What? According to psychiatrist Carl Jung, the shadow is the part the “darker side” to your personality, the part of you that you wish other’s not to see. Everyone has a shadow, though they may refer to it as a different name. It may be parts of your personality that you don’t like or wish were different.

How? Shadow work involves self reflection in order to identify the parts of your personality or self that you struggle with. It can be done by free journaling, using journal prompts like the one featured above and even can be done in therapy with a counselor.

Why? By acknowledging your shadow it can help you better understand yourself as a person. It can help you highlight your strengths, identify areas of opportunity and become more in touch with your intuition. For some, shadow work can also help address trauma experienced during childhood.
