After watching Tangled the Series, I realized how much Cassandraâs character arc is based on her name.
Cassandra means âshining upon menâ, but it also comes from the Greek myth of the prophetess Cassandra. Cassandra was a prophetess that was given by the gift of prophecy from Apollo, but was cursed to be never believed. This myth also gives us the âCassandra Complexâ, which is a phenomenon when a person is constantly ignored or disbelieved for their accurate predictions of a crisis or impending danger.
This was constantly seen throughout the show, mainly in season two, when Cass was pushed aside or ignored for her warnings. At the beginning of the season, King Frederic gives Cassandra the task of protecting Rapunzel along the journey to the Dark Kingdom, since itâs her first time in the outside world after leaving the tower. Cassandra does this by providing warnings to the group every time they are about to encounter danger in hopes of having a smoother and safer trip. But she is ignored and treated as a worry-freak until her warnings are proven true every single time. One of the comments on this reddit post captures this essence very well.

Personally, Cassandraâs betrayal can be viewed as her no longer wanting to be silenced. In season one, she was ignored by her kingdom for her abilities simply because she was a handmaiden. In season two, she was trying to protect the group from danger through her constant warnings, but was cast aside until proven right. Sheâs tired of having the responsibility of protecting others when they refuse to listen to her. So she decides to do something big to make a statement: taking the moonstone. She was done being silenced by others, even by those who say they care for her. Instead of protecting others from the danger, she has become it.
In season three, there was a noticeable change in how people treated Cassandra. During Eugeneâs party in Cassandraâs Revenge, Rapunzel and the others were willing to hear her demands. In a sense, taking the moonstone and turning to villainy allowed Cassandra to gain her voice within the crowd.
Overall, these are some of my thoughts. Please feel free to add on or critique anything I mentioned.
Plus, Cassandraâs story reminds me of the ABBA song âCassandraâ. I could imagine Rapunzel singing these lyrics to Cass:
âSorry Cassandra, I misunderstood
Now the last day is dawning
Some of us wanted, but none of us would
Listen to words of warning
But on the darkest of nights
Nobody knew how to fight
And we were caught in our sleep
Sorry Cassandra, I didn't believe
You really had the power
I only saw it as dreams you would weave
Until the final hourâ
