also regarding my theory of jessica as the ultimate villain of dune. i know having villains is not The Point of dune, but nevertheless jessica to me is the character that does the most damage to other characters and to the universe in general;
choosing to give birth to a man (ends in war with the harkonnens since she can't marry a daughter to feyd rautha)
letting her son be tortured?
forcing her 14yo son to become the Kwizatch Zaderach despite every sign pointing to him being unprepared to it in an emotional physical spiritual etc level
drinking the water of life while pregnant and giving birth to a pre born daughter
leaving said pre born child to be raised by her 16yo son who just lost his son
never teaching anything to Paul about ruling
completely neglecting her pre-born daughter, leaving her prone to addiction and grooming from duncan and the baron
completely neglecting her pre-born grandchildren, also leaving them prone to grooming and fuckin MURDER ATTEMPTS
literally letting her daughter kill herself
i love Jessica, I genuinely think she'd be an incredible world changing villain if frank herbert could write anything. villeneuves movies have surpassed the og books in every way and especially in jessica, how sinister and controlling she is. love
re: last post (too shy to add to that person's tags), I felt Leto and ghanimas relationship was a classic case of franks shitty writing giving way to something much darker -- he's very bad at writing and addressing the interpersonal relationships of his characters, leaving everything in such a grey area that you can draw many conclusions from it . some would find this as good and I respect that, but I think it's just poor writing
to me the bad quality of the writing comes from the fact that ghanima never has a character of her own, and this is bc frank overall is bad at writing female characters -- but ghanimas robotic personality makes it seem like she's always being manipulated by leto, groomed by her own twin to become an incubator. but this is the case bc the only way frank can write a female character is if she is submissive to the men around her, otherwise she is seen as evil and is punished (nayla, alia) or mocked (jessica, also alia, siona), and this ghanima and letos personalities appear much darker bc of that
