Reading othello and there’s something so interesting in Desdemona being representative of The Perfect Wife and yet absolutely none of those “desirable” qualities actually do anything to help her case. Men will just do whatever they want even if you do everything right! And in fact playing that role to perfection only serves to make her seem more sullied in Othello’s mind when she inevitably fails to live up to this ideal. This is where you can compare her directly to Emilia who is much more headstrong, especially later in the play, and is actually the character to unveil Iago’s plotting BUT! That also doesn’t save her and she is also murdered by her husband. Like it’s fucking miserable

You could go really crazy and say that Shakespeare’s representation of marriage in othello is one that only serves to uphold pre-existing gender norms and only harms/supresses women. Like that idea itself isn’t crazy it’s just kind of basic feminism but I didn’t go into othello expecting that to be one of the main things I come away with
