paul through the dune books!

(rambling abt character design underneath)

dune book 1 - he's still a young boy. his clothes are a tad simpler than they would've been if he was duke. he wears the atreides colors (black, red and green) and always displays the atreides eagle in his clothes.

dune book 3 - still a young boy but forced to be a man, he has a more gaunt face and is skinnier from his life with the fremen. he's more tan and has freckles from the sun. his hair is longer and he holds it up with a silver hairpin that has the atreides eagle. he still holds onto all his atreides belongings to not lose sense of who he is.

dune messiah (start) - now an emperor, paul wears the traditional garb his family would've worn in the distant past with a fremen twist. besides wearing a stillsuit under his robes, the yellow he wears is both to symbolize his status as the emperor (huangdi) and to symbolize the traditional fremen yellow of grief for his lost son, leto ii (the elder). it's important to note his hair has grown down to his ankles, but it's hidden under his mianguan

dune messiah (end) - after being completely broken by the loss of his sight and the loss of chani, paul walks into the desert and cuts his hair — confucian philosophy teaches that hair is a gift from your ancestors, therefore cutting it is a sign of disrespect. here, paul does it to shed any ties to muad'dib and the atreides in general. he weeps tears of blood because it looks neat.

children of dune - nine long years pass after the events of messiah, and in the meantime paul lives in the desert, starving, and lives in sietch jacurutu, witnessing and probably suffering under forced labor, which greatly ages him until he looks like a man in his sixties, dark skinned from the sun with a face full of wrinkles, moles and freckles. and then he dies lol

hi... wow... turns out i really underestimated how much eroica (mostly klaudori) (with special appearance of Q) i drew this year without posting it... haha.... here's some of it...

in this scene dany is being presented to khal drogo, so i made her wearing a more traditional westerosi hair and a dress in her house colors. i thought she'd be wearing a style similar to viserys, who's described as still wearing westerosi clothing even in the heat on their way to vaes dothrak. dany's hair is inspired by brandy's in rodgers & hammerstein's cinderella, but i adapted it to this more renaissance style. viserys is wearing a chaperon because they're kinda funny looking and viserys is stupid.

usul gives moisture to the dead!

one of my favorite parts of dune which UNFORTUNATELY didnt get into either movie adaptation was how often paul cries... his initial breakdown when he first arrives in arrakis was what made him instantly become my favorite. i found it very touching and since i read that first book i wanted to draw something dedicated to it... so here's paul crying at the end of messiah, gone on a journey into that land where we walk without footprints

my piece for "eroica museum", an eroica doujinshi themed around reinterpretations of famous works.

i did "reading" by almeida júnior because i love to shove brasil into everything...

eroica reads "dona flor and her two husbands", a romance/erotic comedy about a woman whose dead husband comes to haunt her and her new partner, who's bad in bed. klaus reads "the posthumous memories of brás cubas", the autobiography of an aristocrat written beyond the grave.

after i finished messiah, i felt really haunted by how jessica left paul and chani to basically raise alia... so i decided to amp up the fucked-upness by making it right at the end of the first book: paul and chani are still grieving leto the elder, paul just became emperor and alia is still a toddler. i decided to fuse the fact that yellow is the fremen grieving color with the legend of the huangdi, the yellow emperor, who paul will emulate himself on.
