Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.

But like genuinely. "humans have an innate need for spirituality" should be pretty transparently a reactionary opinion. It's simply not true and equates something that some people get benefit from with it being a fundamental aspect of being human (and one that is missing it most people today). You gonna start arguing "children *need* fathers or they grow up broken" next?

I think its uncontroversial to say that children need parents* to function easily** in mainstream society***

* gender neutral and not necessarily blood related but I will stand by the plural because they should see that there is more than one way to be or think

** easily not guaranteed if you do have more than one parent but I think the struggle of adulthood is less if there's more than one role model/example

*** if you want to be feral in the woods, ignore everything and be feral but most of us are trying to have a society here

That said, an understanding that many people have some level of belief in forces unseen is pretty much a requirement for society. To quote Pratchett, show me an atom or Justice or Mercy. Belief in a system of laws does not require a god of any sort, but it remains a belief in the unseen. The social contract, if you subscribe to that theory of social organization, is a belief system. The idea that effort applied to help others today will yield a better outcome for you tomorrow requires faith in human nature. That is a spiritual belief, even though it is not belief in god or church.

I think part of the “attractive woman equal dumb” trope (prevalent in many old sitcoms) was the misconception that masks worn for seduction, and job-related entertainment, were the reality.

“She’s dumb and cutesy.” She’s feeding a man’s ego while minimizing how intimidating she is. She’s sweet and vulnerable and not at all smarter than the big, smart man in any way.

It’s cashiers having to smile dialed up to eleven.

Then sitcom writers were like “mask? What mask? That’s who they are. Also, stupid jokes are funny.”

Customer service voice is an excellent comparison, because there's a huge chunk of the population that doesn't understand that CS voice is just a mask either.

Yes, there's an entire underclass of people put there that live to serve, thats definitely true and those smiles are genuine, dont think anything of it. They certainly arent moments away from The Purge levels of violence at any moment.
