just really sad seeing another transmasc artist fall into the transandrophobia pipeline as well as imply some really terfy shit ( sex based oppression/"how society treats afabs" ignoring how it treats transfems ) so just a reminder:
"transandrophobia" is not harmful because acknowledging transmasc oppression is bad. "transandrophobia" is harmful because it pins - and was coined with the intent to pin - the blame for transmasc oppression on a unique prejudice of masculinity which does not systemically exist and thus discussions in its name completely miss the systemic transphobia we go through and why it happens, not to mention the transmisogyny at the root of the movement which is why so much of its theory cites sex-based oppression and assumes facing misogyny is a matter of being cafab vs camab.
of course we're erased and marginalized. but the word for men's transphobia in a male-dominated society is transphobia. and for god's sakes don't call women's transphobia men's transphobia.
This is something that’s made me look at the term a bit differently, thank you!
In most of the discussion I’ve had around the concept it’s been pinned as a word to describe the malgendering of trans men within and outside of the trans community itself, which honestly is a constant that most trans men experience. Especially within the spaces that focus so heavily on who is “TMA” and who is “TME”, because it often comes along with the concept that when trans men transition they no longer experience misogyny as a whole (despite the fact that a lot of transmisogyny is still faced twords trans men, even if it’s a misplaced hate.)
I’ve already seen some discussion around the TMA/TME concept going into how TMA is a wonderful term to describe the transfem experience, but enforcing the concept that people have to be one or the other is restating the gender/sex binary in a way that creates a divide in the community- the same divide that started the whole tranandrophobia pipeline.
I’m wondering if there’s a better overarching term we can use to describe the experience that is sucking people into this pipeline. Malgendering/Dismissal of trans men’s experiences/Misplaced TM/Overall Misogyny/etc.
There is a unique oppression trans men face that does need to be spoken about, but I haven’t seen a term for it or real space to speak about it outside of transandrophobia. By finding another term and community, we can nip this whole concept in the bud.
