Recently on a trip to London I saw a team of arborists pollarding a row of Platanus x hispanica (London plane). This is normally done every few years to accommodate the trees in the confined city streets and to rejuvenate them. The pruning process creates these characteristic branch shapes with āknucklesā at the end where new shoots will emerge next spring.

Whatās not to love about street trees? They give shade, capture carbon, and make streets look nice. But they have caused plenty of controversy. https://thisispaper.com/Urban-Omnibus-The-Truth-About-Trees Source: Urban Omnibus Photo: Erwan Fichou

A small, spring flowering cherry tree, a Prunus cultivar, was brightening this formal landscape on the streets of Cambridge, UK. It had obviously already attracted some admirers who had left a small message! It was great to know others thought it was a beautiful addition to the city.

In the streets, gardens and the Cathedral of Seville, Spain, the popular evergreen tree is Citrus aurantium (bitter orange, Seville orange, marmalade orange). The trees flower in March and early April which must be a wonderful sight and scent. The City does employ firms to collect the fruit to make various products including marmalade. The Writtle University College postgraduate students and staff certainly interacted with the trees and fruit of this wonderful place!

A dramatically pruned double avenue of Ginkgo biloba (maidenhair tree) in central Tokyo, Japan. This deciduous tree has distinctive fan-shaped, often bilobed leaves that turn a clear yellow in autumn. The female trees have unpleasantly scented dull yellow fruits which contain edible seeds. Trees grow in well-drained soil in full sun and are tolerant of atmospheric pollution.Ā

The Bottle Brush is just about to explode into flower āCallistemonā (possibly Callistemon citrinus - these were planted well before 1995 when I got here). They are mostly found in the more temperate regions of Australia, especially along the east coast and usually like moist conditions. I find they do well as an established tree with little water in this area. They can either be pruned to shape or left to grow really big. The small is at the start of the side driveway and the one at the back yard is now at least 10 metres tall by 12 metres wide. #bottlebrush #callistemon #callistemoncitrinus #streettree #tree #bush #hedge #abcmygarden #myplants #australiangarden #ausnative #ausraliannative #flower #red (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiuK_SVv-Kn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Bottle Brush āCallistemonā (possibly Callistemon citrinus - these were planted well before 1995 when I got here) is a genus of shrubs first described in 1814. They are mostly found in the more temperate regions of Australia, especially along the east coast and usually like moist conditions. I find they do well as an established tree with little water in this area. These are spot flowering in Belmont but were in full flower in Gunnedah. They can either be pruned to shape or left to grow really big. The one out the front needs to be cut back by half and the one at the back is now at least 10 metres tall by 12 metres wide. #bottlebrush #callistemon #callistemoncitrinus #streettree #tree #bush #hedge #australian #africanplant #mygarden #myplants #homegrown #australiangardensĀ #australiangarden #ausnative #ausnatives #flower #perennial #green #red #myrtaceae #seedcapsule (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeDfJ2svbjG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
