Hi there! I hope this is okay to ask, and feel free to ignore if not, but do you have any book recommendations I could give to my 16 year old sister about either feminism or gender non conformity from a christian perspective?
I'm not christian but she is, and the way she acts to both others and herself makes me quite sad for her, her dad is pretty bigoted and I don't want her to follow in his footsteps. I'd love to introduce her to other views about God that aren't what she's being taught at school and at home, because I feel like she's kind deep down but she's started making small comments that worry me.
No worries if you don't have any ideas, or if it's not you area of expertise! I don't follow you and I've only had a quick look at your blog so I won't be offended if this is out of line. Thank you regardless!
Hey, sorry for the delay! I have a few ideas, and I imagine followers will be able to add on some more books on feminism and/or gender from a Christian perspective.
I think any book by Rachel Held Evans or Barbara Brown Taylor could be a good, gentle entrance into a more justice-oriented form of faith. Neither are like, specifically about gender or feminism, and both authors are cishet women — but that might make it easier to convince your sister to try them out.
Held Evans' book Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again is an excellent, accessible text that reframes scripture to include thoughtful, historically contextual understandings; here are some excerpts.
.
Or there's her memoir Evolving in Monkey Town: How a Girl Who Knew All the Answers Learned to Ask the Questions
.
Learning to Walk in the Dark is my favorite Barbara Brown Taylor book; it describes the "full solar" theologies of many Christians and offers a "lunar" theology as a remedy to that kind of toxic positivity and "if you're suffering your just not praying hard enough" mindset
Then there are books that are more explicitly "feminism" or "gender":
Nadia Bolz-Weber's Shameless: A Sexual Revolution, which unpacks purity culture and invites the reader into the good news that God created our bodies and calls them good
.
Wil Gafney's Womanist Midrash reimagines various women of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) in gorgeous ways
.
Austen Hartke's book Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians is my go-to rec for a very accessible introduction into trans theology, with lots of anecdotes from a variety of trans Christians
Followers, any other recs?
