Some cooler weather and the Red Geranium - Pelargonium is looking pretty (Pelargonium) These are all ready to be cut back and propagated again soon. Pelargoniums are evergreen perennials from warm temperate and tropical regions of the world, many species in southern Africa. They flower for a long period and intensive breeding has produced a huge number of cultivars with great variety in size, flower colour, leaf form and aromatic foliage. Really happy with the Frangipanis this year, we still have some flowers (Plumeria rubra). They are lovely and green with almost no frangipani rust as yet. They come from Mexico, Central America, Colombia and Venezuela. Often by this time they are being attacked by Frangipani Rust (Coleosporium Pluymeriae) but this year we have been lucky, possibly because it’s been a little drier and cooler. Egyptian Starcluster has enjoyed growing in the shade but is now very tall (Pentas Lanceolata), native to much of Africa. It’s a perennial in my garden but colder areas it would be an annual. I just got a new colour and have struck the cutting in water 😁. Allamanda or bush allamanda (Allamanda schottii) is native to parts of Brazil. This one has been in the garden since at least 1995 and needs almost no care. I usually cut it back quite hard but have let it grow a bit this year. It’s still flowering into autumn and is looking very lush. Yellow Marguerite Daisy almost never stops flowering (Argyranthemum frutescens) It’s native to the Canary Islands. These are some cuttings and also some mature plants. Our big plant has been in full bloom continuously for a year and a half and is showing no signs of slowing down. It has set some seed which I might try to propagate. These daisies are extremely hardy and flower almost constantly in this area. Quite OK for pots and good for borders and cottage gardens. Autumn flowers on the Bottle Brush (Callistemon) very much appreciated by the Rainbow Lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus) Callistemon are mostly found in the more temperate regions of Australia, especially along the east coast and usually like moist conditions. I find they do well as an established tree with little water in this area. They can either be pruned to shape or left to grow really big. Bonsai Red Hibiscus in flower (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), or China rose, Hawaiian hibiscus, rose mallow and shoeblack. I’ve had this going for quite a few years now and still haven’t quite worked out what traditional bonsai shape to make it. It’s a cutting of a plant I liked. Trailing Abutilon or Chinese Lantern has been flowering continuously for the last year and a half at least (Abutilon megapotamicum or Callianthe megapotamica) native to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay a shrub that can grow to 2.5 metres tall. Mine does spread a fair bit but usually is less than two feet high. I pretty much haven’t watered it for the last year and it’s still green and colourful.
