the “emotionally intelligent lance strongbow” tag on ao3 is good, but i fear it’s primarily used for him to be emotional support to the main (white) characters.
i move to instate the “complete character lance strongbow” tag, where we work toward including reciprocity and some healthier relationships between lance and everybody else, along with giving lance far more development than the show afforded him.
It's been mentioned that season one was shown out of order to the way it was intended to be shown. Is there a reason why? Have you ever watched S1 in it proper narrative order and does it really change the feel of the story at all to view it in that way? Even with an overarching plot the show is episodic with relatively weak continuity. Does it change the character/story beats at all or do we get the same feel of the story and characters as we do when viewed in airing order vs. narrative order?
I don't know why that happened, but I can say that the biggest difference it makes to me is Lance's arc within Corona itself. When you watch the episodes in order, his relationship to everyone else makes way more sense, instead of being all over the place. If watched in production order, then:
"The Return of Strongbow" - Lance shows up out of the blue and is introduced to Rapunzel and Cassandra. By the end of the episode, he’s on thin ice with both of them (though his confession to being behind the ring fiasco softens Rapunzel to him a little). He leaves the palace by the end of the episode, and donates most of the Baron's stolen goods to charity.
"Queen For a Day" - Lance is bumming around the castle, calling for kitchen raids and stealing Frederic’s clothes (boots and hat) when he’s not around/looking. He goes with Eugene to help rescue Frederic and Arianna. Frederic doesn’t know his name and barely recognizes him.
"Painter's Block" - Lance is now comfortable chilling in Rapunzel’s room with Eugene and Cassandra. He sits on the arm of a chair that Cassandra is presently sitting in, and she doesn’t seem to mind. He also attends the painting class with Rapunzel (and none of the other regulars around).
"Pascal's Story" - Lance is now comfortable roaming around the castle by himself, without supervision or being stopped by the guards. In fact, he’s comfortable enough that he found Pascal alone with a huge feast of a dinner, trapped Pascal, and ate it all himself. During the end credits, Pascal is making him do the dishes.
"Big Brothers of Corona" - Eugene is trying to get Lance a job with the guard. He helps with training the guards, then gets assigned to help reform Kiera and Catalina. Frederic is aware of this, and seems to at least not disapprove of it.
"Max's Enemy" - A bit part in this episode, he’s still trusted enough by the Captain to take a current criminal into custody.
"The Way of the Willow" - Lance gives Arianna a birthday present and the nickname “Mrs. Queen.” (This is the first and only real interaction with Arianna he has in the series.) This means that he was either invited to her familial birthday celebration or he just heard about it from Eugene and Rapunzel and invited himself. But if the latter is the case, he was thoughtful enough to bring a present for her! (Even if he wasn’t thoughtful enough to not ask to borrow it back immediately afterward.) Frederic wants to go camping with Lance and Eugene as one of the guys. Lance feels comfortable inviting him, which means hanging out with him all night. Also, and this is important, Pascal now likes him enough to perch on his shoulder. (You can actually see a character’s acceptance in the group by whether or not Pascal is willing to sit on them.)
"The Secret of the Sundrop" - Lance is willing to join the dangerous fight against Varian to save Arianna.
So you can see that there is a continuity that's lost when watched in airing order rather than production order. It's not a major continuity, since the major S1 plot focuses around the rocks and Varian's relationship to them, but I remember being confused as to why Lance's relationship with everyone was bouncing back and forth so much.
i love that Lance respected Angry wanting to still go by Angry instead of Kiera
Really, the only person in the series (that I recall) who calls her Kiera is Catalina.
Also, she never canonically says she prefers to be called Angry. While I did reblog that fanart, I 100% headcanon that she doesn't give a fuck what people call her.
I, for one, use both names in my tags for her, because that way I can find any posts about her, whichever name I choose to use in my search terms. (Also "Angry" is such a generic word. This series has forced me to have tags like "angry," "red," "owl," "pocket" and "otter.")
No, what I love about Lance re: those girls' names is how he pronounces Catalina with a Spanish accent.

On years like this year, when Rapunzel shares her birthday with Father's Day, the friend group has a huger-than-usual celebration. Rapunzel and Lance each bake for the other one, and decorate a lantern for the other one for later in the evening. The party decorations are in both their favorite colors.
Gothel never made a big to do out of Rapunzel's birthday, so even though she personally has, and her parents obviously do, she also doesn't mind sharing it with Lance. Lance doesn't even know (or particularly care) when his birthday is, so he's over-the-moon touched that Rapunzel acknowledges him as a father figure, even if it's not to her.
They both love sharing their special day with the other one.

