“Pollarding” is a traditional tree/forest management technique where branches of a tree are removed a few meters above the ground, leaving only the main trunk and a few lower branches. The technique was widespread in areas where challenging topography and growth conditions made it difficult to obtain enough animal feed, like in Western Norway, which served as the basis for the case study in this video. The leaves and branches provided valuable additional fodder for the animals, as well as wood for tools, poles and firewood for the farm.

A skilfully pruned Vitex negundo var. heterophylla (cut-leaved chaste tree) which flowers late in the season and provides autumn colour. The tree can reach over 10m in height, but here it is treated as a pollarded tree. The previous year’s growth is cut back to the main stem, from which the next seasons growth will be produced.
Isn’t this very old, gnarly, pollarded, fruit tree, probably an apple tree, absolutely stunning? I love its mysterious fairytale look and the fact that it is so lushly underplanted with blue lupines, lavender/purple irises, and azure blue perennial cornflowers (centaurea montana). Who says that orchards can’t be hauntingly beautiful! On another note, thankfully, the cold snap that we are experiencing here in Austin has not been as cold or destructive as what we went through last year in February. One more night of frost is forecasted and then it is supposed to warm up. I can’t wait to be able to work in the garden, again. Until then I am passing the time this weekend by tidying up the house, cleaning, and purging things that we don’t need anymore. Not my favorite job but it needs to be done and I feel so much better for it. What are you doing when you are cooped up at home by the winter weather? Wishing all of you a lovely Sunday!
