How on earth did you take 72 flights in a single year? That’s like. So many days and hours of flying. Where do you go??
Well, I was on a book tour, during which I took over 30 flights in 30 days, so that put me somewhat ahead of schedule, but I also did a ton of TB advocacy this year, from Seattle to D.C. to Copenhagen to London to Atlanta to Manila.
I also took six flights just in the last week.
Part of the problem is that Indianapolis doesn't fly direct to enough places, but part of the problem is that I thought I could do an infinite amount of travel to fight for equitable access to diagnostics and treatment.
But looking back, 1. this kind of travel is totally unsustainable, and 2. I'm not sure it's even that effective. Does it matter to be in a room of fancy people who are making healthcare equity promises they'll never keep? I'm not sure it does. I might be better off making TB memes on tumblr and writing novels that can fund TB work.
I'm always torn, because I want to do as much worthwhile stuff as I can while I'm here, but I'm never sure what constitutes worthwhile stuff and how to balance that work with the immense joy and meaning I feel when I'm with my family.
These are, as the saying goes, champagne problems, and I am grateful for them, but they are nonetheless problems.
