Discord Red Flags: Signs Your Community Isn’t Healthy
[Summary of this post]
This is a guide to common warning signs in Discord communities, including (1) toxic positivity, (2) gaslighting, (3) tone policing, (4) derailment, (5) groupthink, and (6) lack of transparency. It explains how these behaviours show up in online spaces, why they are harmful, and how to recognise when a server’s culture is becoming unhealthy. It may also help moderators and community leaders reflect on whether their server shows any of these patterns and consider healthier approaches.
Discord is a wonderful tool for bringing people together. Large servers can become lively communities where people from all over the world casually drop in – someone shares a picture of their lunch while someone else says goodnight. These spaces can feel familiar and fun.
But even in friendly communities, server culture can slowly turn sour. Sometimes people contribute to a harmful environment without realising it, genuinely believing they are helping. Other times, the harm is subtle enough that many members stay oblivious while a few begin to feel uncomfortable.
When you get to know people on a server, it can become difficult to acknowledge that something is wrong. You might find yourself becoming a bystander, or if you’re negatively affected, you might start doubting your own perception and feeling increasingly distressed.
To avoid that spiral, it helps to recognise early warning signs of an unhealthy server environment. Below is a summary of common red flags, based on personal research and guidance from Discord’s own Safety Center, as well as other sources.
[Red Flags to Watch Out For]
1. Toxic Positivity
Toxic Positivity is defined as the pressure to maintain a positive atmosphere by suppressing or dismissing negative emotions, concerns, or criticism, even when those criticisms are valid or necessary. (MedicalNewsToday, 2021; Psychology Today, 2025; Verywell Mind, 2026a) While a positive outlook is considered to be good for mental health in general, it can become harmful by invalidating the individual's genuine emotions, resulting in experiencing guilt and shame, leading to avoidance of authentic emotion (Verywell Mind, 2026a)

Negative opinions about characters, storylines, or community issues are discouraged or shut down.
Difficult topics (e.g., racism, misogyny, harmful behaviour) are avoided to “maintain civility.”
Criticism is reframed as “drama,” “negativity,” or “hurting the feelings of people who are there for fun,” sometimes using cutesy or infantilising language (e.g., “yucking someone’s yum”).
Triggers are sometimes dismissed as mere “squicks,” minimising the seriousness of someone’s trauma response.
Supportive‑sounding or therapeutic language is used to shut down criticism instead of engaging with the concern.

This becomes harmful if the fandoms use "positivity" as a shield:
to protect specific characters, narratives, or server members above others
to avoid all forms of conflicts including those that are necessary (discussion) for growth or constructive change
to maintain a curated image of harmony
to silence marginalised voices
to avoid acknowledging harm
2. Gaslighting in Groups
Group gaslighting happens when a community dismisses or reframes someone’s concerns in a way that makes them doubt their own perception or emotional response. (Verywell Mind, 2026b; Healthline, 2024)

Concerns about racism, misogyny, or unsafe dynamics are reframed as “overreacting,” “misinterpreting,” or “being hostile.”
The group insists that “everyone else is fine,” implying the issue lies with the individual.
Moderators demand excessive “proof” while ignoring the context or lived experience behind the concern.
People who raise issues are subtly pressured to apologise, soften their words, or doubt their own interpretation.

Group gaslighting can make someone feel isolated, confused, or ashamed for noticing a problem. Over time, it can cause members to:
suppress their own discomfort
stay silent to avoid backlash
internalise blame
leave the community quietly
This is one of the most common early warning signs of an unhealthy server culture.
3. Tone Policing
Tone policing occurs when the focus shifts from the content of a concern to the way it is expressed. The person’s tone becomes the issue instead of the problem they are describing. (Business Insider, 2020; Verywell Mind, 2026c)

Moderators focusing on the speaker’s tone rather than the behaviour or pattern being raised.
Prioritising group comfort over the validity of the issue raised.
Expecting marginalised members to express concerns in a way that feels “palatable” to the majority.
People who express concerns are told to “assume good faith” in situations where harm or bias is being named. They are labelled as troublemakers, accused of bad faith.

