Vamdemon was probably in league with the Dark Masters. The presence of the gateway and pedestal in Homeostasis's lab implies that to be what would become Vamdemon's castle. Like, the Dark Masters took over the place and killed everyone, and then Vamdemon moved in and started ravenously reading up on all the Chosen Children documents left scattered around the place.

However, there are a lot of differences between the novel and the anime and in fact, Etemon never comes back as MetalEtemon and fights Pinocchimon in the novels, as Etemon not knowing who Pinocchimon is would contradict that.

However, @analyzingadventure had a pretty interesting theory. Since Nanomon would fit right in among Mugendramon's Metal Empire, and conveniently doesn't have any memories from before Etemon beat him, he could have been originally working for Mugendramon. If I recall the theory is that since Mugendramon doesn't give a shit about his henchmen and has a very survival of the fittest mentality, he could have just showed up after Etemon beat Nanomon and been like "Fine. You work for me now (Or I kill you.)" and Etemon just decided to go along with it for now (most likely planning to betray him when he gets strong enough.)

If we assume Mugendramon was only giving him info on a need to know basis, that could explain Etemon's ignorance of who Pinocchimon was: He didn't even know Mugendramon was working alongside 3 other guys.

However, it is canon in the novels, at least, that the Dark Network Nanomon was working on laid the groundwork for spiral mountain.

On another note, I'm also personally confident that Devimon was working for Piemon in both continuities, given that:

He hid the tags and crests that Piemon was trying to steal.

Piemon's Nightmare Soldiers consists of other demon and devil digimon, having LadyDevimon and a bunch of Evilmon in the anime and also having MarineDevimon and SkullSatamon in the novels.

Apocalymon's body is made from the data of Digimon who died just before evolving. It's explicitly stated that the Digimon who died were reborn. However the leftover data, energy and emotion that would go into evolution is instead absorbed by Apocalymon, which basically makes it living junk data. Note that i said it's body, that's because Apocalymon is not a Digimon or even a digital being. It's true form is darkness, a force of stagnation that rejects evolution, the opposite to the holy light of evolution.

That is a lot of fascinating context.

Being a Ghostbusters nerd that I am, a particular interpretation of ghosts I've always been fond of is that they aren't necessarily the literal soul of a dead person. Rather, they're the leftover psychokinetic energy from a particular emotional state or even multiple people's combined feelings poured into a place or object.

This ghost isn't the ghost of your grandma. It's the lingering essence of how much your grandma fucking hated that bus stop.

I bumbled into Future Diary courtesy of my then-fresh Danganronpa fandom, actually.

When I finally gave Danganronpa a chance, I was unexpectedly hooked almost right away. I tore through 1 and 2 very quickly, and I wasn't ready to stop there. When I went online to look for what came next, I found out that "Danganronpa 3" isn't a game at all - it's an anime. And at the time, it was a pretty recent one. (For anyone who didn't know: Yes, the Danganronpa series jumps from video games for the first two entries to an anime for the third numbered entry. There is no non-game adaption of part 2, and there is no video game version of part 3. They just straight up changed mediums. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

For the sake of easy access, I naturally subscribed to Funimation for one month so I could work my way through the anime. And then, once I tore through Danganronpa 3, I decided I wanted to try to get my money's worth out of my month and watch some other stuff on the site.

Rather than just blindly grasping at whatever had a promising log line, I used a recommendation engine to find "If you like Danganronpa, you might like..."-type ideas. This led me to watch some stuff I didn't care for much at all, some stuff I liked a lot, and - obviously - some stuff I LOVED. I fell hard for Mirai Nikki. I was straight crying by the final chapters.

So, yes - like a lot of people, I came in via the anime and not the source manga. This wound up leading me to start watching a lot more anime on a regular basis. I'd only sporadically watched a show here and a show there before this time in my life — mostly stuff that was available in the mainstream, some Miyazaki movies, or whatever aired on Adult Swim at night. That fateful month led me to really become a regular addict, and it also led me to start reading manga for the first time in my life.
