Some thoughts from still occupied Minnesota.
1. It will not be an organization that holds the line, people using their voice, their bodies will. You must shift mindset now to "what can I and my trusted friends family and neighbors do". Large companies, nonprofits, foundations will not save you. The idea of paid protesters is so laughable because of how badly and slowly most organizations are.
Most organizations and corporations are slow, cowardly and weak willed. The exception here is some local small businesses, local unions, neighborhood nonprofits, churches, mosques and synagogues showed incredible tenacity and ground level support. Their experience with logistics can make them powerful local mutual aid hubs.
2. Your local politicians will say big powerful words and use the spotlight to further themselves while doing fuck all. At best they will apply judicial pressure on DHS and at worst they will use police to collude with DHS. Overwhelm their inboxes, fill up their voicemail, make sure they know across the political spectrum how immoral the actions of DHS are.
3. Get your mind and body ready to act and act quickly. Show up to constitutional observer trainings (remote or in-person). Read about and tap into local mutual aid networks. Get a whistle. Most abductions take minutes.
4. Your mind will tell you "DHS agents needs to follow the law, the constitution and the bill of rights" you must quickly rid yourself of that notion. They should follow the law, but they do not and will not be held accountable. DHS agents have been fed lies about absolute immunity for years, and are now just more empowered under this administration. DHS agents will lie, they will harass and intimidate, they will assault and kill people all while wearing masks to "protect their identity. " Citizenship status means nothing to them. It will be strange the first time you hear or see a Hispanic DHS agents harass someone for papers with a heavy accent.
However, DHS and ICE agents hate though being filmed, they hate large crowds, they hate being yelled at, cussed out, they hate the whistles, they hate those using constitutional right to observe and to film. There is strength in the bravery of many showing up quickly.
5. Moderate democrats will tell you that ICE agents are behaving poorly because of recent training, this is a lie. The agents that killed Renee Good, and Alex Pretty had years of experience. Good's killer trained other officers from his "years of experience. " They manufactured those moments so they could murder them and claim self-defense. An internal ICE audit from years ago shows ICE agents frequently engaging in a "kill box" tactic where they surround a vehicle or person, give loud and conflicting orders and confuse the target until the DHS agents can get an excuse to assault or kill the person. They've used this excuse in Minnesota, Chicago and across the country.
6. Keep your phone charged always.
7. Turn off face id and fingerprint unlock on your phone. DHS agents can force you to unlock a phone with biometrics, they can't force you to give up a pass code.
8. Get a paper map of your neighborhood. Get used to operating in airplane mode or off when delivering food aid.
9. If you show up to protest, or do constitutional observation with your car consider it compromised for mutual aid delivery. DHS agents track the cars of constitutional observers trailing DHS and protesters. They know those cars are involved in anti-ICE work, do not let them trail you to your immigrant neighbors homes.
If you have multiple cars in your household pick which is for antagonistic action and the other for mutual aid actions. Do not mix them.
10. Get yourself familiar with Signal, WhatsApp and how to delete text messages, and recent locations for your maps app. ICE and DHS agents will try to and succeed to infiltrate anything too public.
11. ICE and DHS will use ruses to try and blend in. They change their license plates daily, they'll send in DHS agitators to protests, they will scope out restaurants and eat their before a raid. White supremacist groups and individuals have tried to antagonize crowds using DHS agents as their protection. Resist them anyway.
12. Don't try to do everything in the resistance. Pick one to three things and do those well and often.
Example: I try to do constitutional observation for my neighborhood, protest and disrupt often, do grocery delivery (in a totally unrelated vehicle from not my household). Others are "commuters", do logistics for mutual aid, screen printing, train others on rights, or provide safe haven outside ICE detention facilities (ICE will often release people without a phone, jacket into the freezing winter night).
13. Your community will not be united. We in Minnesota have spineless residents who lick the boots of the federal agents, who think the first amendment means a strongly worded letter but not putting your body on the line in the street. The 2nd amendment blowhards will be silent on this oppressive actions. They do not care that our immigration and asylum systems are impossible to navigate and have needed desperately reform for years (under both parties). People deserve dignity, wherever they are from.
What DHS/ICE agents are doing is testing for this administration where they can be a federal occupying force. The goal is intimidation, harassment and divisiveness. Which communities comply with the feds even through illegal and immoral actions are taking place. You must collectively resist.
You cannot rely on the information to resist to be spoon fed to you. There will not be an itinerary for resistance. There is no handbook, that handbook would just give away all your tactics. You and your neighbors must show initiative, creativity, courage and moral conviction. Be brave, stand strong together.
Migration is a natural right of living beings. The birds see no borders when they fly overhead.