Tone policing silences people by shifting responsibility onto them rather than addressing the issue. It discourages honest expression and reinforces existing power dynamics.
4. Derailment Tactics
Derailment refers to conversational strategies that shift attention away from community issues being raised. Instead of engaging with the concern, the discussion is redirected, minimised, or reframed so the original point is never addressed. (Derailing for Dummies, 2010)

Questioning the motives of the person raising a concern and suggesting they are acting in bad faith.
Asking for excessive proof in a way that stalls or invalidates lived experiences.
Redirecting the conversation to unrelated topics to avoid addressing the issue.
Focusing on small details instead of the broader concern.
Reframing the concern as a misunderstanding or overreaction.

Derailment prevents communities from resolving problems. It can silence people, shift responsibility onto the person harmed, and create an environment where raising concerns feels pointless.
5. Groupthink/Group Behaviour
Groupthink occurs when a community values agreement and harmony more than honest discussion or critical thinking. Members begin to follow the dominant viewpoint, and disagreement becomes uncomfortable or discouraged. (Janis, 1972; Psychology Today, 2026) According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (2019), online environments can intensify groupthink by increasing social pressure and making dissent feel risky.

Moderators or long‑term members consistently reinforcing each other’s views on community behaviour and norms, creating the impression that their perspective is the only acceptable one.
Difficult topics being avoided to preserve a sense of unity or positivity.
A clear divide forming between an “in-group” and everyone else.
Members feeling pressure to agree with the dominant viewpoint, even when they have concerns.

Groupthink makes it difficult for communities to address problems. It can silence individuals, reinforce power imbalances, and normalize unhealthy behaviour. In fandom spaces, it often appears when criticism of characters, storylines, or community norms is treated as a threat to the group’s identity.
6. Lack of Transparency
Transparency is essential for trust in any Discord community. When moderation happens behind closed doors or rules are applied inconsistently, members are left confused, anxious, or unsure of what is actually happening.

Inconsistent penalties: similar behaviour receives different consequences, and the reasoning isn’t clear to the community.
Rules enforced unevenly: some members are corrected publicly while others are handled quietly or not at all.
No reliable place to raise concerns openly: channels meant for feedback may be locked, closely monitored, or discouraged, leaving members unsure where they can speak.
Posts or messages about concerns being removed: this makes it hard for others to know an issue was raised at all.
Moderators directing all issues to private channels (e.g., tickets, DMs), which prevents the community from seeing patterns or understanding outcomes.
Members feeling vulnerable in private channels (DMs or tickets), where moderation happens out of sight and they have no safe place to document or share their experience.
Members “going quiet” without explanation: timeouts, strikes, or bans are not communicated, so it appears as if people simply left on their own.

When moderation is hidden, members cannot understand what is happening or why. This creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear, and it allows harmful behaviour, including from moderators, to go unchallenged.
Conclusion
These signs don’t always mean a server is malicious, but they do mean you should pay attention to how the space makes you feel. Healthy servers make space for concerns, listen when something feels off, and adjust when needed. Unhealthy ones often repeat the same patterns, dismiss feedback, or protect the status quo instead of the people in the community. If you recognize several of these warning signs and attempts to speak up are met with defensiveness or silence, it may be a sign that the environment is not willing to change.
In those situations, the safest and most peaceful option is often to step away without fanfare. You do not need to justify your feelings or convince anyone on your way out. Your well‑being matters, and you deserve to be in spaces where your voice is respected.

