Europe's right-to-repair movement is surging -- and winning
Earlier this month, European right-to-repair activists sounded the alarm, warning that the model right-to-repair legislation that had been proceeding through the EU legislative process had been hijacked by lobbyists who had gutted its core protections and were poised to make repairs even harder in the EU.
But Europeans rallied, and now they seem to have the upper hand. Pressure groups like Germanyâs Schraube locker!? (Screwloose!?) have organised mass write-in campaigns and other ways of lobbying EU officials, to good effect. This week, they scored a victory over refrigerator design, securing an amendment to the EUâs pending Eco Design and Energy Label Directives (where the right-to-repair rules are enshrined) that will require refrigerator manufacturers to design their appliances to be repairable with everyday tools, and to supply their customers with spare parts and manuals so they can keep their property in good working order.
It could be a model for many kinds of devices, a return to the Maker Manifestoâs call for âscrews not glueâ and âuser-replaceable parts.â
At the vanguard of the movement are people from ex-Soviet states, where deprivation was the mother of innovation, so that thrifty, ingenious home repairs were the key to human thriving. This ethic is also key today, if we are to reduce our material consumption, carbon footprint, and complicity in the human rights abuses committed in the name of securing the conflict minerals in our devices.

Free worldbuilding idea:
Wizards have the same trust in magic that software designers have in software, which is to say, almost none at all.
âAre you fucking kidding me I worked in a reagrent shop for a few years I donât trust any of that stuff. Who the hell knows what other components are in the ashes.â
âYeah I was in the circle that made Alstonâs Divine Circle of Teleportation. Thereâs some pretty nasty corner cases you can get into but the headmaster published it without us. I just take ships. Itâs way safer.â
âI call bullshit on that Necromancer channeling spirits of loved ones. What did he say he was using? âMedium Conduit Ruinic Circlesâ? Thatâs just a bunch of buzzwords slapped together, and they donât even interact with each other.â
âIâve been looking at this scroll all morning and Iâm 90% sure that the scribe didnât even look at the standard for pyromancies.â
âHelp Desk, this is Gloriline, what did you fuck up this time?â *indistinct vocals* âDave, Iâve seen the news, and, frankly, I can see the ash cloud from here. You paid for extended support, not enabling support.â
âI canât get this fucking spell to work, Jane, can you look it?â
*passes a scroll* *a few moments of silence*
âI think you missed a bookend rune right here-â
âGODS DAMN IT! ITâS ALWAYS SHIT LIKE THAT! THANK YOU!â *angrily scribbles on parchment*
(It takes five more aggravatingly tiny adjustments before the spell works)
I donât play wizards anymore because theyâre too much like my day job.
Instead of a orb the wizard has a little statue of a duck he tells his spells to and then swears when he spots the obvious mistake.
You beat me to it! I was going to add that the reason why wizards and witches always have familiars around is so they can Rubber Duck at them until they realize what the mistake with their spell is!
Outsiders get it wrong and figure the familiars are somehow teaching spells to their owners, but no. Itâs just explaining to Firewing what youâre trying to do with this teleportation matrix until you realize that youâve been using telepathy crystals to power it the whole time like a FUCKING IDIOT!

REBLOG IF NAZIS OFFEND YOU MORE THAN NIPPLES.
I think the real problem here is that big media corporations seem to believe that social media userbases are fungible, and persist in acting on this belief no matter how many times itâs demonstrated to be wrong.
Thereâs a specific pattern of events that plays out over and over (and over) again, and it looks something like this:
1. Social media platform becomes popular
2. Social media platform is purchased by big media corporation in order to gain access to it large user base
3. Big media corporation realises that social media platformâs demographics are not the demographics they want to sell things to.
4. Big media corporation institutes measures to drive away âundesirableâ users, apparently in the honest belief that the outgoing users will automatically be replaced by an equal number of new, more demographically desirable users
5. This does not, in fact, occur
6. Social media platform crashes and burns
Youâd think that, by the sheer law of averages, at least one person whoâs capable of learning from experience would become involved in this whole process at some point.

@kazoo-goddess , you have a new challenge.
Youâre on!
In 2019 we grow from sex positivity to sex responsibility, meaning we:
call out shitty people who are just abusers and using kink/polyamory to mask it and stop supporting them
recognize that sometimes hypersexuality can be a form a self-harm for some people
keep kinks and fetishes in appropriate spaces and not bringing them out into general public spaces and thereby involving people in scenes they arenât consenting toÂ
understand that some fetishes are inherently unhealthy and some illegal to actually engage in for good reason and ignoring that is irresponsible at best
Keep in mind that even seemingly innocent kinks can be the expression of deeper issues. As important as it is to understand HOW to participate in a kink, its equally important to understand WHY it interests you.
Hey @mistresskabooms do you think something like this would work for us?

