There are definitely aspects of the manga worth critiquing, but a lot of the most frustrating parts of the ending were adaptation choices made by Osamu Dezaki, not things that came directly from Ikeda. Kaoru and Henmi’s relationship is presented as doomed from the beginning and Nanako’s romantic feelings are directed entirely toward Rei, she never develops romantic interest in any man. The anime places far more emphasis on romanticizing heteronormativity than the source material does. Dezaki literally removed most of the explicitly queer and revolutionary scenes and imagery in both adaptations.