It should not be a minefield to ask for a channel. Even if this request was "in bad faith" it should have been duly considered and voted on by the community. I see no reason channel requests should not operate that way. An easy 'yes/no' vote.
If someone is requesting the channel because they don't wish to see the ship, why not provide the tools to avoid it where reasonable? As I understand it, at that time there was only the one general MB NSFW channel and two SFW MB channels (MBART and MBGurathin). If someone's request from two years prior is influencing your decision making when newer persons make requests, please, examine where that bias comes from.
Stemming from that, you are treating triggers as squicks. I am normally able to simply mute a channel for several hours when my trigger comes up, but my trauma is over 18 years old and I have had a lot of therapy to work through that. And still, on a bad day, it can mess me up for hours or even days. I do not mention this often because I don't want to yuck someone's yum, but sometimes someone's yum can in fact ruin my day.
No one owes you an explanation of their triggers, even if it's a character or pairing. No one has the right to tell you your triggers are not valid. But not providing the tools to reasonably avoid seeing such things when there was a precedent for other pairings to have their own channels just seems cruel and uninformed about what a trigger actually is.
I am deeply uncomfortable with the actions that have been taken in the past and more recently regarding mod bias and punishing victims. I will be stepping away from this server and respectfully ask that anyone who wishes to contact me do so via a shared server or DM. I also ask that you please lock any threads about my fiction or artwork and anyone who wishes to discuss any future works please do so in a space I can participate in. My personal experience with the moderators of New Tideland, specifically, Gamebird
I would like to thank Haze for their bravery in coming forward with their experience with the moderators of New Tideland. In support of Haze, I would like to share my experience with being plagiarized by Gamebird, who is one of the most prominent moderators of the server and the owner of a large Murderbot community here on tumblr.
I don't want this to come across as an attack on anyone who is just casually a member of NT and enjoys its community. I am sure there is a lot to love in that community for many people. However, I think this occurs in spite of, not because of, its leadership.
I would like to emphasize that all of the events I am going to describe happened after Gamebird became a moderator of NT in September 2024. I don't want anyone to harass Gamebird or the other NT mods about this, or anything like that. If she was just another member of the fandom, I would complain to my friends and we would block each other and that would be it. But she continually places herself in positions of authority and has, at least in her interactions with me, abused it. So I think her behavior, and the behavior of the other moderators of NT in dismissing it, is relevant in evaluating if you think NT's leadership can be trusted to nurture a safe environment for everyone, or only for themselves and their friends.
For context: I do not regularly participate in the Murderbot fandom on Tumblr, but I have been a regular on The Murderbot Diaries 2.0 discord server under my chosen name, Prism, since December 2020. You may also be familiar with my fanfiction under the pen name "mensah" (formerly "lick") on AO3. I joined NT shortly after it was founded in 2022, but never posted more than a handful of messages there. I was peripherally aware of Gamebird because of her presence in 2.0, and we had mutual friends. However, we had no relationship prior to this incident.
Although I was not an active member on NT, I would occasionally search my name and the names of some of my fics there, as I do on other servers including 2.0. I would do this because I would sometimes find conversations where people had discussed my fics, and I always liked reading those conversations. While doing this in late December 2024, I found a message Gamebird had sent in NT which included a word document in which she had collected various timelines of the series.
When I saw this, I remembered that a few days previously, I had seen Gamebird promoting a reference she published on AO3 attempting to construct a timeline of The Murderbot Diaries books. When I looked at it, I discovered that the A/N credited me as Prism, among a handful of other individuals. I was initially miffed because while Prism is my chosen name, it cannot be used to locate me on AO3 or Tumblr, so it was not an appropriate way to credit whatever contribution I had made to the work.
Upon closer investigation, however, I discovered that the section of the timeline covering books 1-4 was largely directly copy-pasted from a timeline published here on tumblr by another fan, and a timeline that I had posted on 2.0 in 2023 (1, 2). The extent of the copy-pasting can be seen in these images:
I confronted Gamebird in the comments at the time, and she expressed that she was glad that she had "found me". In light of the message that I had originally seen on NT, I realized that she had essentially been copy-pasting various fandom resources into a private document on her computer with only minimal notes about the sources. It appeared that when she decided to collate the sources into a single timeline on AO3 she made no effort to trace the original source or contact the creators before publishing on AO3.
I ended up demanding co-author status on the work, since I had literally written a part of it. I did not receive an apology from her for her behavior until over a month later, when I disclosed to the 2.0 server mod who had mediated the conflict that she had not apologized to me.
Ever since this happened, whenever she promoted or talked about this timeline, she talks about the timeline as if it was a collaborative effort rather than plagiarized work she was forced to give co-credit for. When I called her out for doing this in the past on tumblr, she asked me to keep things private.
Towards the end of 2025, Gamebird started being kind of weird about the fact that I have different usernames while talking about me on NT, including using me as an example of an individual on 2.0 who "change[s] their name[] often" (1, 2). This pissed me off because I interpreted it as an attempt to justify her failure to appropriately credit me. It was also not true: I have not changed my tumblr URL since 2018. I have consistently used the display name Prism or Pris (a nickname) on 2.0. I changed my AO3 username exactly once since joining the fandom, in May 2025. Also, even outside of our personal history, I thought it was just an inappropriate way for her to talk about another member of the fandom.
When I opened a ticket to try to talk to the other NT moderators about my concerns regarding her ongoing behavior around this conflict, I was completely dismissed. I was told that in the future I should "self-regulate" and settle personal grievances outside of the server, which is very funny in light of NT's recent policy change, in which they have started disciplining fans for behavior in interpersonal disputes occurring outside of the server.
My entire dispute with Gamebird could have been avoided if she had simply respected other members of the fandom enough to reach out to me privately about my timeline before publishing it on AO3. If she had, I probably would've told her that it was okay, or possibly asked to lightly edit the writing because what I had posted on 2.0 was a rough personal reference, and I probably would not have requested co-author status. Instead, she barreled forward without even trying to figure out who I was, tried to cover it up, and continuously promoted the timeline despite me being very clear that I wanted to forget its existence.
I would like to reiterate that every single one of these events happened while Gamebird was an NT moderator. After I finally left NT this morning, I discovered that they quickly banned me. As you can imagine, it fucking sucks to get plagiarized by a moderator of the largest Discord server in the fandom, and then have her hold a grudge against you because you refused to roll over and let her do what she wanted.

