a secunit
It was already gone
As chunks of stone hit the floor, Three leapt back to me and grabbed me around the waist.
It said, “Please hold on. I will—”
“I know!” I yelled and grabbed it around the shoulders. “Just go!”
It bounced up the stairs, two levels, three levels. (Being carried like this was really uncomfortable, I can see why the humans don’t like it.)
The problem with gunships is they want to shoot at stuff. That’s why they’re so expensive to write bond contracts for. I said, No, don’t shoot at us. For fuck’s sake, ART. If everybody would just let me do my stupid job for one minute.
I love Three so much.
It knows nothing, it has no reference of what to do, it is in such a weirdly bizarre situation, it's so so out of its depth, and still one thing it knows is that it wants to help.

I will never not get a kick out of Three giving its report in Chapter 14 of Network Effect saying “and then something disastrous happened”, while unknowingly talking to the disastrous thing that happened.
Side note: I desperately need their whole interaction from Three’s pov, especially reviewing HelpMe.file. I need to see inside its head so bad.
In "Network Effect", there's a part where Arada and Overse go off to have "sex or a relationship discussion (ew)." At the exact moment the canonical couple has time to discuss their relationship, SecUnit goes "I need to talk to ART" and they discuss making 2.0.
I feel like after ART learned 2.0 sent Three n then Three successfully extracted MB that it wouldn’t correct anyone if they referred to Three n MB as it’s SecUnits. ART even trusts it with its humans!
The scene where Mb thinks it’s gonna leave after giving it its files (essentially a rogues guide to hitch hiking right) and ARTs like. . . No. [it’s too useful, 2.0’s legacy, and mine now.] I don’t think that’s why it wanted your files.
Obsessed with Amena. Teenager looks at murderbot and says yeah you're adopting me. Yeah I think you are meaningfully partnered to my mom in your own incomprehensible way. Yeah I'm your kid now. Not optional
I might come back around and cobble this into a more coherent train of thought when I'm not dead on my feet but. thinking about the role of memory in network effect. in so many ways, we see it as what really MAKES a person.
the clearest example of this is murderbot 2.0. when it loses access to the handful of its memories and files it was deployed with, it almost instantly starts diverging from 1.0! AND those more coherent than I have made many delicious posts about how 2.0's memories are fairly recent and also not woven in with the complexity of organic neural tissue that can't have complete memory wipes and so retains stress responses to trauma that mb partially/doesn't remember. 2.0 being relieved from the memories of that trauma, both digital and organic, make it react and work and interact in completely different ways from 1.0
that of course is the biggest piece of it! but we also see a lot of the absolute horror that is not having access to your memories, and thus a part of your very personhood. ART emotionally breaks down when it realizes the extent of its memory disruption because it can't trust itself to BE itself at that point. murderbot has a similar fear earlier when it first sees ART from the outside and it thinks it can't trust its memorybanks. we definitely see it scared, disconcerted, and uncomfortable a lot through the book (and all of the books. great series for watching a protagonist be scared, disconcerted, and uncomfortable honestly. 10/10), but that scene struck me as particularly overwhelming for mb, particularly when held up with its FIRST meeting with ART (I don't have the book on hand right now, but its initial fear of ART was based on how important being in control of its own head is to it). eletra's struggle with her memory loss acts as a constant backdrop of "hey!! memories are key to who you are as a person!! losing them would be really fucked up wouldn't it!! WOULDN'T IT"
so. the murderbot diaries is constantly asking what is a person and what makes a person, and I think network effect takes a good hard look at memory as one of the biggest part of that! which makes it even more horrifying that murderbot has constantly had its memory wiped! constantly being denied personhood in a million different ways!
