Zahn writes Star Wars like he did in the 90′s. The Empire is bad, sure, but it’s a very generic bad that’s hinted at and rationalized and we can sidestep it to focus on the characters that are fun. It’s the sort of Star Wars writing you see from Allston and Stackpole and other EU writers in the same time period.

Wendig writes Star Wars in a very modern “empires aren’t just bad on an overarching generic scale but also to individuals and holy fuck does this get horrifying when you dig into it.” Which is fascinating in a completely different way and aligns very closely to what Disney has been doing with Star Wars for about the past 6-7 years.

The way some Star Wars writers handle Mandalorian-Jedi relations is so funny because you watch the Clone Wars and The Mandalorian and all the Mandalorians are all "the Jedi are our ancient enemy. We hate them. If you see one you should definitely throw down immediately."

Then you go to the Knights of The Old Republic games that litterally invented the Mandalorian Jedi conflict and 90% of the Mandalorians you meet are like "holy shit a Jedi! Huge fan of your work! Getting my ass kicked by your kind was the highlight of my career!"

To further the analogy of Han is the Dog, According to various canon sources, a Standard Human in the Star Wars universe has a life expectancy of roughly 100-120 years. A Wookie has a life expectancy of around 400 years. So, caring for Han for Han’s whole life is a commitment of less than a quarter of Chewie’s life. It’s like having a dog that lives to 20-22. A long term companion, but one you know you’re probably going to outlive.

AN EPISODE VII FANFICTION: THE DARK REBORN

The Galactic Empire has fallen. After forty years fighting a lingering but inevitable defeat following the Battle of Endor, the Empire has agreed to surrender. In a show of good faith, the New Republic has pulled all but ceremonial remnants of their fleet away from Coruscant, their galactic capital, for the treaty signing. Now dignitaries from the two governments meet to usher in a new era of peace and freedom for the galaxy, unaware of the dark threat approaching from the unknown regions…

CHAPTER SEVENTY-THREE: DXUN, 40 YEARS ABE

Light flared in the dim corridor as the two sabers connected. Leia’s foot skidded back another inch. She gritted her teeth in preparation but instead of pressing the attack Revan lifted one hand from the hilt of that bright red lightsaber and reached for their belt from which dangled--Leia’s eyes widened--another lightsaber. Through that ancient, opaque mask there was no way to tell if Revan was smiling, but the chill spreading through Leia as she saw the second hilt slowly lift into attack position felt like the chill of a prey creature looking up into a grin full of teeth.

With a snap-hiss, a blazing beam of green light joined the straining lines of blue and red. Leia’s eyes widened still further as she recognized the long, black-wrapped cylindrical hilt of the green saber. She started to speak, her lips forming the first syllable of a word that started with lu--and then Revan swung the green saber back and forward in a quick, flashing arc.

Time seemed to slow. Leia started to draw her left hand into a fist but stopped when the ceiling gave an ominous rumble. She tilted her one-handed grip on her saber, trying to slide it free of Revan’s blade, but the Dark Lord refused to give ground. Leia drew in a deep breath and closed her eyes, bracing herself…