Seeing ship anti/pro stuff being reblogged lately and it just reminded me: I don't give a shit what someone ships. It's not my business. I really do have better things to worry about. Nothing I do is ever going to be based on someone shipping or not shipping something because it's simply irrelevant.
In the lolita community, there was an advice server for new lolitas. It turns out the mods were reposting these newbies on 4chan and used a secret mod channel to mock the new lolitas. The community found out and banned them from all lolita communities going forward, and they haven't been seen since. We rooted out the bad apples.
I am leaving New Tideland because the mods have done the same and bullied several of my dear friends out of the server. They also attempted to bully them out of the fandom, including Haze, who is a wonderful person and doesn't deserve this malicious slander. This elementary school behavior is something I will not support. For my friends still in New Tideland, if you want to stay in touch with me, join the Murderserver or contact me through dms on Discord or Tumblr. I no longer choose to waste my time supporting the mods' unkind and contentious behavior, and I hope my mutuals here will do the same.
Since the mods dearest of certain pro-Gurathin server, decided to call out requesters of MB/M channels over a couple of years, I think I'm allowed to speak out as one of the people who requested that channel when the server was 3-4 months old and had around 200 people.
At the time me and people I interacted most with were being constantly moved around by four of the original mods. Either to threads or to new channels made so we wouldn't talk as much in general nsfw channel, I suppose. One of them: secunit-shagshack thread, if I remember correctly, was actually requested by me. The mods made it basically on the same day. But when I noticed that all mods at the time were big mensahbot fans and there was a lot of discussion around that ship also coming from server members - I was in favor of making a dedicated channel for that ship - the same way there was a MBG or ARTMB channels.
I didn't know at the time that mod's pet ship had to be talked about everywhere, that asking to make a dedicated space for it was a crime. And I admit, I did not share that ship. And that I was unpleasantly surprised to see it in gen nsfw channel - don't go away yet! - at the time that server had a special "no humans" shipping role. Except that preference didn't apply everywhere - it only applied to sfw shipping channels as it later became clear. So my unpleasant surprise was mostly because I thought I would NOT see any MB/human shipping (including MBG or any other MB/human ship) because of the role I choose while entering the server. But just that one lukewarm expression of surprise (I said something like "one fear" - I don't remember the exact words but it was the furthest thing from some imaginary "wider campaign") was enough to paint a fat black target on my back.
From that moment on, mod's buddies would harass me, the mods would harass me and some of my then friends who agreed with me. Just after 3 months on the server I had leave for few months due to all the stress and heartache it caused me. I was asked by one of the mods to explain my personal trauma in detail - something that is intrusive and wholly unacceptable. Afterwards the same one of them told me that a better space for me would be the other non-shippy server (the one all the other mods and future mods painted as the worst place on earth - which is something they still do to this day) would be a great fit for me. Me, who mostly interacts with the fandom via shipping. It was all packaged in nice words, but the intent was clear. Go away to a place we think sucks. Leave this server. But of course, I didn't do anything to warrant kicking me out and people were already feeling like the server was imploding.
This is the full recounting of my involvement with mensahbot channel creation topic. I did nothing else regarding the ship or the shippers of that pair. I had not asked for any new channels or threads since then and limited my interactions as much as possible.
There's so much more to the whole story, but my mood is already sour enough and it's Sunday as I write this, and I don't know if they haven't deleted everything that showed them in a bad light anyway. Not that I could see any of that - in the end I was kicked or banned (I still don't know which, no matter how much I asked) without heads up or any reason given after 3 months of me not being active at all. I had no chance to archive my noodling and comments under my art. Mods explained to me that if I wanted to publicly discuss this issue I would forfeit my right to the privacy. It might have been the privacy of our interactions, but the only privacy they're trying to protect is their own.
And if they meant privacy in the wider meaning of the word, then the current mods have my name and address and could try to use that data against me.
The first drama pretty much almost killed the server. One mod left after finally blowing up at needling of one of the mod's buddies to remove me. The mods learned their lesson and now know how to hide the harassment behind closed doors. They would even adopt new mods and set them against people with whom they had a silly beef OVER SHIPPING. It could be unserious if they haven't hurt so many people. It evolved into something way more dire and actually dangerous to all people on their server who might catch their negative attention. Because of their harassment life was and still is in danger. It was that traumatic.
To summarize, dear Mods Dearest, DO NOT ever mention me, not even in the most vague of ways especially if you're about to LIE to people.
in 2023 Haze asked for a Mensahbot shipping channel in New Tideland to help server members curate their experience
mods didn't want to do this and repeatedly harassed Haze for the next two years because of this simple request
at one point while attempting to get an answer for why they had been issued a formal strike, Haze was informed by New Tideland's head mod that if they wanted to discuss their situation wrt New Tideland server with anyone else openly, they would "forfeit their right to privacy"
mods never explained what exactly they meant by this but it would be fair for anyone who is a member of NT who's ever had a ticket or private discussion with mods to be concerned about this, and especially so if mods have any identifying information about them
mods eventually kicked Haze from the server with no explanation given and repeatedly refused to discuss the reason for Haze's removal from the server with Haze or anyone else, despite multiple requests for clarity on the issue from multiple people
yesterday mods posted an update to an ongoing discussion about racism, misogyny, and other prevalent biases in the server, insinuating that the reason they feel so concerned about these discussions, and questions of opening new channels for popular ships, is because of their history with Haze, whose character they further assassinated with outright lies
they also implied that the reason Haze was eventually kicked was because they had requested a Mensahbot shipping channel, which mods characterized as "part of a wider campaign to limit the pairing's exposure in the server" – all because they simply asked for the tools to appropriately curate their own fandom experience
Anyway the key takeaway here should really be the part where the mods threatened my friend's privacy in a petty effort to keep them quiet about the prolonged harassment they had faced by the mod team and many of the mods' friends. It's not a good look for a team of mods currently entrusted with the well-being of a community of over 1600 fans.

