hurting ur friend with a really sad headcanon likeÂ
@theabolisolation dis u?
happy twelfth night everybody, remember to celebrate by: experiencing a shipwreck; crossdressing; entering a gay love triangle; duelling with swords; getting your identity horribly mistaken or just wearing some yellow stockings
Hey if you See This can you reblog this or comment on this with a character you headcanon as aromantic, asexual, or both. It can be canon it can be founded on absolutely nothing I just need more aroace stuff on here #yay
varian of âtangled: the seriesâ fame. (also âvarian and the seven kingdomsâ. sort of.)
he simply has those vibes. that biromantic-asexual swag.
hugo would very nervously ask him if he wants to do it and varian would fling black, grey, white, and purple powders into the air one by one. they would cascade down in a shimmering waterfall of asexual sparkles. varian would point at them and shrug with an âainât that just the wayâ expression.
obviously, the way eugene bursts in with the guards, shouting âget him!â about varian, is awful and needed much more work to feasibly be in-character.
thereâs also a few lines of this:
it is very messed up.
just to get this out of the way: iâm not saying that eugene is abusive or would ever be a source of fear for children. this is a critique of the writing, not the moral fiber of one of the characters.
iâm saying that the plot of the episode revolves around stealing, and the former thief is not so much as contemplated as someone to possibly bring along. in fact, varian views him as yet another frightening obstacle.
(even after hearing, and most likely recognizing, his voice, varian doesnât lose the expression until rapunzel accidentally wallops him with the book.)
(^ incoming book)
the orphaned child trying to steal something to survive (because quirin is his only hope for a guardian, everyone in the castle is connected to frederic, frederic wants him dead/imprisoned, etc) is hiding from eugene! eugene fitzherbert! because varian doesnât trust him!
afterward, eugene never fully earns that trust. he never reflects on whatever part he might have played in all this. yes, he talks about how nice it feels to trust varian again, but he never puts any work in.
that mischaracterization is utterly brutal.

asks are back on this week :)
YESSSSSSSS
my poor, sad little urchin.
you never actually knew me at all
I didn't realize just how short Varian is until I considered the fact that Rapunzel is apparently 5'1 and he is like. Shorter than her. Like holy crap how tall is this kid
RAPUNZELS 5â1?!?!!đđ
so if heâs roughly as tall as her at sixteen, he could be about 5â2 and, technically, itâs possible he could stop growing at that point.
from stress.
and gymnastics.
âwhat iâm most afraid of⌠is losing cassandra âď¸âźď¸AS A FRIENDâźď¸âď¸ forever.â

