Our inside hydroponic hoya has flowers that are covered with sweet nectar this week without the strong perfume. Australian Bluebell, Tall or Austral Bluebell (Wahlenbergia stricta ) this really tiny flower is a native Australian wildflower. Apparently it’s quite common but it’s so tiny you may well miss it . It’s found in all Australian states but not the Northern Territory. Often seen growing by the side of the road, enjoying the extra runoff. This one was a tiny plant growing in our lawn and I rescued it from the mower in January. It’s much bigger now and is trying to outgrow its pot. Hairpin Banksia (Banksia spinulosa), is native to the east coast of Australia, from Victoria up to Cairns and grows from the coastline into forest areas of the Great Dividing Range. In coastal areas of it is often dwarfed but in the mountains it is often taller and more upright. The "big bad" Banksia Men (modelled after the tree’s mature cones) are the villains of the story, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, by May Gibbs. At our dog show grounds it’s growing under many of the gum trees, usually on the shaded south side. I’ve got somell try taking a cuttings and also some seedpods to try and propagate. The seedpods open after a fire. I think it will make a good bonsai and also because Australian native birds love them. N.B. Scurvy Weed (Commelina cyanea) This beautiful little Australian native is growing all over my large compost heap and is fighting with the Wandering Trad (Tradescantia fluminensis) which is an invasive weed. It’s a local native with a range across eastern New South Wales, from Narooma northwards, up into Queensland. I’ve tried growing it in a trough but the Tradescantia also decided to grow in with it. Bacon and Eggs? Also bristly bush-pea, I think,(Pultenaea acerosa), it’s in the family Fabaceae that has some very beautiful members. In full flower today at Hillsborough Dog Show grounds. It comes from south-eastern continental Australia. This is one of a group of pea flowered plants that are out at the moment. I tend to call them all Bacon and Eggs. Grevillea ( Grevillea banksii ?), possibly Grevillea Robyn Gordon, along with a pale one that may be “Moonlight” have a long and plentiful flowering period. They are an Australian native and are widely cultivated and hybridised. Grevilleas make a good specimen bush or tree and are bird attracting. You can even lick the nectar off them yourself if the Rainbow Lorikeets or Honeyeaters don’t get there first. Heatherbrae Pies has a good selection that were fully in flower when we visited.
