When I was first diagnosed with a chronic illness, I left little room for internal kindness and focused all of my time and energy on others – almost as if I was trying to prove how strong and unfazed I was by my “new normal.”

But I slowly learned that to be kind is not to chase an unattainable luxury. It's not something that you can put on the back burner for long periods of time. Kindness to ourselves – to every part of us – is an instrumental mechanism to becoming a better and fuller person. When we treat our bodies, thoughts and feelings just like we would a struggling stranger, we make a statement about what it means to prioritize our own worth so that we can show others just how much they matter, too.

Your kindness challenge today: Do one kind thing for yourself. Go ahead and spend a minute (or two) figuring what you really need, what'll make you lighter right in this very moment. Celebrate a small win, show yourself forgiveness or write yourself a love letter. You're worth it.
