Woo, 5 lbs lost in a week! This is working out well so far. I hope be back in in the 190′s by the end of the month.
It has been awhile since I posted on this blog. I have gained 20 lbs since my last post back in Summer 2017, sigh. However, I decided enough was enough and I wanted to try out the ketogenic diet aka the low carb high fat diet. The last time I attempted this was years ago back in high school, when it was mostly known as the Atkins Diet. It was the summer of 2005 and all I wanted was to have abs/be skinny like Ciara and Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycats Doll. I thought I could subsist on eating Canadian bacon/lettuce and this Atkins Apple Cinnamon bar...while working out by biking/walking and doing the Ab Lounge (dating myself much?). That experiment quickly was over in 2 days, when I couldn’t resist a piece of watermelon. Plus that Atkins bar tasted super awful, I didn’t understand why anyone wanted to consume that.
But now that I’m a full grown adult and can buy my own food and make my own meals, I’ve done extensive research on how to do this properly. I started this past Monday and I’m already down 4 lbs (probably due to water weight). I bought a bottle of the keto strips and it indicates that after 3 days, I have a little bit of ketones in my system! It’s starting out good so far. Funny enough, I started to have cravings for watermelon again...even though it’s not really on my regular grocery list. I read that you can eat in really moderate amounts, but not too much because of the high sugar content.
Things I’ve learned for myself so far on this diet:
- Trying to make cauliflower rice or mashed cauliflower to substitute as regular rice or mashed potatoes doesn’t really work for me. I might as well just have a piece of protein with two vegetable side dishes in it’s original form.
- Neither does trying to substitute zucchini noodles or spaghetti squash as regular noodles helps me either.
- I didn’t really have a sweet tooth before I was on this diet, now all I think about is having a sweet treat.
- I was never a fan of sparkling water or La Croix before I went on keto, but it sure tastes amazing now that I am on it.
Oh wow! I haven’t updated this blog in over a year. There’s been so many changes in the last year. I finally made it out of grad school and graduated. I bought my first condo and have been enjoying living on my own. My parents gave me a nice new car as a graduation gift – a red Toyota Camry SE. My Honda Accord that I’ve had for 10 years kept breaking down, so I had to let that go. I am so relieved that I don’t have to worry about making an unexpected payment for a random repair. Especially now that I have a mortgage to pay and don’t have thousands of dollars to just pay for that crap. I’m also trying to seek out a higher paying, more satisfying job so I can finally leave UNF and start progressing on a real career path.
In regards to my health, I’m surprised to learn that I’m also making progress on that. According to what I put on MyFitnessPal, I weighed around 202lbs after I came back from my San Francisco trip back in January. Despite having to deal with the stress of buying the condo and moving in, I did try to work out at least 4 times a week just to ease my mind. I tried to be conscious of what I eat, but I don’t really eat clean. The part I struggled the most is trying to stop drinking alcohol almost every day to deal with stress. So far, I’ve been able to not have a drink at least 3 times a week…I’m trying to get that down to all week and only have an occasional drink. This past weekend, I decided to weigh myself for the first time since January. I was really hesitant because I was afraid that I was at least 210lbs at that point because how my clothes felt. To my delight, my weight dropped down to 193.5lbs! That’s 8.5 lbs down! I usually have trouble just trying to go down 4lbs. And that’s without being super meticulous of tracking my calories consumed and burned. This has jumpstarted my motivation to keep it up all summer and hopefully get back down to the low 180’s or high 170’s. While I do have a decent workout routine 5 days a week, I’ve been trying to find a place that has good dance fitness classes that I can look forward going to. It’s so difficult to find good instructors in Jacksonville for this and it’s frustrating. My favorite Zumba instructor that I took at UNF for 5 years left after having a baby, and it’s hard to find anyone as good and energetic. Maybe I should take another stab at becoming a Zumba instructor…

