Everyone, and I do mean absolutely everyone, regardless of your level of tech literacy, should learn to pirate media.
I don’t mean finding pirate streaming sites, those can be taken away just as quickly as “legitimate” streaming services can be.
I’m talking about downloading everything you love to a drive you own in your home.
Movies, tv shows, music, books, games, YouTube videos, everything.
With direct downloads, you hardly ever need to torrent anything anymore (although it’s a good skill to have anyway), and that means you don’t technically have to pay for a VPN. (though, I still recommend either mullvad or airvpn)
As much as I hate recommending Reddit for anything, r/piracy and r/piratedgames both have incredibly useful megathreads (that you should read throughly before trying to download anything) and freemediaheckyeah is pretty extensive too.
If you’re concerned about supporting the artists who make the art you enjoy (and you should be) obviously you should try to support them directly. BandCamp is great for that when it comes to music specifically. But also remember that who’s ultimately giving artists the shortest possible end of the stick are the companies who distribute their art and take the vast majority of the profits, not you.
Yes, streaming movies, tv and music and licensing games through things like steam is more convenient, but if that’s all you have then you have nothing.
Don’t let convenience rob you of ownership.
