I imagine the correct phraseology is:

'One Man Took His Dog And Went To Mow A Meadow',

the aims of the dog being very hard to ascertain to a reasonable degree of certainty, but highly unlikely to include an activity that it is implicitly unfit to conduct.

I suppose that it could be argued that one man and his ox may go to plough a meadow, yet even here there is the suggestion of intent from the outset, which in the ox’s case is rather unlikely, hence the need for a goad.