Sick Day
I woke up around 6 feeling pretty groggy. Which is weird, because I had a normal day yesterday. I didn’t drink any alcohol and went to bed early. But I was feeling pretty resistant to getting up and felt a bit feverish. So I called into work sick. I’m feeling a lot better now. Enough for me to try out the Insanity Plyometric Cardio Circuit. I powered through most of it, except the floor workout. I don’t seem to do well with floor workouts at this weight. In the end, I burned 429 calories...which isn’t so bad for 41 minutes.
I was pretty annoyed this morning when I stepped on the scale, and it went two lbs back up to where I started. I’m guess it had to do with the sodium interlaced with the two pastor tacos and some tortilla chips I ate yesterday. I bloated up pretty badly yesterday that I looked super pregnant when I wore my workout clothes. Ugh. I want to try to lose at least 8 lbs before I go to Italy in the middle of next month. During that period, I won’t be able to do any other exercise other than lots of walking. I will be going there for a week, and all the meals will involve eating out. I hope it’s not anything too heavy. But then again, I want to enjoy my trip and not have to worry so much about how many calories I’m consuming or burning. The best thing I can do is not overly indulge in everything.
Insanity Fit Test
I’ve heard about the Insanity DVDs for years, but today I decided to try out the fit test just to see how I would do. Needless to say, I got tired REALLY quickly. Here were my results:
Switch Kicks - 125
Power Jacks - 62
Power Knees - 93
Power Jumps - 32
Globe Jump - 15
Suicide Jumps - 20
Push Up Jacks - 20
Low Plank Oblique - 28
I don’t think I will do the full 60 day program, because I definitely don’t have time for that! But I think I will add some of the workouts to my rotation so I can do something different every week.
(FREE) Insanity Workout Videos
there’s a list of insanity workout links going around tumblr but the link is the same for each video???? lmao anyways here is an “updated” version with correct links… this is mainly for me to reference but feel free to use this for easy access to insanity! GOOD LUCK ON YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY!!!!!!

February 2016
So it’s been pretty much a month since I restarted my goal of losing weight. After working out 6 days a week and counting my calories again, I’ve only lost 2 lbs. :( It’s quite disappointing since I have a lot to lose. But I will not give up. I will keep on tracking my water intake. After a week of drinking a gallon of water everyday, it’s become an easy habit to do now. I don’t feel the need to drink coffee every morning, because I prefer to feel hydrated instead. I may have not drastically dropped pounds yet, but I can see a difference of drinking more water. My stomach isn’t as big and bloated anymore, it looks a bit firmer. I don’t get hunger pangs anymore when I restrict my calories. I can’t even finish half of my lunch anymore. It is truly the best appetite suppressant. If I would have told myself when I was 21, I would not have been foolish enough to take phentermine...

Still going strong!
It’s 10:17 pm and I’m just finally getting the time to rest. I did another back to back workout of Spinning and Hip Hop Fitness tonight. It felt awesome! But I think I will only be doing that every two Tuesdays out of the month, because I hate staying at school until 9 pm. I don’t have any classes scheduled during the week, and I want to enjoy the free nights I have this semester! I did 5 Blogilates workout videos last night, and I gotta say...some of it was tough. Especially the cardio ones. I’ve done those moves before from a Jillian Michaels video. But I think it was the lack of predictability and not knowing what’s coming up next that made me not finish a set. I also added one of her long Pilates videos in the playlist and I suddenly remembered why I do not like doing pilates. Yes, I do feel a burn after doing the same move for god knows how long...but it doesn’t get my heart rate up. I would rather feel the burn lifting heavy weights, but know that my heart rate is at least above 130 BPM. Needless to say, I’ll stick to my regular workout routine.
I was just thinking about how around this time last year, I was not at my best at all. I tried to do my regular goal of getting in shape at the beginning of the year, but I was already pulled off track when I was dating this new man and hanging out with new friends. We would drink alcohol pretty much all the time. It was also the time when I actually started to enjoy drinking beer. I don’t know what it was, but every morning after heavy drinking...I would start throwing up bile. It’s not a good feeling when you’re just doing the regular routine of brushing your teeth in the morning, to suddenly feel this churning in your stomach. And then you start coughing really deeply...and then all of a sudden vomit comes out. It was weird, I rarely threw up from drinking even if I did it too much. I also seemed to metabolize it up til that point. I read up on it online and it said it may have to do with the amount of fat you have in addition to how much you’re drinking. But this year, I’ve been working out more, watching what I eat, and drinking more water. My stress levels aren’t as bad after work, so I don’t feel the need to buy a bottle of wine or a six pack of beer to relax anymore. I also tend to not be as sociable when I’m focused on getting fit, because I’m so busy with cooking healthy food, working out, doing chores, etc. I like the fact that I’m finally working on myself after about 3 years of going through all of the drama I’ve dealt with.
