I just wanna ramble about how nenes hair clips have a bit of cool symbolism in recent chapters (up till 126)
Throughout the story, it's incredibly rare nenes seen without her famous hair clips - it's such an important part of her that even when massively simplified down it's still prominent.
They're even used to convey her emotions, such as separating from her when she's shocked, and turning into horns when she's angry
I'm pretty sure the only time we've seen her without them is when she's sleeping or has just woken up
The hairclips are shaped like magatamas, which traditionally represent good fortune and the avoidance of evil:
Now I wouldn't exactly call Nene an incredibly fortunate girl, but throughout most of the story before the new timeline, she's always had people to rely on as she navigates the supernatural world she's been thrust into. Mainly in the form of hanako and kou, but also others like teru and akane
However, in chapters 120 and 121, this completely shifts
One of nenes magatamas falling off after her altercation with amane, which is great subtle foreshadowing of what happens almost immediately after
Kou dies. Mitsuba dies. Teru, akane and aoi probably die. The clip falling off represents nenes luck disappearing cos now she's on her own with no one to help her. Not even her beloved hanako kun.
Now, only with her sheer determination, she proceeds alone...
(I also just wanna say how much I love one- hair-clip nene she looks so badass with that slightly asymmetrical design! I kinda wish it was kept throughout this arc but it wouldn't really make sense plot wise)
When Nene uses the hourglass to rewind to the past and attempt to fix things, her other hair clip returns
Maybe the luck she lost has come back. Maybe she can finally fix things.
It's almost like we're being lulled into a false sense of security that things will be right again, even though the terrible consequences of the hourglass were just shown to us
And that's incredibly ironic. For even with both hair clips intact, her good fortune seemingly returning, it's here that the most horrific part of the manga happens
Despite the magatamas being a symbol of an avoidance of evil, she succumbs to this evil instead, by becoming the cause of her friends demise.
