Rey literally was forced to become the punching bag of the alt right. Well organized hate-campaigns that used her image affected real life mainstream US politics. What happened in 2015 and 2016 with rey was the natural evolution of gamergate, except larger and with infinitely more reach. The same men that organized the largest hate-campaigns against her soon became huge players in getting trump elected and then profiting afterwards off of that notoriety. Rey was made into an example for rallying backlash against feminist thought, just because she dared to be a female protagonist in a franchise that men felt wrongly possessive over.

The misogyny Katara faced and faces very much is a reflection of broader society. But the hatred towards Rey from misogynists went a step further and was used to exacerbate irl misogyny. My vote has to go to the character that was so thoroughly lambasted by misogynists that her haters impacted modern politics. Rey deserved better. Any woman or girl who had to hear the mainstream hatred levvied against Rey in 2016 deserved better.
