me believe english classes are probably the most important ones i took
there really isnt a single walk of life where learning to analyze the written and spoken word (of any language) isnt important. this is how you learn to understand harmful implications in fictional media. news media. how you learn to dissect propaganda. how certain word choices (intentional or unintentional) can cause irreparable damage. how you learn to see through advertisements. how you learn the weight of peopleâs words. how you learn to exercise empathy if that is not something that comes naturally to you. i know im a bit insane academically but this is definitely one of the hills i willingly choose to die on

macbeth is shakespeareâs funniest tragedy and mr. macbeth is the funniest character in macbeth. he listens to these creepy old women tell him heâs gonna be king and IMMEDIATELY decides the only thing he can POSSIBLY do is kill a guy and then he waffles about it for a full act and finally comes to the conclusion that itâs morally wrong and then HE DOES IT ANYWAY and his entire fucking life falls apart with an inevitability that is genuinely hilarious
the other exceedingly funny thing is that he doesnât even cover his ass that well like??? sure the morning right after the murder he gets away with it but even then he almost straight fucks it by killing the guys he framed. and then within a few months everyone in scotland independently comes to the conclusion that he did it ANYWAY because like. WHO else would it have been
funniest moments in macbeth:
âo? by whom?â (a classic)
âwhat, you eggâ (also a classic)
âtwas a rough nightâ
macduff telling lady macbeth he canât say what happened because sheâs a woman and then spinning around and IMMEDIATELY telling banquo within FULL earshot of ladymac
âthat i did⌠kill them⌠đđâ
macbeth giving the whole âblood will have bloodâ speech and then going ââŚâŚ.what time is itâ
the witches, whom weâve just seen making a potion of baby parts, saying âsomething wickedâ about macbeth. your king steps onto the scene and these literal actual witches go âoh, bitch? a bitch?â
malcolmâs I Fuck Too Much Speech
and then. when he takes it back. he says âwhy are you silent?â which implies macduff is just. sitting there.
âtake thy face henceâ
macbeth absolutely wrecking young siwardâs shit and then just going âthou wast born of womanâ to his corpse
in honor of this post getting an absurd and terrifying amount of notes here are my favorite tags
also, for those of you asking to see macbeth as a dark comedy: i havenât seen a production specifically billed as such but definitely the funniest macbeth iâve seen is the folger 2008 one which, by the way, is free on youtube! it definitely leans into the horror aspect but it also is just. laugh-out-loud funny sometimes like these actors know how to punctuate their lines to get at that absurd humor! and iâve watched it twice in like two months
was anyone gonna tell me Macbeth was a comedy or was i supposed to read that here myself?
Okay, look. Thereâs something modern readers donât understand, because definitions have changed.
To us, a comedy is a funny play and a tragedy is a cathartic one.
In Shakespeareâs time, a comedy was a play with a happy ending.
A tragedy was a play with a sad ending.
That is it.
Shakespeare was a comedic writer. All of his plays are funny to some degree and I suspect the man couldnât write seriously if he tried.
A lot of the time modern troupes miss this and play the tragedies straight. They arenât supposed to be. They are supposed to be darkly, ironically funny.
Because after all, these plays were written to be performed in inn yards where everyone was drunk. That did not necessarily exclude the actors.
A performance of Macbeth that makes you laugh is an authentic, correct performance. One that understands the basic fact that Shakespeare is more like Taika Waititi than Quentin Tarantino.
@watertightvines?
All of this is correct! The production I was in last year purposefully went for laughs on all of those lines. The other two major sources of comedic gold in the play are:
-Lady Macbethâs deeply extra âWoe, alas! What? In our house???â when sheâs trying to play it cool after Duncanâs death. (Honestly, playing Lady Macbeth as Moira Rose for the entirety of 2.4 would be INSPIRED.)
-The Murderers that Macbeth hires both being total dunces and Macbeth just dissing them constantly.
-THE ENTIRE BANQUET SCENE IS STRAIGHT OUT OF A SITCOM. Yes, even the âit will have blood, they sayâ is darkly hilarious if you time it right. The thanes are all sitting there awkwardly while their king screams at the air and has a deeply Surburban White Couple argument with his wife, and neither he nor she will let them acknowledge that itâs weird, and itâs GREAT.
I remember being told in high school that Macbeth is one of Shakespeareâs darkest texts because the Porter is the only comic relief. The Porter scene is the only bit of clowning (which is why I detest the Porter as an audience member no matter how well heâs playedâthe Clown characters bore me!), but I love situational dark humor, and the text of Macbeth is rife with it.
And that makes the tragedy of it hit much harder! When we see Macbeth be a himbo who is Trying His Best, and Ross and Lennox exchanging Pointed Looks, and Macduff get emails every day, and Lady Macbeth snark at her husband⌠then it hurts much, much more when Macbethâ is forsaken in his vulnerability again and again, and Ross and Lennox bring news of atrocities theyâre powerless to stop, and Macduff grieves, and Lady Macbeth unravels. Grimdark productions fall flat for me because they deny the characters the humanity the text enables.
The comparison of Shakespeare with Taika Waititi is spot-on, especially for the tragedies and histories. Iâve railed plenty of times about how The Hollow Crown tries so hard to be Dramatic⢠that it sucks all the fun and humanity out of the history plays, which in turn sucks out all the pathos because we have literally no reason to care about anybody. Shakespeareâs a delight for actors and directors who bother to put in the work because he gives you a lot to play around with, without the constraint of the lengthy descriptions you find in screenplays and modern stage plays. Macbeth and Richard III are both bloodbaths that will make you upset for the character. They are also morbidly hilarious. Embrace it!
This is not Loss.jpg artistically, but it is mood wise.
This is the best thing you could ever say to me thank you
Iâm going to DIE at this English class analysis of my comic thank you so much I love you
i had to bring it full circle
itâs a goddamned matryoshka doll of memefuckery in here some days

i knew this conceptually, but like you dont really KNOW that public school is designed to set you up to be a good worker bee until you're cracking out a report, after hours, at 7 pm on a monday night and it hits you; oh, i'm doing homework, this is why they made me do homework, and suddenly i'm feeling it in my chest. i cant believe i was raised by the state to be an automaton, and worse, i am one of the lucky robots who isn't doing manual labor.
ya know what fucking reblog this, we SHOULD be mad