"I cannot reply to the thread as my commentary does not align with its current purpose and I feel that other voices should be more prominent in that regard but I feel that the argument that mb-mensah did not have its own channel for so long because of a bad faith ask for one is just a little ridiculous considering Mensah's prominence.

It should not be a minefield to ask for a channel. Even if this request was "in bad faith" it should have been duly considered and voted on by the community. I see no reason channel requests should not operate that way. An easy 'yes/no' vote.
If someone is requesting the channel because they don't wish to see the ship, why not provide the tools to avoid it where reasonable? As I understand it, at that time there was only the one general MB NSFW channel and two SFW MB channels (MBART and MBGurathin). If someone's request from two years prior is influencing your decision making when newer persons make requests, please, examine where that bias comes from.
Stemming from that, you are treating triggers as squicks. I am normally able to simply mute a channel for several hours when my trigger comes up, but my trauma is over 18 years old and I have had a lot of therapy to work through that. And still, on a bad day, it can mess me up for hours or even days. I do not mention this often because I don't want to yuck someone's yum, but sometimes someone's yum can in fact ruin my day.
No one owes you an explanation of their triggers, even if it's a character or pairing. No one has the right to tell you your triggers are not valid. But not providing the tools to reasonably avoid seeing such things when there was a precedent for other pairings to have their own channels just seems cruel and uninformed about what a trigger actually is.
I am deeply uncomfortable with the actions that have been taken in the past and more recently regarding mod bias and punishing victims. I will be stepping away from this server and respectfully ask that anyone who wishes to contact me do so via a shared server or DM. I also ask that you please lock any threads about my fiction or artwork and anyone who wishes to discuss any future works please do so in a space I can participate in.
