Hollanov + text posts (part 2)
favorite bits of the cast interviews in the LOTR special features:
Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen all taking the piss out of Orlando Bloom for going on about a cracked rib too much, while Orlando Bloom desperately tries to wriggle out of talking about it (special mention to Elijah WoodβsΒ βoh it hurts, babes, and I canβt ride the horse, babesβ and Viggo MortensenβsΒ βthey can be very fragile, elves, especially theβ¦Mirkwood strainβ¦β)
Ian McKellen commenting thatΒ βthey never did find any suitable underwear for Gandalfβ¦β
Dominic Monaghan going on and on about how Viggo Mortensen apparently had a crush on one of the Rohirrim extras (who like a lot of the Rohirrim extras was a woman in a fake beard) while Vigoo Mortensen just muttersΒ βone could perhaps say something about Mr. Monaghanβsβ¦proclivitiesβ¦β
Dominic Monaghanβs imitation of John Rhys-Davies ordering food at a restaurant for the whole cast.Β βYou have partridge? BRING THE PARTRIDGE!β
John Rhys-Davies talking about an incident with the Lothlorian boats and sayingΒ βif an elf and a dwarf are in a boatβ¦andβ¦the boat goes underβ¦let us say that the blame was not placed on the elfβ while Orlando Bloom spluttersΒ βheβs a big guy, man!βΒ
Elijah Wood talking about how the hobbit actors shared a trailer with Ian McKellen and sometimes they would hear inarticulate bellows of protest from his side when they played loud music in the mornings
Viggo Mortensen talking about how, while filming with those same boats, Kirin Shaw (Elijah Woodβs scale double) started telling himΒ βif the boat tips overβ¦save yourselfβ¦I canβt swim.βΒ
Elijah Wood describing how Sean Astin would try to direct the helicopters to land while they were on location, while the other three hobbits were screwing around and throwing pinecones at each other
Christopher Lee recounting how he had so much trouble going up some steps in Orthanc with his long robe that he stopped in the middle of the scene and said,Β βI cannot get up these goddamn steps, Peter.βΒ
Viggo Mortensen mentioning that he left a weekend rehearsal and went walking down the street still swinging his sword around, and promptly got the cops called on him
who cares if you don't fully "get" the weird postmodernist novel on your first read, or if the experimental arthouse film is opaque to you on your first viewing? you are not being graded. you are not being scored. there is value in the attempt. every time i've read House of Leaves or watched Blue Velvet, I've gotten something new from it. the idea that you might not "get" something and therefore shouldn't bother with it is so silly to me
πππ
Art is subjective. I love rereading novels and rewatching films and finding different interpretations.
Think of how many people, when asked to talk about their favourite piece of media, will say "Every time I revisit it I get something new out of it."
You can rebalance that equation to "Previous times that I read this, I didn't get everything out of it that could be got" and then follow the idea back to the source, which must be: "The first time I read this, I didn't get even half of it."
QED: Your favourite books are likely to be the ones where, on first reading, you felt like you had no idea what was going on.

guys. Guys please you're allowed to say big boy words. please we cannot keep just rolling with the sanitization of every space on the internet ok. you're allowed to say suicide. you're allowed to say porn. they're not bad words, they're just words.
also by ''censoring'' the words with silly spellings you're actually making it much harder for people to filter out. please just say Sex you don't have to call it woohoo like it's the fucking sims. i promise the Word Police aren't going to arrest you
(opening the authorβs works page after finishing a fic) and if im lucky theyβll have written this exact same fic but different a bunch more times

at some point in your life you will be boiling fruit, water, sugar, and lemon juice in a pot to make a syrup or jam. the instructions will tell you to simmer for a certain amt of time. your timer will go off and you will look at the pot and go, "hm, this doesn't look thick enough. maybe i'll let it go for another 10 minutes." this is the devil speaking. it's only so liquid right now because it is at boiling point. it will thicken when it cools down. learn from the follies of my youth and do not let this happen to you
at some point in your life you will be making a sauce or a stew in which you need to add cornstarch to thicken it. and you will prepare a slurry of starch in cold water and think "this looks like way too little starch to thicken this amount of liquid." this is the devil speaking. cornstarch instantly polymerizes at 95Β°C and if you add too much it will turn into an impossibly thick goop.
at some point in your life you will be making some sort of cream based dessert that requires gelatin to thicken it. and you will soak some gelatin sheets in water and think "this is too few gelatin sheets for this amount of cream." this is the devil speaking. it will thicken in the fridge and if you add too much you will end up with milk jelly
at some point in your life you will be baking cookies. you will take the sheet out after twelve minutes as the recipe instructs and the cookies will still be glistening and soft. "these don't seem cooked enough," you will think to yourself, "i should place them back into the oven until their edges are nice and golden." this is the devil talking. this is how you get dry, overdone cookies. the cookies will continue to bake on the warm sheet for several more minutes and then harden up after sitting on a rack for a while. trust the process. trust the process.
at some point in your life you will be adding a small pasta to a soup and you will think "that is not enough small pasta." this is the devil talking. the pasta will absorb the stock and expand. this is how you end up with a soup that is a solid mass of soggy ditalini.
At some point in your life you will be adding garlic to a dish and you will think "that is not enough garlic." These are angels speaking. They are correct. Add more garlic.
every time i start to feel cringe for being too deep in the hyperfixation i remember the intense depression i have waded through and have to remind myself that enjoyment is fleeting (so grab it with both hands), and life is for loving (so hold that love close), and if anyone thinks iβm cringe they must not be having a very good time (and i hope they can find a good time soon).

now lets not rewrite history
To be fair, they did successfully pressure Artur Conan Doyle into resurrecting Sherlock Holmes. You just have to pick easily influenceable solo authors.
Dickens was also pressured into writing a second ending to Great Expectations because the ecpected ship didn't happen. I'm not even kidding, lol.

condo stairway scene gets me every single time bc of the way ilya lingers. the way he takes way too long to tie his shoes & adjust his jeans, the way he stands for a moment even though his cab is definitely there & the way he teases shane as he slowly lowers himself to give the sweetest, most unhurried kiss goodbye.