In the dead of night with only the moon as his witness, the once mighty King of Lunaris made a decision in efforts to rectify the very mistake that had revoked his title and branded him the King of Darkness, but even an action made out of love can become cruel and unkind.
A widowed handmaiden was sworn to secrecy and given orders to raise the twin heirs in a kingdom far away but the twins were soon separated by the cruelty of the world, the other being long forgotten.
Fate happens to work in funny ways though, even when their lives had been as different as night is to day.
{A 'What if Eugene and Cassandra were twins?" AU that begins with a rewritten season 1 finale—I could not, in my right mind, leave Varian behind—and dives into seasons 2 and 3 from there}

Hey can you please help me clear up the Stallion and Eugene dating time line cause I don’t understand it they were dating since they were teenagers, but it was also stated that Eugene girls they were also engaged to each other so I don’t get it. So is there like a head canon somewhere that explains it or what
It's honestly not entirely clean in canon, either, because Eugene's entire history wasn't mapped out from the start, but here's what we have for sure.
In "No Time Like the Past," when Eugene was 15, he was definitely into Stalyan, plus it seemed like they were dating, since he intends to take her out on a really fancy date with the profits they'll get from selling the Faberge egg (though that could admittedly be wishful thinking on his part, but I think the implication was intended to be that they were dating at that point).
The prologue at the beginning of "The Return of Strongbow" takes place eight years before the present. In the present, Eugene is 24 (though he thinks he's 23 at that point), which would make him 16 in the prologue. (Ignore the fact that it's his adult model with a different doublet on. It was cheaper to recolor a model they already had than design a whole new-looking character for such a short amount of screentime. They didn't know when that episode was written that they were eventually going to be writing "No Time Like the Past.") So, about a year after the events of "No Time Like the Past." At that point, it seems like they've paid off their debt to the Baron (or so they think), but are still willing to work with him at odd jobs. The Baron ordered Weasel to take all the loot from the job, thus leading Lance to want to rob him, eight years later, as revenge for that stolen loot.
In "Big Brothers of Corona," Eugene says that they once double-crossed the Baron, and Lance adds that it didn't help that Eugene stole his prized Stalyan. (Though, at the time the episode was written, it was just 'stallion,' ie, just a horse. It wasn't until later that they decided that Eugene used to be engaged to the Baron's daughter, and that her name was Stalyan as a callback to that line.) Eugene also mentions that the Baron has been hunting them since they double-crossed him, which implies that it's Eugene leaving Stalyan at the alter that counts as the double-cross. The events in the prologue of BBoC seem to happen before the double-cross, since they're working with the Baron's men and aren't actively being hunted by them.
Now, I'd like to point out that, up until answering this very ask, the numbers have seemed to imply to me that Eugene and Stalyan got engaged when they were teenagers, and that he was going to marry her when he was 16, but chickened out (for good reason), but now that I'm writing it all out like this, it occurs to me that things are kind of nebulous. If the prologue of TRoS wasn't a result of the double-cross that Eugene is talking about in BBoC, if that happened later, then we have a good seven years unaccounted for (the time between the job where Weasel took all the loot they were supposed to split and the Baron hiring Eugene to steal Rapunzel's crown, which was mentioned in "Flynnposter"). We know Lance was there for the whole Stalyan thing, and that he'd been in jail for a good chunk of the time between the movie and TRoS (Cassandra asks him where he's been all this time, and he admits it's been mostly prison). However, we don't know when exactly he was arrested, or how many times, though the events of NTLtP imply that he got caught at some point, and that was when Eugene left him behind. (Not necessarily the arrest that happened in NTLtP, though, since Lance was there for the Baron double-cross.) I'd also like to point out that, when he was 15, Eugene was already intensely selfish. He'd stolen two Faberge eggs and told Lance there was only one, so that he could keep the profits from the second one for himself. There's no telling when he ditched Lance, and for what reason.
The problem we are running into, as stated at the top, is that Eugene's past wasn't mapped out on a timeline. They made up the events as they went along. The only thing they knew for sure at the beginning of the series was that Eugene was a lost prince, and that he and Lance grew up in the orphanage together, and later went on to become thieves together.
