I gotta tell ya (aside from the company being crap and doing that crunch thing) the cyberpunk game really isn't as bad as tumblr is trying to make it out to be. also, that whole seizure thing, there's a warning at the beginning of the game for photosensitivity just like any other game. Also, there's a disclaimer that states that they don't condone or support many things that appear in said game.
Ah okay. I donât care about the game in general, I just keep seeing a bunch of stuff that makes me ??? lol. But thanks for explaining it to me!Â
It's been really overdramaticized. Something constantly coming up is how "transphobic" the game is, which is just blatantly untrue. I'd imagine this stems from the fact that the pronouns other people refer to your character as are based off the voice you choose, which is, in Layman's terms, "fucking what???" I get that this isn't the best way to do it. It would be better to have just let you choose which to use, but there's obviously no intent there.
Aside from that, you're able to play as a transgender character (and the one in the trailers is loosely hinted at being trans from a gameplay perspective, though this can't be confirmed canon since the footage is pre-release,) and another notable character (Claire) is trans as well.
Once again, it's brought up that the game is "constantly sexist," which again is untrue. The only thing that could possibly be seen as "sexist" is the involvement of prostitution, which just... isn't sexist.
And racism comes up a ton as well. If you've been paying attention, I've said that the previous are untrue, and this one *mostly* is as well. I'm only even saying mostly here because *I guess* you could see part of the portrayal of coloured characters as "stereotyped," but it's not "bad" stereotypes.
So, essentially, people just say "Cyberpunk bad" and all agreed without thinking about it. I don't at all condone the work crunches that occured, ot course, but that's the only "problematic" part of the game. Even then, the game was delayed by over a year to give them more time to work on it while trying to prevent crunching as much as possible.
The game is *really* buggy, but none of the (many) bugs I've encountered are actually game-breaking. They're just funny for a few seconds until you carry on with your day.
I can't comment on the epilepisy, as I'm not epileptic. But from my uneducated point of view, people made it seem as if it was *constantly* flashing bright lights in your face, which it doesn't. There's a few scenes where you do unfortunately have flashing lights. Again, I can't comment on the severity of that, since I'm not epileptic. The only problem I had with lights was from a temporary visual bug with one of the cars that hurt my head.
I finished it a few hours ago, and it's a *really* good game, everyone is just shit talking it without knowing what they're talking about.
Well, thanks for clearly it up!Â
The problem with the epilepsy thing is that the patterns of flashing lights in the headset scenes specifically resemble medical devices used to induce seizures. There is a difference between âyeah weâve got some random strobe effects in cyberpunk-y nightclubsâ and âthis is very very close to a device DESIGNED TO INDUCE SEIZURES INTENTIONALLY.â Almost every game ever has a âbtw you might get seizuresâ warning for the pure sake of liability. What Cyberpunk needed was to:
a) not specifically emulate a device that, again, IS INTENTIONALLY USED TO INDUCE SEIZURES
b) make the fact that it has a much greater risk of seizures than normal (as well as much worse seizures) much more plain and upfront, specifically stating the effects they were using, why itâs worse, etc.
I donât know whether it was done intentionally (itâs a hell of a coincidence if not, though I do generally prefer to attribute mistakes like this to error rather than malice), but the epilepsy thing really is a step above and beyond (in the worst way) the normal level for video games -- even for cyberpunk setting video games.
I personally donât have much of an opinion on the game in general. Iâm not its target audience, and Iâm okay with that. But the epilepsy problems are such a severe health risk that they really did need to provide a greater level of care and caution than they ended up doing.
