Ash facing her with Haunter- a pokemon trapped in childhood that's been inadvertently hurting people in his search for real playmates- is a really cool way to show off Ash's childlike wonder and dreams as a necessary component of the trainer mindset. What's the point of doing something if it doesn't bring you joy? What's the use of strength if you're all alone, if those who follow you do so in constant fear?

Poipole & The Blinding One, Alola region, Sun & Moon Series

That really does leave Poipole & The Blinding One as the odd one out (especially in that Giovanni's involvement stays contained to Team Rocket HQ), and in hindsight it's clear it only happened due to US/UM's Rainbow Rocket postgame episode, which means the arc that was cross-promoting US/UM required Giovanni's presence. To this day, though, I will always insist a huge opportunity was wasted to not also do a follow-up to that in Sun and Moon's third year, similar to Johto following up from Kanto in his first arc, and his third arc following up from his second arc. I wanted to actually see Giovanni himself show up in Alola, damn it!