Please make a post about the story of the RMS Carpathia, because it's something that's almost beyond belief and more people should know about it.
Carpathia received Titanicâs distress signal at 12:20am, April 15th, 1912. She was 58 miles away, a distance that absolutely could not be covered in less than four hours.
(Californianâs exact position at the time isâŚcontroversial. She was close enough to have helped. By all accounts she was close enough to see Titanicâs distress rockets. Itâs uncertain to this day why her crew did not respond, or how many might not have been lost if she had been there. This is not the place for what-ifs. This is about what was done.)
Carpathiaâs Captain Rostron had, yes, rolled out of bed instantly when woken by his radio operator, ordered his ship to Titanicâs aid and confirmed the signal before he was fully dressed. The man had never in his life responded to an emergency call. His goal tonight was to make sure nobody who heard that fact would ever believe it.
All of Carpathiaâs lifeboats were swung out ready for deployment. Oil was set up to be poured off the side of the ship in case the sea turned choppy; oil would coat and calm the water near Carpathia if that happened, making it safer for lifeboats to draw up alongside her. He ordered lights to be rigged along the side of the ship so survivors could see it better, and had nets and ladders rigged along her sides ready to be dropped when they arrived, in order to let as many survivors as possible climb aboard at once.
I donât know if his making provisions for there still being survivors in the water was optimism or not. I think he knew they were never going to get there in time for that. I think he did it anyway because, god, you have to hope.
Carpathia had three dining rooms, which were immediately converted into triage and first aid stations. Each had a doctor assigned to it. Hot soup, coffee, and tea were prepared in bulk in each dining room, and blankets and warm clothes were collected to be ready to hand out. By this time, many of the passengers were awakeâprepping a ship for disaster relief isnât quietâand all of them stepped up to help, many donating their own clothes and blankets.
And then he did something I tend to refer to as diverting all power from life support.
Hereâs the thing about steamships: They run on steam. Shocking, I know; but that steam powers everything on the ship, and right now, Carpathia needed power. So Rostron turned off hot water and central heating, which bled valuable steam power, to everywhere but the dining roomsâwhich, of course, were being used to make hot drinks and receive survivors. He woke up all the engineers, all the stokers and firemen, diverted all that steam back into the engines, and asked his ship to go as fast as she possibly could. And when sheâd done that, he asked her to go faster.
I need you to understand that you simply canât push a ship very far past its top speed. Pushing that much sheer tonnage through the water becomes harder with each extra knot past the speed it was designed for. Pushing a ship past its rated speed is not only recklessâitâs difficult to maneuverâbut it puts an incredible amount of strain on the engines. Ships are not designed to exceed their top speed by even one knot. They canât do it. It canât be done.
Carpathiaâs absolute do-or-die, the-engines-canât-take-this-forever top speed was fourteen knots. Dodging icebergs, in the dark and the cold, surrounded by mist, she sustained a speed of almost seventeen and a half.
No one would have asked this of them. It wasnât expected. They were almost sixty miles away, with icebergs in their path. They had a responsibility to respond; they did not have a responsibility to do the impossible and do it well. No one would have faulted them for taking more time to confirm the severity of the issue. No one would have blamed them for a slow and cautious approach. No one but themselves.
They damn near broke the laws of physics, galloping north headlong into the dark in the desperate hope that if they could shave an hour, half an hour, five minutes off their arrival time, maybe for one more person those five minutes would make the difference. I say: three people had died by the time they were lifted from the lifeboats. For all we know, in another hour it might have been more. I say they made all the difference in the world.
This ship and her crew received a message from a location they could not hope to reach in under four hours. Just barely over three hours later, they arrived at Titanicâs last known coordinates. Half an hour after that, at 4am, they would finally find the first of the lifeboats. it would take until 8:30 in the morning for the last survivor to be brought onboard. Passengers from Carpathia universally gave up their berths, staterooms, and clothing to the survivors, assisting the crew at every turn and sitting with the sobbing rescuees to offer whatever comfort they could.
In total, 705 people of Titanicâs original 2208 were brought onto Carpathia alive. No other ship would find survivors.
At 12:20am April 15th, 1912, there was a miracle on the North Atlantic. And it happened because a group of humans, some of them strangers, many of them only passengers on a small and unimpressive steam liner, looked at each other and decided: I cannot live with myself if I do anything less.
I think the least we can do is remember them for it.
Disability benefits should be the equivalent of a full time job on living wage. Things donât cost less because youâre disabled - in fact you often have additional costs of living. You shouldnât be forced into poverty because you are disabled.
Before anyone comes in with â but then ppl would lie so they didnât have to work!â
Two responses
Universal basic income + better wages is the way forward
Who fucking cares? Not me. This insistence that ppl lie to get benefits and as a result benefits should be a fucking pittance that itâs humiliating to apply for just fucks over disabled people and is inhumane
Added to this:Â
No retesting of permanent disabilities.Â
It is huge stress for people with autism or lost limbs or so forth to be retested, especially when theyâre often denied - every two years or less - their benefits and forced to appeal and then get back what they originally had (or less) ⌠itâs weeks without income, which has sent many people homeless or forced them into short-term loans and debt they canât escape. Itâs barbaric.Â
Also, payments made during appeal - if they donât deserve the cash, they can repay over time, but if they do then youâve stopped them from going into debt and/or being made homeless. The whole system needs a huge overhaul, especially with the assessors being paid per person chucked off the system.Â
Itâs absolutely dehumanising to say the least.Â
And no more marriage/cohabitation policies so that people whose only source of income is those benefits can use them to contribute to a partnership instead of having them yanked away on the grounds that âyour spouse can support you now.â
Make basic living income a thing.