THE BABIES!! the little ones. the tiniest. augh. so blue and so green. why did we not get childhood friends-to-enemies-to-lovers varigo. someone write it.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/69241641/chapters/228076901#workskin
in which everybody is incredibly well-adjusted.
we need more deaf/hoh!varian content. i do not make the rules.
he didnât react to the roosterâs explosion at all! afterward, he was speaking coherently to lance! there are very few instances where he isnât giving his entire attention to someone speaking to him, as if reading their lips!
yes, we have his comedic spit-take when he hears rapunzelâs greeting in âcassandraâs revengeââ among other examplesâ but⌠câmon. varian on the deafness spectrum. itâs a gift to us all.
i would even âallowâ you hearing fans to headcanon that hugo learns sign language for varian⌠because hugo and varian are linguists. they understand that signed languages are entire languages, not cute little codes for fluff/character bonding, or a trick to show off at parties. theyâd actually respect it.
i got miffed there, but my point still stands.
aughâŚ
-rapunzel and the main group never noticing until varian furiously spells it out for them. their efforts to accommodate him, from that point onward, are just another way theyâre trying to make amends.
-hugo being utterly devoted to being an ally. someone brushes off varianâs polite âcan you repeat that?â with an answer of âoh, never mind!â, and hugo snaps at them.
-cassandra and varian bonding over becoming disabled.
-adding more depth to varian and quirinâs relationship. varian enjoys the fact that he doesnât have to strive to understand his dad, but he still wishes quirin would speak more.
itâs so full of potential⌠itâs so wonderful⌠deaf/hoh!varianâŚ
Iâm hearing and I know very basic ASL, and this is actually one of my fic ideas. I wrote a couple paragraphs for it a little bit ago. Iâm a little hesitant about writing it though, since I am not deaf.
i will boldly assume this is a request for advice and not, say, you just making conversation. iâm pretty sure thatâs the intention, so here i go.
a huge part of deafness is barely-controlled rage. hearing people will talk to you while facing, mostly or entirely, in a completely different direction. they will mumble, and, when you canât hear, repeat themselves in that exact mumble. i mentioned this above, but they will joke amongst themselves and then claim that it would take far too long to repeat it.
most of them will do their best to be accommodating, and they can learn, but it is still incredibly frustrating to constantly remind them. if you take a character like post-redemption varian, who is already carrying a lot of anger/resentment, this concept comes with a final straw of sorts. everything that is infuriating him will come spilling out.
âhard of hearingâ equals âstill deafâ. having accommodations, like cochlear implants or hearing aids or whatever varian could invent, still makes you deaf. you are still disadvantaged when it comes to hearing. (this seems incredibly obvious, but ignorant people and/or ableist numbskulls will see an accommodation and declare you All Better.)
if varian is entirely deaf:
-cut out all description of sounds (of course), but fill in the gaps with his other senses. what does quirinâs voice feel like, rumbling in his chest as varian leans against him? how does rapunzelâs mouth move as she speaks?
-make others have to wave to get his attention.
-make him set up a flashing light to let him know when someone opens the door to his room/lab.
-make him miss words! lip-reading is not a superpower. words will sound similar, and every person will speak differently. he will miss things.
-when not lip-reading, and if others donât know any signed languages, he can communicate through writing.
if varian is lower on the deafness spectrum:
-give him headaches from straining to understand people who donât enunciate clearly.
-make him mishear things, most likely resulting in them laughing at him.
-make people have to say his name multiple times to get his attention.
-make him unaware that someone is walking up behind him, which would badly startle him (this goes for completely-deaf!varian, too).
-make him have to ask peopleâs names multiple times, and still not be sure he has the right one.
you donât have to check off every box on this list! you donât even have to use most of them if you have a different idea for the setting or plot. i just wanted to communicate a general idea, coming from someone who is fully deaf when i have my cochlear implants off.
last, but not least:
if youâre frightened about being offensive, think of it this way: the biggest problem about being deaf is that the world is constructed by hearing people.
donât treat varianâs deafness as a tragedy!
if an explosion gives him any degree of hearing loss, thatâs scary at first, but heâll adapt. if he was born with any degree of hearing loss, he knows how to navigate it.
if youâre incorporating a signed language into the fic, thatâs wonderful.
sign languages are beautiful. weâve got puns, weâve got mispronunciations, and weâve got so many words. spoken languages are not inherently superior.
yes, varianâs gonna miss things, but he also gets to easily tune annoyances out! maybe (if heâs fully deaf without accommodations), he doesnât speak ânormallyâ, but his loved ones take the time to learn the language he does speak. heâs extraordinary, and will have extraordinary accomplishments.
deaf!varian is still the same little guy we treasure.
Thank you so much for the advice! I was looking for it.
In the fanfiction I'm pretty sure I made Varian somewhere on the hard of hearing spectrum.
Thank you for all the things to add into the story!
This may take a while for me to start since I'm working on other things at the moment but hopefully in a month or two it will start.
Also big ask that you can reject and it is completely fine, but could you by any chance be my beta-reader for this, and if no that is absolutely okay!
iâm afraid i donât have time, but youâre already approaching this with the best possible mindset. people who are worried about being ableist are, usually, far less ableist in their writing than those that donât care.
please tag me when you post the end result! i think youâll do wonderfully :)
someone recently plagiarized about 98% of my âwell, thatâs one way to find outâ series.
(i politely persuaded them to delete it, so the only harm done is to me, the eighty-seven people who left kudos on the fic while it was up, and one person who called it âthe best fanfic [theyâve] ever readâ. i suppose i can take that compliment.)
now is as good a time as any to explain the difference between inspiration and plagiarism, in the hopes of alleviating some new writersâ nerves!
(you can also read the âwell, thatâs one way to find outâ oneshot series on my ao3, bismuth_titanium. i have it on good authority that itâs valuable, since at least one person has attempted to steal it! *nudge nudge, wink wink*)
inspiration:
-a snippet you canât stop thinking about. i read a fic where varian briefly contemplated running away to be a pirate, and i believe that was one of the early seeds of âher compassâ.
-a basic plot. âvarigo murder mysteryâ, âtangled: werewolf auâ, etc.
-a poetic sentence structure that makes you want to describe things more beautifully.
-an interpretation you had that didnât pan out the way you thought it would. âhey, i expected eugene to say something worse there⌠ooh, what if i wrote a fic where he says something heâll regret for the rest of his life? oh, ideas are coming! i need to start writing things down.â
these are not the only examples in the world, of course, but i hope you get the gist: inspiration is a diving board to a pool you fill.
plagiarism:
-an entire paragraph? snatch!
-scattered sentences that, if it were one or two, would be a coincidence, but is actually way more than that? yep, mine now!
-nearly every plot point, sometimes switched around to be in a slightly different order? donât mind if i do!
plagiarism is breaking into someone elseâs pool and splish-splashing around to your heartâs content.
if youâre worried that the fandom is going to find and pounce on you for writing about quirin and varianâs relationship, donât be. if youâre modeling everything off of âthe third amberâ by samurai_jill, stop it.
(and, by the way, you can write with friends! if you see a scene youâre inspired by, but know the end result would be too similar, start a private chat with a pal and enjoy. just donât post the end result.)

âher compassâ update tomorrow! read chapter eleven if you havenât, and prepare for some varigoâŚ
Do you have a favorite non-canon ship? Or is that too controversial to post?
well, seeing as that ship is varigo, i think iâm in the clear.
theyâre just so perfect, and so adaptable to any alternate universe you could want to place them in. want one to be a villainous figure? no problem, and they come with a propensity for redemption. want them both to be good? sure. want them to be pirates? theyâre intellectual equals who canât take their eyes off each other. they would do splendidly as pirates!
hey, whatâs this down here?

huh, that was weird.
anyway, i have recently been coming around to cassandra x lady caine! upon reflection, caine is not nearly as bad a person as the show makes her out to be (she committed less/about the same amount of crimes as varian, as a matter of fact), and she and cass could discuss a lot. it could be cute to see her giving cass a tattoo or something.
