Brand New Blog!
Hi LARP Foodies! I wanted to put in an introduction post as to why Iām making this blog. The LARP that I play has grown so exponentially that the people who do the meal plans for game are struggling to bring and cook enough food for the high volume of people at the game. Add to that, Iāve been trying to eat healthier and smarter this year, and I wanted to make sure that I could account for those things Iām eating, and keep myself on track even when I go to game. Though thereās a hundred blogs and websites that talk about eating camp food, LARP camping poses some significant challenges that may make normal camping food a little less feasible. To my way of thinking, the challenges are that your time may be limited -- if your LARP does not stop combat for food times, you may not have a lot of time to prep, cook, eat and clean up your food before you have to get back to it. So prep needs to be minimized, and cleaning needs to be something you can focus on at your leisure. Additionally, many sites do not permit full fires -- meaning youāre down to only a camp stove and/or limited electricity. All of the recipes on this site will be designed to minimize the hardware you need, and minimize the cleanup to that hardware on site. Immersion is also a concern for many LARP runners, and photographers! I want to make sure any meal you have with you will photograph well! The meals wonāt read as super modern or be served in simple tupperware. Last but not least, space is often at a premium for LARPers -- especially if theyāre driving together. I donāt want you to have to pack a full camp kitchen in order to eat at game! In most cases a cooler and some way to get hot water will be all you need, though some recipes may also require a camp stove. Iām planning to meal prep 1600 calories a day and the recipes I offer will be designed or selected with that in mind. That number allows me a good window for coffee, snacks provided by friends, and other foods available on site. I estimate that I need anywhere from 2000 - 2500 calories per day. Your calorie needs may vary depending on how physically demanding your LARP is, and your own preferences of caloric intake. The tags on each post will note what hardware you will need, and the level of difficulty for the preparation off site, and on site. Assume you will always need a cooler, though you wonāt need a big one if youāre prepping just for yourself. As I generate tags, Iāll make more posts like this to explain what the tags mean. Iāll include recipes (and credit where necessary when Iām taking from other sites) and my impressions of eating those recipes once I get a chance to take them to game and test them there. The tags for this post (and future posts) will be: #ZeroCalorie -- any post thatās informative, but doesnāt include a recipe or dish. #NoStoveNoProblem -- any recipe that doesnāt require you to have a camp stove. #NoIceNoProblem -- any recipe that doesnāt require a cooler. #MasonJarCooking -- any recipe stored and served in a mason jar. #ImmersionWare -- how to make any hardware recommendations immersion friendly! Iāve opened up questions on this blog -- feel free to shoot me any questions you have!

The Natural Sweet Revolution: Inside China's Steviol Glycosides Market
The global shift away from refined sugar has created one of the most significant transformations in food history. Consumers demand sweetness without consequencesāzero calories, natural origins, and clean labels. At the center of this revolution stands stevia, specifically the compounds that make it sweet: steviol glycosides. For manufacturers and formulators seeking to capitalize on this trend, understanding China's sophisticated supply chain for total steviol glycosides from Stevia rebaudiana extract is essential knowledge.
Understanding Steviol Glycosides
Steviol glycosides are the sweet components found in the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana, a plant native to the rainforests of Paraguay and Brazil that has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples to sweeten beveragesĀ . These compoundsāprimarily stevioside and rebaudiosidesāshare a common steviol backbone but differ in their sugar attachments, creating distinct sweetness profiles and intensities.
What makes steviol glycosides remarkable is their potency. Depending on the specific glycoside composition and purity level, these extracts deliver sweetness 150 to 450 times greater than sucroseĀ . A compound like Rebaudioside A (Reb-A), considered the best component in stevia extracts for its clean taste, achieves this intensity while contributing virtually no caloriesĀ .
The chemistry is precise. Steviol glycosides have the molecular formula C38H60O18, appear as white to light yellow powder, and demonstrate stability across wide temperature and pH rangesāproperties that make them exceptionally versatile for food manufacturingĀ .
China's Dominance in Global Stevia Production
China has emerged as the undisputed leader in stevia cultivation and processing. Today, more than 90% of the world's stevia is grown in ChinaĀ . This dominance stems from favorable growing conditions, established agricultural expertise, and massive investment in extraction infrastructure.
The concentration of production capacity is staggering. Individual suppliers like Hangzhou Food Ingredients Cloud report monthly production capacity reaching 1,000 tonsĀ . Kingherbs Limited in Hunan province maintains 50,000 kilograms per month capacity, operating as an audited supplier since 2007Ā . This scale enables Chinese manufacturers to serve global demand with consistency and competitive pricing.
Major production clusters have formed across several provinces. Shandong province hosts numerous certified facilities including Tangbaobao Biotechnology's FSSC22000-certified operations, Weifang Tinmu Chemical, and Jining USP InternationalĀ . Hunan province contributes established players like KingherbsĀ . Shandong's concentration of stevia processing expertise has created a competitive environment benefiting buyers through multiple sourcing options.

Quality Parameters and Testing
Professional buyers evaluate steviol glycosides against comprehensive quality specifications that extend beyond simple purity percentages.
Physical and Chemical Properties provide initial quality indicators. Products should appear as white to light yellow powder with characteristic sweet taste and no off-odors . Loss on drying typically falls below 4-6%, ash content under 0.1-1%, and pH in 1% solution between 4.5-7.0 depending on specific product . Specific optical rotation between -30° and -38° confirms proper stereochemistry .
Purity VerificationĀ requires analytical rigor. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) provides definitive quantification of individual glycosides and total contentĀ . Reputable suppliers provide Certificates of Analysis documenting stevioside, rebaudioside A, and other glycoside proportions alongside total steviol glycosides.
Heavy Metal and Safety TestingĀ ensures consumer safety. Responsible manufacturers maintain strict limits: lead ā¤1 ppm, arsenic ā¤1 ppm, cadmium ā¤1 ppm, mercury ā¤1 ppmĀ . Solvent residues fall within permissible rangesāmethanol ā¤200 ppm, ethanol ā¤5000 ppmĀ .
Microbiological PurityĀ confirms suitability for food applications. Specifications require total plate count ā¤1000 CFU/g, negative for pathogens including Salmonella, E. coli, and Staphylococcus, and yeast/mold within acceptable limitsĀ .
Certifications and Compliance
Leading Chinese stevia suppliers maintain comprehensive certifications enabling global distribution. ISO9001 for quality management and FSSC22000 or ISO22000 for food safety appear standard among established manufacturersĀ . Jining USP International exemplifies this commitment with ISO9001, FSSC22000, Kosher, and Halal certificationsĀ .
For specific markets, additional credentials matter. Kosher and Halal certifications expand accessibility to religious dietary marketsĀ . Organic certifications (USDA, EU) appeal to premium segments. JECFA compliance ensures acceptance in regulated markets worldwideĀ .
